God’s anger toward Jerusalem

Oh, no!
In anger, my Lord put Daughter Zion under a cloud;[a]
he threw Israel’s glory from heaven down to earth.
On that day of wrath, he didn’t consider his own footstool.

Showing no compassion, my Lord devoured each of Jacob’s meadows;
in his wrath he tore down the walled cities of Daughter Judah.
The kingdom and its officials, he forced to the ground, shamed.

In his burning rage, he cut off each of Israel’s horns;
right in front of the enemy, he withdrew his strong hand;
he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire that ate up everything nearby.

He bent his bow as an enemy would; his strong hand was poised like an adversary.
He killed every precious thing in sight;
he poured out his wrath like fire on Daughter Zion’s tent.

My Lord has become like an enemy. He devoured Israel;
he devoured all her palaces; he made ruins of her city walls.
In Daughter Judah he multiplied mourning along with more mourning!

He wrecked his own booth like a garden; he destroyed his place for festivals.
The Lord made Zion forget both festival and sabbath;
in his fierce rage, he scorned both monarch and priest.

My Lord rejected his altar, he abandoned his sanctuary;
he handed Zion’s palace walls over to enemies.
They shouted in the Lord’s own house as if it were a festival day.

The Lord planned to destroy Daughter Zion’s wall.
He stretched out a measuring line, didn’t stop himself from devouring.
He made barricades and walls wither—together they wasted away.

Zion’s gates sank into the ground; he broke and shattered her bars;
her king and her officials are now among the nations. There is no Instruction![b]
Even her prophets couldn’t find a vision from the Lord.

10 Daughter Zion’s elders sit on the ground and mourn.
They throw dust on their heads; they put on mourning clothes.
Jerusalem’s young women bow their heads all the way to the ground.

11 My eyes are worn out from weeping; my stomach is churning.
My insides are poured on the ground because the daughter of my people is shattered,
because children and babies are fainting in the city streets.

12 They say to their mothers, “Where are grain and wine?”
while fainting like the wounded in the city streets,
while their lives are draining away at their own mothers’ breasts.

13 What can I testify about you, Daughter Jerusalem?[c] To what could I compare you?
With what could I equate you? How can I comfort you, young woman Daughter Zion?
Your hurt is as vast as the sea. Who can heal you?

14 Your prophets gave you worthless and empty visions.
They didn’t reveal your sin so as to prevent your captivity.
Instead, they showed you worthless and incorrect prophecies.

15 All who pass by on the road clap their hands about you;
they whistle, shaking their heads at Daughter Jerusalem:
“Could this be the city called Perfect Beauty, the Joy of All the Earth?”

16 All your enemies open wide their mouths against you;
they whistle, grinding their teeth. They say, “We have devoured!
This is definitely the day we’ve been waiting for. We’ve seen it come to pass.”

17 The Lord did what he had planned. He accomplished the word
that he had commanded long ago. He ripped down, showing no compassion.
He made the enemy rejoice over you; he raised up your adversaries’ horn.

18 Cry out to my Lord from the heart,[d] you wall of Daughter Zion;
make your[e] tears run down like a flood all day and night.
Don’t relax at all; don’t rest your eyes a moment.

19 Get up and cry out at nighttime, at the start of the night shift; pour out your heart before my Lord like water.
Lift your hands up to him for the life of your children—
the ones who are fainting from hunger on every street corner.

20 Lord, look and see to whom you have done this!
Should women eat their own offspring, their own beautiful babies?
Should priest and prophet be killed in my Lord’s own sanctuary?

21 Young and old alike lie on the ground in the streets;
my young women and young men fall dead by the sword.
On the day of your anger, you killed; you slaughtered, showing no compassion.

22 You invited—as if to a festival!—terrors[f] from every side.
On the day of the Lord’s anger, no one escaped, not one survived.
The children that I nurtured, that I raised myself, my enemy finished them off.

The Lord Has Destroyed Without Pity

How the Lord in his anger
    has set the daughter of Zion (A)under a cloud!
(B)He has cast down from heaven to earth
    the splendor of Israel;
he has not remembered (C)his footstool
    in the day of his anger.

The Lord (D)has swallowed up (E)without mercy
    all the habitations of Jacob;
in his wrath (F)he has broken down
    the strongholds of the daughter of Judah;
he has brought (G)down to the ground (H)in dishonor
    the kingdom (I)and its rulers.

He has cut down in (J)fierce anger
    all (K)the might of Israel;
(L)he has withdrawn from them his right hand
    in the face of the enemy;
(M)he has burned like a flaming fire in Jacob,
    consuming all around.

(N)He has bent his bow like an enemy,
    with his right hand set (O)like a foe;
and he has killed all who were delightful in our eyes;
    in the tent of the daughter of Zion,
he has poured out his fury like fire.

(P)The Lord has become like an enemy;
    (Q)he has swallowed up Israel;
(R)he has swallowed up all its palaces;
    he has laid in ruins its strongholds,
and he has multiplied in the daughter of Judah
    (S)mourning and lamentation.

He has laid waste his booth like a garden,
    laid in ruins (T)his meeting place;
(U)the Lord has made Zion forget
    festival and (V)Sabbath,
and in his fierce indignation has spurned king and priest.

(W)The Lord has scorned his altar,

(Y)he has delivered into the hand of the enemy
    the walls of her palaces;

(AA)The Lord determined to lay in ruins
    (AB)the wall of the daughter of Zion;
(AC)he stretched out the measuring line;

    (AE)they languished together.

Her gates have sunk into the ground;
    (AF)he has ruined (AG)and broken her bars;
(AH)her king and princes are among the nations;
    the law is no more,
and (AI)her prophets find
    no vision from the Lord.

10 The elders of the daughter of Zion
    (AJ)sit on the ground (AK)in silence;
(AL)they have thrown dust on their heads
    and (AM)put on sackcloth;
the young women of Jerusalem
    have bowed their heads to the ground.

11 (AN)My eyes are spent with weeping;
    (AO)my stomach churns;
(AP)my bile is poured out to the ground
    (AQ)because of the destruction of the daughter of my people,
(AR)because infants and babies (AS)faint
    in the streets of the city.

12 They cry to their mothers,
    (AT)“Where is bread and wine?”
(AU)as they faint like a wounded man
    in the streets of the city,
as their life is poured out
    on their mothers' bosom.

13 What can I say for you, (AV)to what compare you,
    O daughter of Jerusalem?
(AW)What can I liken to you, that I may comfort you,
    O virgin daughter of Zion?
(AX)For your ruin is vast as the sea;
    who can heal you?

14 (AY)Your prophets have seen for you
    false and deceptive visions;
(AZ)they have not exposed your iniquity
    to (BA)restore your fortunes,
(BB)but have seen for you (BC)oracles
    that are false and misleading.

15 All who pass along the way
    clap their hands at you;
(BD)they hiss and wag their heads
    at the daughter of Jerusalem:
“Is this the city that was called
    (BE)the perfection of beauty,
    (BF)the joy of all the earth?”

16 (BG)All your enemies
    rail against you;
they hiss, they gnash their teeth,
    they cry: “We (BH)have swallowed her!
Ah, this is the day we longed for;
    now we have it; (BI)we see it!”

17 The Lord has done what he purposed;
    he has carried out (BJ)his word,
which he commanded (BK)long ago;
    (BL)he has thrown down (BM)without pity;
(BN)he has made the enemy rejoice over you
    and exalted the (BO)might of your foes.

18 Their heart cried to the Lord.
    O (BP)wall of the daughter of Zion,
(BQ)let tears stream down like a torrent
    (BR)day and night!
(BS)Give yourself no rest,
    (BT)your eyes no respite!

19 “Arise, (BU)cry out in the night,
    at the beginning of the night watches!
(BV)Pour out your heart like water
    before the presence of the Lord!
(BW)Lift your hands to him
    for the lives of your children,
(BX)who faint for hunger
    at the head of every street.”

20 Look, O Lord, and see!
    (BY)With whom have you dealt thus?
(BZ)Should women eat the fruit of their womb,
    the children of (CA)their tender care?
Should (CB)priest and prophet be killed
    in the sanctuary of the Lord?

21 In the dust of the streets
    (CC)lie the young and the old;
(CD)my young women and my young men
    have fallen by the sword;
(CE)you have killed them in the day of your anger,
    slaughtering (CF)without pity.

22 You summoned as if to (CG)a festival day
    (CH)my terrors on every side,
(CI)and on the day of the anger of the Lord
    no one escaped or survived;
(CJ)those whom I held and raised
    my enemy destroyed.

Chapter 2

The Judgment of the Lord

Behold how the Lord in his anger
    has enveloped in darkness the daughter of Zion.
He has hurled down from heaven to earth
    the glory of Israel,
without any sign of regard for his footstool
    on the day of his anger.
Without mercy, the Lord has destroyed
    all the dwellings of Jacob.
In his wrath he has torn down
    the fortresses of the daughter of Judah.
He has thrown to the ground in dishonor
    the kingdom and its rulers.
In his fierce anger he broke off
    all the strength of Israel.
He withdrew the protection of his right hand
    at the approach of the enemy.
He blazed against Jacob like a flaming fire
    that consumes everything in its path.
Like an enemy he bent his bow,
    with his right hand prepared for action.
Like a foe he slew all those
    in whom he once took great pride.
He poured forth his fury like fire
    over the tent of the daughter of Zion.
The Lord has become an enemy;[a]
    he has annihilated Israel.
He has destroyed all its palaces
    and left all its strongholds in ruins.
For the daughter of Judah
    he has multiplied mourning and lamentation.
He has laid waste his dwelling like a garden
    and destroyed his tabernacle.
The Lord has erased in Zion
    every memory of festivals and Sabbaths.
In his fierce anger he has treated with contempt
    king and priest alike.
The Lord has rejected his altar
    and abandoned his sanctuary.
He has delivered the walls of her palaces
    into the power of the enemy
who raised a clamor in the house of the Lord
    as on a festival day.
The Lord was determined to destroy
    the walls of the daughter of Zion.
He marked off its boundaries with a measuring line
    and did not relent in his purpose.
He caused both wall and rampart to lament;
    together they crumbled to the ground.
The bars of her gates have been shattered,
    and the gates themselves have sunk into the ground.
Her king and her princes are in exile among the Gentiles;
    there is no instruction any longer from priests,
and her prophets have not received
    any vision from the Lord.[b]
10 The elders of the daughter of Zion
    sit on the ground in silence.
They have strewn dust on their heads
    and wrapped themselves in sackcloth.
The maidens of Jerusalem
    bow their heads to the ground.
11 My eyes are exhausted from weeping,
    and torment afflicts my innermost being.
My gall is poured out on the earth
    because of the destruction of my people,
as children and infants faint
    in the streets of the city.
12 They keep crying out to their mothers,
    “Where is there bread and something to drink?”
as they faint like the wounded
    in the streets of the city,
and breathe their last
    in their mothers’ arms.
13 To what can I liken you or compare you,
    O daughter of Jerusalem?
What can I do to rescue and comfort you,
    O virgin daughter of Zion?
Your ruin is as vast as the sea.
    Who can heal you?
14 The visions that your prophets revealed to you
    were false and worthless.
They did not lay bare your guilt
    so that you might reverse your fortunes.
The visions they proclaimed to you
    were erroneous and deceptive.[c]
15 All those who pass by
    clap their hands at you.
They hiss and wag their heads
    at the daughter of Jerusalem,
“Is this the city once described as perfect in beauty,
    the joy of the whole world?”
16 All your enemies do not hesitate
    to open their mouths against you.
They hiss and gnash their teeth;
    they cry out, “We have devoured her!
This is the day we longed for;
    at last we have seen it.”
17 The Lord has done what he planned;
    he has carried out his threat.
As he decreed from days of old,
    he has destroyed without pity.
He has permitted the enemy to rejoice over you
    and exalted the strength of your foes.
18 Cry out to the Lord,
    O wall of the daughter of Zion.
Let your tears flow like a torrent
    both day and night.
Allow yourself no respite;
    give your eyes no rest.
19 Arise and cry out during the night
    at the beginning of every watch.[d]
Pour out your heart like water
    in the presence of the Lord.
Lift up your hands to him
    for the lives of your children
who are fainting from hunger
    at the corner of every street.
20 Look, O Lord, and consider:
    whom have you ever treated in this fashion?
Should women eat their little ones,
    the children to whom they gave birth?
Should priest and prophet be killed
    in the sanctuary of the Lord?
21 The young and the old are lying dead
    on the ground in the streets.
My young women and my young men
    have fallen by the sword.
On the day of your anger you have slain them,
    slaughtering them without pity.
22 As if it were for a day of festival,
    you summoned my enemies from every side.
On the day of the Lord’s anger
    no one escaped and no one survived.
All those whom I bore and reared
    my enemy has completely annihilated.

Kanyang ibinagsak sa kaniyang poot ang mga katibayan ng anak na babae ng Juda;
Kaniyang inihiwalay sa pamamagitan ng mabangis na galit ang buong (F)sungay ng Israel;
Ang Panginoon ay naging parang kaaway, kaniyang nilamon ang Israel;
Kaniyang nilamon ang lahat niyang palacio, kaniyang iginiba ang kaniyang mga katibayan;
Iniwasak ng Panginoon ang kaniyang dambana, kaniyang kinayamutan ang kaniyang santuario;
Ipinasiya ng Panginoon na gibain ang kuta ng anak na babae ng Sion;
(P)Ang kaniyang hari at ang kaniyang mga prinsipe ay nangasa gitna ng mga bansa na (Q)hindi kinaroroonan ng kautusan;
10 Ang mga matanda ng anak na babae ng Sion ay nangauupo sa lupa, (S)sila'y nagsisitahimik;
14 Ang iyong mga propeta ay (X)nakakita para sa iyo ng mga pangitain na walang kabuluhan at kamangmangan;
15 Lahat na nangagdaraan ay (AB)ipinapakpak ang kanilang kamay sa iyo;
Sila'y nagsisisutsot at nagsisipagngalit ng ngipin; kanilang sinasabi, Aming nilamon siya;
17 Ginawa ng Panginoon ang (AF)kaniyang ipinasiya; kaniyang tinupad ang kaniyang salita na kaniyang iniutos (AG)nang mga kaarawan nang una;
(AI)Oh kuta ng anak na babae ng Sion, dumaloy ang mga luha na parang ilog araw at gabi;
19 Bumangon ka, humiyaw ka sa gabi, sa pasimula ng (AK)mga pagpupuyat;
21 Ang binata at ang matanda ay humihiga (AO)sa lupa sa mga lansangan;
22 Tinawag mo, gaya ng sa kaarawan ng takdang kapulungan, ang aking mga kakilabutan ay sa bawa't dako;
