1 [a]How deserted(A) lies the city,
once so full of people!(B)
How like a widow(C) is she,
who once was great(D) among the nations!
She who was queen among the provinces
has now become a slave.(E)
2 Bitterly she weeps(F) at night,
tears are on her cheeks.
Among all her lovers(G)
there is no one to comfort her.
All her friends have betrayed(H) her;
they have become her enemies.(I)
3 After affliction and harsh labor,
Judah has gone into exile.(J)
She dwells among the nations;
she finds no resting place.(K)
All who pursue her have overtaken her(L)
in the midst of her distress.
4 The roads to Zion mourn,(M)
for no one comes to her appointed festivals.
All her gateways are desolate,(N)
her priests groan,
her young women grieve,
and she is in bitter anguish.(O)
5 Her foes have become her masters;
her enemies are at ease.
The Lord has brought her grief(P)
because of her many sins.(Q)
Her children have gone into exile,(R)
captive before the foe.(S)
6 All the splendor has departed
from Daughter Zion.(T)
Her princes are like deer
that find no pasture;
in weakness they have fled(U)
before the pursuer.
7 In the days of her affliction and wandering
Jerusalem remembers all the treasures
that were hers in days of old.
When her people fell into enemy hands,
there was no one to help her.(V)
Her enemies looked at her
and laughed(W) at her destruction.
8 Jerusalem has sinned(X) greatly
and so has become unclean.(Y)
All who honored her despise her,
for they have all seen her naked;(Z)
she herself groans(AA)
and turns away.
9 Her filthiness clung to her skirts;
she did not consider her future.(AB)
Her fall(AC) was astounding;
there was none to comfort(AD) her.
“Look, Lord, on my affliction,(AE)
for the enemy has triumphed.”
10 The enemy laid hands
on all her treasures;(AF)
she saw pagan nations
enter her sanctuary(AG)—
those you had forbidden(AH)
to enter your assembly.
11 All her people groan(AI)
as they search for bread;(AJ)
they barter their treasures for food
to keep themselves alive.
“Look, Lord, and consider,
for I am despised.”
12 “Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?(AK)
Look around and see.
Is any suffering like my suffering(AL)
that was inflicted on me,
that the Lord brought on me
in the day of his fierce anger?(AM)
13 “From on high he sent fire,
sent it down into my bones.(AN)
He spread a net(AO) for my feet
and turned me back.
He made me desolate,(AP)
faint(AQ) all the day long.
14 “My sins have been bound into a yoke[b];(AR)
by his hands they were woven together.
They have been hung on my neck,
and the Lord has sapped my strength.
He has given me into the hands(AS)
of those I cannot withstand.
15 “The Lord has rejected
all the warriors in my midst;(AT)
he has summoned an army(AU) against me
to[c] crush my young men.(AV)
In his winepress(AW) the Lord has trampled(AX)
Virgin Daughter(AY) Judah.
16 “This is why I weep
and my eyes overflow with tears.(AZ)
No one is near to comfort(BA) me,
no one to restore my spirit.
My children are destitute
because the enemy has prevailed.”(BB)
17 Zion stretches out her hands,(BC)
but there is no one to comfort her.
The Lord has decreed for Jacob
that his neighbors become his foes;(BD)
Jerusalem has become
an unclean(BE) thing(BF) among them.
18 “The Lord is righteous,(BG)
yet I rebelled(BH) against his command.
Listen, all you peoples;
look on my suffering.(BI)
My young men and young women
have gone into exile.(BJ)
19 “I called to my allies(BK)
but they betrayed me.
My priests and my elders
perished(BL) in the city
while they searched for food
to keep themselves alive.
20 “See, Lord, how distressed(BM) I am!
I am in torment(BN) within,
and in my heart I am disturbed,(BO)
for I have been most rebellious.(BP)
Outside, the sword bereaves;
inside, there is only death.(BQ)

Jerusalem in Affliction
1 How lonely sits the city
That was full of people!
(A)How like a widow is she,
Who was great among the nations!
The (B)princess among the provinces

Her tears are on her cheeks;
Among all her lovers
She has none to comfort her.
All her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
They have become her enemies.
3 (E)Judah has gone into captivity,
Under affliction and hard servitude;
(F)She dwells among the [b]nations,
She finds no (G)rest;
All her persecutors overtake her in dire straits.
4 The roads to Zion mourn
Because no one comes to the [c]set feasts.
All her gates are (H)desolate;
Her priests sigh,
Her virgins are afflicted,
And she is in bitterness.
5 Her adversaries (I)have become [d]the master,
Her enemies prosper;
For the Lord has afflicted her
(J)Because of the multitude of her transgressions.
Her (K)children have gone into captivity before the enemy.
6 And from the daughter of Zion
All her splendor has departed.
Her princes have become like deer

7 In the days of her affliction and roaming,
Jerusalem (L)remembers all her pleasant things
That she had in the days of old.
When her people fell into the hand of the enemy,
With no one to help her,
The adversaries saw her
And mocked at her [f]downfall.
8 (M)Jerusalem has sinned gravely,
Therefore she has become [g]vile.
All who honored her despise her
Because (N)they have seen her nakedness;
Yes, she sighs and turns away.
9 Her uncleanness is in her skirts;
She (O)did not consider her destiny;
Therefore her collapse was awesome;
She had no comforter.
“O Lord, behold my affliction,
For the enemy is exalted!”
10 The adversary has spread his hand
Over all her [h]pleasant things;
For she has seen (P)the nations enter her [i]sanctuary,
Those whom You commanded
(Q)Not to enter Your assembly.
11 All her people sigh,
(R)They [j]seek bread;
They have given their [k]valuables for food to restore life.
“See, O Lord, and consider,
For I am scorned.”
12 “Is it nothing to you, all you who [l]pass by?
Behold and see
(S)If there is any sorrow like my sorrow,
Which has been brought on me,
Which the Lord has inflicted
In the day of His fierce anger.
13 “From above He has sent fire into my bones,
And it overpowered them;
He has (T)spread a net for my feet
And turned me back;
He has made me desolate
And faint all the day.
14 “The(U) yoke of my transgressions was [m]bound;
They were woven together by His hands,
And thrust upon my neck.
He made my strength fail;
The Lord delivered me into the hands of those whom I am not able to withstand.
15 “The Lord has trampled underfoot all my mighty men in my midst;
He has called an assembly against me
To crush my young men;
(V)The Lord trampled as in a winepress
The virgin daughter of Judah.
16 “For these things I weep;
My eye, (W)my eye overflows with water;
Because the comforter, who should restore my life,
Is far from me.
My children are desolate
Because the enemy prevailed.”
17 (X)Zion [n]spreads out her hands,
But no one comforts her;
The Lord has commanded concerning Jacob
That those (Y)around him become his adversaries;
Jerusalem has become an unclean thing among them.
18 “The Lord is (Z)righteous,
For I (AA)rebelled against His [o]commandment.
Hear now, all peoples,
And behold my sorrow;
My virgins and my young men
Have gone into captivity.
19 “I called for my lovers,
But they deceived me;
My priests and my elders
Breathed their last in the city,
While they sought food
To restore their life.
20 “See, O Lord, that I am in distress;
My (AB)soul[p] is troubled;
My heart is overturned within me,
For I have been very rebellious.
(AC)Outside the sword bereaves,
At home it is like death.
21 “They have heard that I sigh,
But no one comforts me.
All my enemies have heard of my trouble;
They are (AD)glad that You have done it.
Bring on (AE)the day You have [q]announced,
That they may become like me.
22 “Let(AF) all their wickedness come before You,
And do to them as You have done to me
For all my transgressions;
For my sighs are many,
And my heart is faint.”

Jerusalem Cries Over Her Destruction
1 Jerusalem once was a city full of people,
but now the city is so empty.
She[a] was one of the greatest cities in the world,
but now she is like a poor widow.
She was once a princess among cities,
but now she has been made a slave.
2 She cries bitterly in the night.
Her tears are on her cheeks.
She has no one to comfort her.
Many nations were friendly to her,
but not one of them comforts her now.
All her friends have turned their backs on her
and have become her enemies.
3 Judah suffered very much,
and then she was taken into captivity.
She lives among other nations
but has found no rest.
The people who chased her caught her
where there was no way out.[b]
4 The roads to Zion are very sad,
because no one comes to Zion for the festivals anymore.
All of Zion’s gates have been destroyed;
all her priests groan in sorrow.
Zion’s young women have been taken away,[c]
and all this made Zion sad.
5 Jerusalem’s enemies have won.
Her enemies have been successful.
This happened because the Lord punished her.
He punished Jerusalem for her many sins.
Her children have gone away.
Their enemies captured them and took them away.
6 The beauty of Daughter Zion[d] has gone away.
Her princes were like deer that cannot find a meadow to feed in.
They walk away without strength from those who chased them.
7 Jerusalem thinks back.
She remembers the time when she was hurt
and when she lost her home.
She remembers all the nice things that she had in the past.
She remembers those nice things that she had in the old days.
She remembers when her people were captured by the enemy.
She remembers when there was no one to help her.
When her enemies saw her, they laughed,
because she was destroyed.
8 Jerusalem sinned very badly.
Because Jerusalem sinned,
she became a ruined city that people shake their heads about.
In the past people respected her.
But now they hate her,
because they abused her.
Jerusalem groaned
and turned away.
9 Jerusalem’s skirts were dirty.
She gave no thought to what would become of her.
Her fall was amazing.
She had no one to comfort her.
She says, “Lord, see how I am hurt!
See how my enemy thinks he is so great!”
10 The enemy stretched out his hand.
He took all her nice things.
In fact, she saw the foreign nations go inside her Temple.
And you said those people could not join in our assembly!
11 All the people of Jerusalem are groaning.
All of her people are looking for food.
They are giving away all their nice things for food to stay alive.
Jerusalem says, “Look, Lord. Look at me!
See how people hate me.
12 All you who pass by on the road, you don’t seem to care.
But look at me and see.
Is there any pain like my pain?
Is there any pain like the pain that has come to me?
Is there any pain like the pain that the Lord has punished me with?
He has punished me on the day of his great anger.
13 The Lord sent fire from above
that went down into my bones.
He stretched out a net for my feet.
He turned me all the way around.
He made me into a wasteland.
I am sick all day.
14 “My sins were tied up like a yoke.
My sins were tied up in the Lord’s hands.
His yoke is on my neck.
He has made me weak.
He has given me to those
who I cannot stand up against.
15 “The Lord rejected all my powerful men
who were inside the city.
Then he brought a group of people against me.
He brought them to kill my young soldiers.
The Lord has trampled his dearest city[e]
like grapes in a winepress.
16 “I cry about all these things.
Tears are flowing down my cheeks.
There is no one near to comfort me.
There is no one who can make me feel better.
My children are like a wasteland,
because the enemy won.”
17 Zion spread out her hands.
There was no one to comfort her.
The Lord had given orders to Jacob’s enemies.
He ordered them to surround the city.
Jerusalem has become a dirty rag
that her enemies threw away.
18 Now Jerusalem says, “I refused to listen to the Lord,
so he is right for doing these things.
So listen, all you people!
Look at my pain!
My young women and men
have gone into captivity.
19 I called out to my lovers,
but they tricked me.
My priests and my elders
have died in the city.
They were looking for food for themselves.
They wanted to keep themselves alive.
20 “Look at me, Lord. I am in distress!
I am upset, as if my heart turned upside down inside of me.
I feel this way because
I have been so stubborn.
Out in the streets,
I lost my children to the swords.
Inside, it is like death.
21 “Listen to me, I am groaning.
I have no one to comfort me.
All my enemies have heard of my trouble.
They are happy that you did this to me.
You said there would be a time of punishment.
You said you would punish my enemies.
Now do what you said.
Let my enemies be like I am now.
22 “Look how evil my enemies are!
Then you can treat them the same way you treated me
because of all my sins.
Do this because I am groaning again and again.
Do this because my heart is sick.”

1 Comme[b] elle reste solitaire
la cité qui, naguère, ╵était si populeuse !
Elle est comme une veuve !
Elle qui était importante ╵au milieu des nations,
princesse des provinces,
elle est astreinte à la corvée !
2 Tout au long de la nuit, ╵elle pleure, et ses larmes ╵ruissellent sur ses joues.
De tous ceux qui l’aimaient,
aucun ne la console :
tous ses compagnons[c] l’ont trahie
et ils sont devenus ses ennemis.
3 Juda s’en est allé ╵dans un pays d’exil, ╵accablé de misère,
soumis à un dur esclavage.
Le voici qui habite ╵au sein de peuples étrangers
sans trouver la tranquillité.
Tous ceux qui le pourchassent ╵l’atteignent
au milieu des détresses.
4 Les chemins de Sion ╵sont plongés dans le deuil
parce qu’il ne vient plus personne ╵pour célébrer les fêtes.
Ses portes sont en pièces,
ses prêtres se lamentent,
ses jeunes filles ╵sont affligées,
la ville est remplie d’amertume.
5 Ses oppresseurs ╵font peser leur domination sur elle,
ses ennemis prospèrent,
car l’Eternel l’a affligée
pour ses nombreux péchés,
et ses petits enfants ╵sont partis en captivité
poussés par l’ennemi.
6 La communauté de Sion ╵a été dépouillée
de toute sa splendeur.
Ses ministres sont devenus ╵semblables à des cerfs
qui ne trouvent pas de pâture,
qui fuient à bout de forces
devant ceux qui les traquent.
7 Aux jours de son humiliation
et de sa vie errante,
Jérusalem ╵se souvient des trésors
qu’elle avait autrefois,
maintenant que son peuple ╵est, tout entier, tombé ╵aux mains de l’oppresseur
sans qu’il y ait personne ╵qui vienne à son secours.
Les ennemis la voient
et font des gorges chaudes ╵au sujet de sa destruction.
8 Voici Jérusalem ╵a gravement péché,
c’est pourquoi elle est devenue ╵comme un déchet[d].
Tous ceux qui l’honoraient, ╵maintenant la méprisent,
car ils ont vu sa nudité.
Elle-même en gémit ╵et se détourne.
9 Son impureté apparaît ╵sur les pans de sa robe.
Elle n’a pas songé ╵à ce qui s’ensuivrait.
Elle est tombée, ╵sa chute est étonnante
et nul ne la console.
« O Eternel, dit-elle, ╵vois mon humiliation,
car l’ennemi triomphe. »
10 L’ennemi a pillé
tous ses objets précieux,
elle a vu des gens d’autres peuples
pénétrer dans son sanctuaire.
Pourtant, tu avais dit :
« Ceux-là ne devront pas faire partie ╵de ta communauté. »
11 Tout son peuple gémit
en recherchant du pain.
Il donne ses trésors ╵contre des aliments
pour reprendre des forces.
« Vois, Eternel, dit-elle, ╵et considère
l’abjection où je suis. »
Les plaintes de Jérusalem
12 N’êtes-vous pas touchés,
ô vous tous qui passez par là ?
Regardez et voyez
s’il est une douleur ╵comparable à la mienne
qui me fait tant souffrir.
L’Eternel me l’a infligée
au jour de sa colère ardente.
13 D’en haut, il a lancé un feu
qui m’a pénétré jusqu’aux os,
il a tendu ╵un filet sous mes pieds :
il m’a fait reculer
et il a fait de moi ╵une désolation,
dans la souffrance tout le jour.
14 Il a lié le joug ╵que composent mes transgressions[e],
sa main les a nouées ensemble,
et elles pèsent sur mon cou.
Il a sapé ma force.
Le Seigneur m’a livrée ╵au pouvoir d’hommes
auxquels je ne peux résister.
15 Oui, le Seigneur a repoussé[f] ╵tous les puissants guerriers
qui étaient dans mes murs,
et il a fixé contre moi ╵un rendez-vous[g]
dans le but de briser ╵mes jeunes gens.
Le Seigneur a foulé ╵comme dans un pressoir
la population de Juda.
16 Je pleure donc sur eux ;
j’éclate en longs sanglots,
car le consolateur ╵qui ranimerait mon courage
est loin de moi.
Mes fils sont tous plongés ╵dans la désolation,
car l’ennemi ╵a été le plus fort.
17 Sion étend les mains,
mais nul ne la console.
L’Eternel a donné des ordres,
aux adversaires de Jacob, ╵pour qu’ils l’encerclent.
Jérusalem est devenue
un déchet à leurs yeux.
18 Mais l’Eternel est juste,
car j’ai été rebelle ╵à ses commandements.
Ecoutez, je vous prie, ╵vous, tous les peuples,
et voyez ma douleur :
mes jeunes filles, ╵mes jeunes gens
sont partis en captivité.
19 J’ai fait appel à mes amants,
mais eux ils m’ont trahie.
Mes prêtres et mes dirigeants
ont péri dans la ville
en cherchant de la nourriture
pour reprendre des forces.
20 Regarde, ô Eternel, ╵comme je suis dans la détresse ;
tout mon être intérieur ╵est en bouillonnement.
Mon cœur chavire en moi
parce que je me suis ╵gravement révoltée.
Tandis qu’à l’extérieur ╵l’épée me prive ╵de mes enfants,
à l’intérieur ╵c’est comme chez la mort.
21 On entend mes gémissements,
mais nul ne me console
et tous mes ennemis, ╵apprenant mon malheur,
sont dans la joie, ╵car c’est toi qui as fait cela.
Fais donc venir[h] le jour ╵que tu as annoncé,
et que mes ennemis ╵deviennent comme moi !
22 Oh oui, tiens compte ╵de leur méchanceté,
et traite-les
comme tu m’as traitée
pour punir mes forfaits,
car il n’y a de cesse ╵à mes gémissements,
mon cœur est affligé.
