3 Yo soy el que ha experimentado el sufrimiento
bajo los golpes de la furia del Señor.
2 Me ha llevado a regiones oscuras,
me ha hecho andar por caminos sin luz;
3 una y otra vez, a todas horas,
descarga su mano sobre mí.
4 Ha hecho envejecer mi carne y mi piel,
ha hecho pedazos mis huesos;
5 ha levantado a mi alrededor
un cerco de amargura y sufrimientos;
6 me ha hecho vivir en las sombras,
como los que murieron hace tiempo.
7 Me encerró en un cerco sin salida;
me oprimió con pesadas cadenas;
8 aunque grité pidiendo ayuda,
no hizo caso de mis ruegos;
9 me cerró el paso con muros de piedra,
¡cambió el curso de mis senderos!
10 Él ha sido para mí como un león escondido,
como un oso a punto de atacarme.
11 Me ha desviado del camino, me ha desgarrado,
¡me ha dejado lleno de terror!
12 ¡Tensó el arco y me puso
como blanco de sus flechas!
13 Las flechas lanzadas por el Señor
se me han clavado muy hondo.
14 Toda mi gente se burla de mí;
a todas horas soy el tema de sus burlas.
15 El Señor me ha llenado de amarguras;
amarga es la bebida que me ha dado.
16 Me estrelló los dientes contra el suelo;
me hizo morder el polvo.
17 De mí se ha alejado la paz
y he olvidado ya lo que es la dicha.
18 Hasta he llegado a pensar que ha muerto
mi firme esperanza en el Señor.
19 Recuerdo mi tristeza y soledad,
mi amargura y sufrimiento;
20 me pongo a pensar en ello
y el ánimo se me viene abajo.
21 Pero una cosa quiero tener presente
y poner en ella mi esperanza:
22 El amor del Señor no tiene fin,
ni se han agotado sus bondades.
23 Cada mañana se renuevan;
¡qué grande es su fidelidad!
24 Y me digo: ¡El Señor lo es todo para mí;
por eso en él confío!
25 El Señor es bueno con los que en él confían,
con los que a él recurren.
26 Es mejor esperar en silencio
a que el Señor nos ayude.
27 Es mejor que el hombre se someta
desde su juventud.
28 El hombre debe quedarse solo y callado
cuando el Señor se lo impone;
29 debe, humillado, besar el suelo,
pues tal vez aún haya esperanza;
30 debe ofrecer la mejilla a quien le hiera,
y recibir el máximo de ofensas.
31 El Señor no ha de abandonarnos
para siempre.
32 Aunque hace sufrir, también se compadece,
porque su amor es inmenso.
33 Realmente no le agrada afligir
ni causar dolor a los hombres.
34 El pisotear sin compasión
a los prisioneros del país,
35 el violar los derechos de un hombre
en la propia cara del Altísimo,
36 el torcer la justicia de un proceso,
son cosas que el Señor condena.
37 Cuando algo se dice, cuando algo pasa,
es porque el Señor lo ha ordenado.
38 Tanto los bienes como los males
vienen porque el Altísimo así lo dispone.
39 Siendo el hombre un pecador,
¿de qué se queja en esta vida?
40 Reflexionemos seriamente en nuestra conducta,
y volvamos nuevamente al Señor.
41 Elevemos al Dios del cielo
nuestros pensamientos y oraciones.
42 Nosotros pecamos y fuimos rebeldes,
y tú no perdonaste.
43 Nos rodeaste con tu furia, nos perseguiste,
¡nos quitaste la vida sin miramientos!
44 Te envolviste en una nube
para no escuchar nuestros ruegos.
45 Nos has tratado como a vil basura
delante de toda la gente.
46 Todos nuestros enemigos
abren la boca en contra de nosotros;
47 temores, trampas, destrucción y ruina,
¡eso es lo que nos ha tocado!
48 Ríos de lágrimas brotan de mis ojos
ante la destrucción de mi amada ciudad.
49 Lloran mis ojos sin descanso,
pues no habrá alivio
50 hasta que el Señor del cielo
nos mire desde lo alto.
51 Me duelen los ojos hasta el alma,
por lo ocurrido a las hijas de mi ciudad.
52 Sin tener ningún motivo,
mis enemigos me han cazado como a un ave;
53 me enterraron vivo en un pozo,
y con una piedra taparon la salida.
54 El agua me ha cubierto por completo,
y he pensado: «Estoy perdido.»
55 Yo, Señor, invoco tu nombre
desde lo más profundo del pozo:
56 tú escuchas mi voz,
y no dejas de atender a mis ruegos.
57 El día que te llamo, vienes a mí,
y me dices: «No tengas miedo.»
58 Tú me defiendes, Señor, en mi lucha,
tú rescatas mi vida.
59 Tú ves, Señor, las injusticias que sufro,
¡hazme justicia!
60 Tú ves sus deseos de venganza
y todos los planes que hacen contra mí.
61 Escucha, Señor, sus ofensas
y todos los planes que hacen contra mí;
62 las habladurías de mis enemigos,
que a todas horas hablan en contra mía.
63 ¡Mira cómo en todas sus acciones
soy objeto de sus burlas!
64 Dales, Señor, su merecido,
dales lo que sus hechos merecen.
65 Enduréceles el entendimiento,
y pon sobre ellos tu maldición.
66 Persíguelos con furia, Señor,
¡haz que desaparezcan de este mundo!

3 [a]I am the man who has seen affliction(A)
by the rod of the Lord’s wrath.(B)
2 He has driven me away and made me walk
in darkness(C) rather than light;
3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me(D)
again and again, all day long.
4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old(E)
and has broken my bones.(F)
5 He has besieged me and surrounded me
with bitterness(G) and hardship.(H)
6 He has made me dwell in darkness
like those long dead.(I)
7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape;(J)
he has weighed me down with chains.(K)
8 Even when I call out or cry for help,(L)
he shuts out my prayer.(M)
9 He has barred(N) my way with blocks of stone;
he has made my paths crooked.(O)
10 Like a bear lying in wait,
like a lion(P) in hiding,(Q)
11 he dragged me from the path and mangled(R) me
and left me without help.
12 He drew his bow(S)
and made me the target(T) for his arrows.(U)
13 He pierced(V) my heart
with arrows from his quiver.(W)
14 I became the laughingstock(X) of all my people;(Y)
they mock me in song(Z) all day long.
15 He has filled me with bitter herbs
and given me gall to drink.(AA)
16 He has broken my teeth with gravel;(AB)
he has trampled me in the dust.(AC)
17 I have been deprived of peace;
I have forgotten what prosperity is.
18 So I say, “My splendor is gone
and all that I had hoped from the Lord.”(AD)
19 I remember my affliction and my wandering,
the bitterness(AE) and the gall.(AF)
20 I well remember them,
and my soul is downcast(AG) within me.(AH)
21 Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:
22 Because of the Lord’s great love(AI) we are not consumed,(AJ)
for his compassions never fail.(AK)
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.(AL)
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;(AM)
therefore I will wait for him.”
25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;(AN)
26 it is good to wait quietly(AO)
for the salvation of the Lord.(AP)
27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke
while he is young.
28 Let him sit alone in silence,(AQ)
for the Lord has laid it on him.
29 Let him bury his face in the dust(AR)—
there may yet be hope.(AS)
30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him,(AT)
and let him be filled with disgrace.(AU)
31 For no one is cast off
by the Lord forever.(AV)
32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion,
so great is his unfailing love.(AW)
33 For he does not willingly bring affliction
or grief to anyone.(AX)
34 To crush underfoot
all prisoners in the land,
35 to deny people their rights
before the Most High,(AY)
36 to deprive them of justice—
would not the Lord see such things?(AZ)
37 Who can speak and have it happen
if the Lord has not decreed it?(BA)
38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
that both calamities and good things come?(BB)
39 Why should the living complain
when punished for their sins?(BC)
40 Let us examine our ways and test them,(BD)
and let us return to the Lord.(BE)
41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands
to God in heaven,(BF) and say:
42 “We have sinned and rebelled(BG)
and you have not forgiven.(BH)
43 “You have covered yourself with anger and pursued(BI) us;
you have slain without pity.(BJ)
44 You have covered yourself with a cloud(BK)
so that no prayer(BL) can get through.(BM)
45 You have made us scum(BN) and refuse
among the nations.
46 “All our enemies have opened their mouths
wide(BO) against us.(BP)
47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls,(BQ)
ruin and destruction.(BR)”
48 Streams of tears(BS) flow from my eyes(BT)
because my people are destroyed.(BU)
49 My eyes will flow unceasingly,
without relief,(BV)
50 until the Lord looks down
from heaven and sees.(BW)
51 What I see brings grief to my soul
because of all the women of my city.
52 Those who were my enemies without cause
hunted me like a bird.(BX)
53 They tried to end my life in a pit(BY)
and threw stones at me;
54 the waters closed over my head,(BZ)
and I thought I was about to perish.(CA)
55 I called on your name, Lord,
from the depths(CB) of the pit.(CC)
56 You heard my plea:(CD) “Do not close your ears
to my cry for relief.”
57 You came near(CE) when I called you,
and you said, “Do not fear.”(CF)
58 You, Lord, took up my case;(CG)
you redeemed my life.(CH)
59 Lord, you have seen the wrong done to me.(CI)
Uphold my cause!(CJ)
60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance,
all their plots against me.(CK)

3 I Am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.
2 He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.
3 Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.
4 My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.
5 He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.
6 He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.
7 He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.
8 Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.
9 He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.
10 He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.
11 He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate.
12 He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
13 He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.
14 I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.
15 He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath made me drunken with wormwood.
16 He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.
17 And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace: I forgat prosperity.
18 And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the Lord:
19 Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.
20 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.
21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
22 It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
24 The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
25 The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.
27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
28 He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him.
29 He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope.
30 He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach.
31 For the Lord will not cast off for ever:
32 But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.
33 For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.
34 To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth.
35 To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High,
36 To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.
37 Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?
38 Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?
39 Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
40 Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.
41 Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.
42 We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned.
43 Thou hast covered with anger, and persecuted us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied.
44 Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.
45 Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people.
46 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.
47 Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction.
48 Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
49 Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission.
50 Till the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.
51 Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.
52 Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause.
53 They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me.
54 Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.
55 I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon.
56 Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.
57 Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.
58 O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.
59 O Lord, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause.
60 Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me.
61 Thou hast heard their reproach, O Lord, and all their imaginations against me;
62 The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.

Hopp mitt under svårigheter
3 Jag har verkligen sett den plåga som är resultatet av Guds vrede.
2 Han har lett mig in i det djupaste mörker och utestängt allt ljus.
3 Han har vänt sig mot mig. Dag och natt straffar han mig
4 och får mig att åldras. Han har krossat benen i mig.
5 Han har byggt upp befästningar mot mig och omslutit mig med bitterhet och elände.
6 Han har begravt mig i mörker, och det är som om jag har varit död länge.
7 Han har stängt in mig, så att jag inte kan fly. Han har bundit fast mig med tunga kedjor,
8 och fastän jag ropar och ber, hör han mig inte!
9 Han har murat in mig bakom tunga stenblock och lagt hinder i min väg.
10 Han lurar som björn och lejon och väntar på att få anfalla mig.
11 Han har dragit ner mig från vägen, gett sig på mig och sedan lämnat mig liggande i mitt blod.
12 Han har spänt sin båge och riktat den mot mig.
13 Hans pilar har träffat mig djupt i hjärtat.
14 Mitt eget folk skrattar åt mig och sjunger sina nidvisor dagen lång.
15 Han har fyllt mig med bitterhet och gett mig en bägare av sorg att dricka.
16 Det gnisslar mellan tänderna av grus, och han har rullat mig i aska och smuts.
17 Herre, all frid och välsignelse är borta sedan länge, och det är du som har tagit bort alltsammans! Jag vet inte längre vad lycka är.
18 Allt hopp är ute. Min styrka är borta, för Herren har lämnat mig.
19 Kom ihåg den bitterhet och det lidande du har låtit mig möta!
20 Jag kommer aldrig att kunna glömma dessa fruktansvärda år. Alltid kommer jag att få leva i skam.
21 Ändå finns det en strimma av hopp.
22 Hans medlidande tar aldrig slut. Det är bara Herrens nåd som har bevarat oss från att helt gå under.
23 Stor är din trofasthet, Herre! Din barmhärtighet är ny varje morgon.
24 Jag påminner mig om att Herren är mitt arv. Därför vill jag hoppas på honom.
25 Herren är underbart god mot dem som väntar på honom, mot dem som söker honom.
26 Det känns gott att kunna hoppas på framtiden och att i stillhet och med tålamod vänta på räddningen från Herren.
27 Det är nyttigt för en ung man att lära sig disciplin.
28 Låt honom vänta i stillhet och med tålamod på Herrens befallningar.
29 Låt honom vänta i ödmjukhet med ansiktet mot marken.
30 Låt honom vända andra kinden till mot dem som slår honom och lära sig att uthärda grova förolämpningar utan att klaga.
31 Herren ska inte överge honom för evigt.
32 Även om Gud låter honom uppleva sorg, ska han visa medlidande med honom på grund av sin stora barmhärtighet,
33 för han vill inte göra det svårt för människor och orsaka dem sorg.
34-36 Men du har trampat och krossat de svaga i världen under dina fötter. Du har berövat människor de rättigheter Gud har gett dem, och du har vägrat dem rättvisa! Inte underligt att Herren måste ta itu med dig!
37 För vem kan göra något mot dig utan Herrens tillåtelse?
38 Det är ju Herren som både hjälper och straffar.
39 Varför ska då någon av oss klaga när vi straffas för våra synder?
40 Låt oss pröva oss själva i stället, och omvända oss till Herren!
41 Låt oss lyfta upp våra hjärtan och händer till honom i himlen,
42 för vi har syndat! Vi har gjort uppror mot Herren, och han har inte glömt det.
43 Du har låtit oss drabbas av din vrede, Herre, och slagit oss utan förbarmande.
44 Du har höljt dig i ett moln, så att våra böner inte kan tränga fram till dig.
45 Du har låtit oss bli som avskräde bland folken.
46 Alla våra fiender låter oss veta vad de tycker om oss.
47 Vi är skräckslagna, instängda, övergivna och besegrade!
48-49 Dag och natt strömmar floder av tårar från mina ögon när jag ser mitt folks undergång.
50 Om Herren ändå ville se ner från himlen och lyssna till mitt rop!
51 Mitt hjärta brister vid tanken på de unga flickorna i Jerusalem.
52 Mina fiender, som jag aldrig har gjort något ont, förföljde mig som om jag var en fågel.
53 De kastade ner mig i en brunn och täckte över den med stenar.
54 Vattnet strömmade över mitt huvud. Jag trodde att det var slutet för mig!
55 Men nerifrån djupet, där jag var, ropade jag ditt namn, Herre,
56 och du hörde mig! Du lyssnade till min vädjan och hörde min gråt!
57 Du är nära mig när jag ropar till dig, och du har sagt att jag inte ska vara rädd!
58 Herre, du är min försvarare! Du har tagit dig an mitt fall. Rädda mitt liv!
59 Du har sett hur illa de har handlat mot mig. Var nu min domare och bevisa att jag är oskyldig!
60 Du har sett alla sammansvärjningar mot mig.
61 Du har hört alla förolämpningar
62 och allt som de viskar om mig.
63 Se hur de skrattar och sjunger nidvisor om mig medan de förbereder min dom!
64 Herre, ge igen för allt ont de har gjort!
65 Förhärda deras hjärtan och förbanna dem, Herre!
66 Förfölj dem i din vrede och utplåna dem från jorden, så att de inte längre finns under din himmel!
