²⁷ “The tenth day of this seventh month^(A) is the Day of Atonement.^(B) Hold a sacred assembly^(C) and deny yourselves,^[a] and present a food offering to the Lord.

²⁹ “This is to be a lasting ordinance^(A) for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month^(B) you must deny yourselves^[a](C) and not do any work^(D)—whether native-born^(E) or a foreigner residing among you— ³⁰ because on this day atonement will be made^(F) for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the Lord, you will be clean from all your sins.^{(G) 31} It is a day of sabbath rest, and you must deny yourselves;^(H) it is a lasting ordinance.^(I)

¹⁰ Once a year^(A) Aaron shall make atonement^(B) on its horns. This annual atonement must be made with the blood of the atoning sin offering^[a](C) for the generations to come.^(D) It is most holy to the Lord.”

The Day of Atonement^(A)

⁷ “‘On the tenth day of this seventh month hold a sacred assembly. You must deny yourselves^[a](B) and do no work.^{(C) 8} Present as an aroma pleasing to the Lord a burnt offering of one young bull, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect.^{(D) 9} With the bull offer a grain offering^(E) of three-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, two-tenths;^{(F) 10} and with each of the seven lambs, one-tenth.^{(G) 11} Include one male goat^(H) as a sin offering, in addition to the sin offering for atonement and the regular burnt offering^(I) with its grain offering, and their drink offerings.^(J)

²⁴ He shall bathe himself with water in the sanctuary area^(A) and put on his regular garments.^(B) Then he shall come out and sacrifice the burnt offering for himself and the burnt offering for the people,^(C) to make atonement for himself and for the people.^(D)

¹⁵ “He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people^(A) and take its blood behind the curtain^(B) and do with it as he did with the bull’s blood: He shall sprinkle^(C) it on the atonement cover and in front of it.

¹⁰ Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation^(A) and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. ¹¹ See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern,^(B) what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

³⁷ When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”^(A)

³⁸ Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized,^(B) every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.^(C) And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.^(D)

Mourning for the One They Pierced

¹⁰ “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit^[a](A) of grace and supplication.^(B) They will look on^[b] me, the one they have pierced,^(C) and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child,^(D) and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.^(E)
