Souviens-toi, Eternel !
5 Considère, Eternel, ╵tout ce qui nous est arrivé !
Regarde et vois ╵l’opprobre que nous subissons !
2 Notre patrimoine est passé ╵aux mains des étrangers,
et nos habitations à d’autres.
3 Nous sommes devenus ╵des orphelins de père,
nos mères sont comme des veuves.
4 Nous devons payer même ╵pour l’eau que nous buvons.
Nous rentrons notre bois ╵à prix d’argent.
5 Nous sommes pourchassés ╵par nos persécuteurs ╵qui sont sur notre dos,
nous sommes épuisés. ╵Pas de répit pour nous !
6 Nous tendons les mains vers l’Egypte,
vers l’Assyrie, ╵pour avoir à manger.
7 Or, nos ancêtres ont péché, ╵mais ils ont disparu,
et c’est nous qui portons ╵la peine de leurs fautes.
8 Nous sommes dominés ╵par des esclaves
et il n’y a personne ╵pour nous en délivrer.
9 Notre pain, nous le rapportons ╵en risquant notre vie,
en affrontant l’épée ╵des brigands du désert[a].
10 Notre peau est brûlante ╵comme si on l’avait ╵passée dans la fournaise,
tant la faim nous consume.
11 Ils ont déshonoré ╵des femmes dans Sion,
des jeunes filles dans les villes ╵du pays de Juda.
12 Ils ont pendu de leurs mains des ministres
et ils n’ont eu aucun égard ╵pour les responsables du peuple[b].
13 Des jeunes gens ╵portent la meule,
et des enfants trébuchent ╵sous les fardeaux de bois[c].
14 Les responsables ont cessé ╵de siéger à la porte[d]
et les adolescents ╵ont délaissé leurs chants.
15 La joie a disparu ╵de notre cœur,
le deuil a remplacé nos danses.
16 La couronne est tombée ╵de notre tête.
Malheur à nous, ╵car nous avons péché.
17 Oui, si notre cœur souffre,
si nos yeux sont plongés ╵dans les ténèbres,
18 c’est que le mont Sion ╵a été dévasté
et les renards y rôdent.
Fais-nous revenir à toi !
19 Toi, Eternel, ╵tu règnes pour toujours
et ton trône subsiste ╵à travers tous les âges.
20 Pourquoi nous oublierais-tu pour toujours ?
Pourquoi nous délaisserais-tu ╵aussi longtemps ?
21 Ah ! fais-nous revenir à toi, ╵ô Eternel !
Ainsi nous reviendrons à toi.
Renouvelle pour nous ╵les jours des anciens temps[e] !
22 Nous rejetterais-tu ╵définitivement ?
Serais-tu irrité ╵contre nous à l’excès[f] ?

A Prayer to the Lord
5 Remember, Lord, what happened to us.
Look and see our shame.
2 Our land has been turned over to strangers.
Our houses have been given to foreigners.
3 We have become orphans.
We have no father.
Our mothers have become like widows.
4 We have to buy the water that we drink.
We have to pay for the wood that we use.
5 We are forced to wear a yoke on our necks.
We get tired, and we have no rest.
6 We made an agreement with Egypt.
We also made an agreement with Assyria to get enough bread.
7 Our ancestors sinned against you, and now they are dead.
And we are suffering because of their sins.
8 Slaves have become our rulers.
No one can save us from them.
9 We risk our lives to get food.
There are men in the desert with swords.
10 Our skin is hot like an oven.
We have a high fever because of our hunger.
11 The enemy raped the women of Zion.
They raped the women in the cities of Judah.
12 The enemy hanged our princes.
They didn’t honor our elders.
13 The enemy made our young men grind grain at the mill.
Our young men stumbled under loads of wood.
14 The elders no longer sit at the gates of the city.
The young men no longer make music.
15 We have no more joy in our hearts.
Our dancing has changed to crying for the dead.
16 The crown has fallen from our head.
Things have gone bad for us because we sinned.
17 For this reason, our hearts have become sick,
and our eyes cannot see clearly.
18 Mount Zion is a wasteland.
Foxes run around on Mount Zion.
19 But you rule forever, Lord.
Your kingly chair lasts forever and ever.
20 You seem to have forgotten us forever.
You seem to have left us alone for such a long time.
21 Bring us back to you, Lord.
We will gladly come back to you.
Make our lives as they were before.
22 You were very angry with us.
Have you completely rejected us?

5 Remember, O Yahweh, what has happened to us;
Look, and see our (A)reproach!
2 Our inheritance has been turned over to (B)strangers,
Our (C)houses to foreigners.
3 We have become orphans (D)without a father;
Our mothers are like widows.
4 We drink our (E)water by means of silver;
Our wood comes to us at a price.
5 [a]Our pursuers are at our necks;
We are worn out; there is (F)no rest for us.
6 We have given over our [b]hands to (G)Egypt and Assyria [c]to get enough bread.
7 Our (H)fathers sinned; they are no more;
It is we who have borne their iniquities.
8 (I)Slaves rule over us;
There is (J)no one to tear us away from their hand.

[e]Because of the sword in the wilderness.

Because of [f]the burning heat of famine.

The virgins in the cities of Judah.
12 Princes were hung by their hands;

13 Young men (O)lifted up the stone at the grinding mill,
And youths (P)stumbled down under loads of wood.
14 Elders have ceased from being at the gate,
Young men from their (Q)music.
15 The joy of our hearts has (R)ceased;
Our dancing has been turned into mourning.
16 The (S)crown has fallen from our head;
(T)Woe to us, for we have sinned!
17 Because of this our (U)heart is faint;
Because of these things our (V)eyes are dim;
18 Because of (W)Mount Zion which lies desolate,
(X)Foxes walk about in it.
19 (Y)You, O Yahweh, sit enthroned forever;
Your (Z)throne is from generation to generation.
20 Why do You (AA)forget us forever?
Why do You forsake us [h]so long?
21 (AB)Cause us to return to You, O Yahweh, that we may be returned;
Renew (AC)our days as of old,
22 Even if (AD)You have utterly rejected us

13 Young men toil at the millstones;

14 The elders are gone from the city gate;

Woe to us, for we have sinned!(X)

renew our days as of old
