Dolori e conforti
3 (A)Io sono l’uomo che ha visto l’afflizione sotto la verga del suo furore.
2 Egli mi ha condotto, mi ha fatto camminare nelle tenebre e non nella luce.
3 Sì, contro di me di nuovo volge la sua mano tutto il giorno.
4 Egli ha consumato la mia carne e la mia pelle, ha spezzato le mie ossa.
5 Ha costruito contro di me e mi ha circondato di veleno e di affanno.
6 Mi ha fatto abitare in luoghi tenebrosi, come quelli che sono morti da lungo tempo.
7 Mi ha circondato di un muro, perché non esca; mi ha caricato di pesanti catene.
8 Anche quando grido e chiamo aiuto, egli chiude l’accesso alla mia preghiera.
9 Egli mi ha sbarrato la via con blocchi di pietra, ha sconvolto i miei sentieri.
10 È stato per me come un orso in agguato, come un leone in luoghi nascosti.
11 Mi ha sviato dal mio cammino e mi ha squarciato, mi ha reso desolato.
12 Ha teso il suo arco, mi ha posto come bersaglio delle sue frecce.
13 Mi ha fatto penetrare nelle reni le frecce della sua faretra.
14 Io sono diventato lo scherno di tutto il mio popolo, la sua canzone di tutto il giorno.
15 Egli mi ha saziato d’amarezza, mi ha abbeverato d’assenzio.
16 Mi ha spezzato i denti con la ghiaia, mi ha affondato nella cenere.
17 Tu mi hai allontanato dalla pace, io ho dimenticato il benessere.
18 Io ho detto: «È sparita la mia fiducia, non ho più speranza nel Signore!»
19 (B)Ricòrdati della mia afflizione, della mia vita raminga, dell’assenzio e del veleno!
20 Io me ne ricordo sempre, e ne sono intimamente prostrato.
21 Ecco ciò che voglio richiamare alla mente, ciò che mi fa sperare:
22 è una grazia del Signore che non siamo stati completamente distrutti; le sue compassioni infatti non sono esaurite,
23 si rinnovano ogni mattina. Grande è la tua fedeltà!
24 «Il Signore è la mia parte», io dico, «perciò spererò in lui».
25 Il Signore è buono con quelli che sperano in lui, con chi lo cerca.
26 È bene aspettare in silenzio la salvezza del Signore.
27 È bene per l’uomo portare il giogo della sua giovinezza.
28 Si sieda solitario e stia in silenzio quando il Signore glielo impone!
29 Metta la sua bocca nella polvere! Forse c’è ancora speranza.
30 Porga la guancia a chi lo percuote, si sazi pure di offese!
31 Il Signore infatti non respinge per sempre,
32 ma se affligge, ha pure compassione, secondo la sua immensa bontà;
33 poiché non è volentieri che egli umilia e affligge i figli dell’uomo.
34 Quando uno schiaccia sotto i piedi tutti i prigionieri della terra,
35 quando uno vìola i diritti di un uomo in presenza dell’Altissimo,
36 quando si fa torto a qualcuno nella sua causa, il Signore non lo vede forse?
37 Chi mai dice una cosa che si avveri, se il Signore non l’ha comandato?
38 Il male e il bene non procedono forse dalla bocca dell’Altissimo?
39 Perché si rammarica la creatura vivente? L’uomo vive malgrado i suoi peccati!
40 (C)Esaminiamo la nostra condotta, valutiamola, e torniamo al Signore!
41 Eleviamo le mani e i nostri cuori a Dio nei cieli!
42 «Noi abbiamo peccato, siamo stati ribelli, e tu non hai perdonato.
43 Ti sei avvolto nella tua ira e ci hai inseguiti; tu hai ucciso senza pietà.
44 Ti sei avvolto in una nuvola, perché la preghiera non potesse raggiungerti;
45 tu hai fatto di noi delle spazzature, dei rifiuti, in mezzo ai popoli.
46 Tutti i nostri nemici aprono larga la bocca contro di noi.
47 Ci sono toccati il terrore, la fossa, la desolazione e la rovina».
48 I miei occhi si sciolgono in fiumi di lacrime per la rovina della figlia del mio popolo.
49 (D)L’occhio mio piange senza posa, senza alcun riposo,
50 finché dal cielo il Signore non guardi e non veda il nostro stato.
51 L’occhio mio mi tormenta per tutte le figlie della mia città.
52 Quelli che mi sono nemici senza motivo mi hanno dato la caccia come a un uccello.
53 Hanno voluto annientare la mia vita nella fossa, mi hanno gettato pietre addosso.
54 Le acque salivano fin sopra il mio capo; io dicevo: «È finita per me!»
55 Io ho invocato il tuo nome, o Signore, dal fondo della fossa.
56 Tu hai udito la mia voce; non chiudere l’orecchio al mio sospiro, al mio grido!
57 Nel giorno che io ti ho invocato ti sei avvicinato; tu hai detto: «Non temere!»
58 O Signore, tu hai difeso la mia causa, tu hai redento la mia vita.
59 O Signore, tu vedi il torto che mi è fatto, giudica tu la mia causa!
60 Tu vedi tutto il loro rancore, tutte le loro macchinazioni contro di me.
61 Tu odi i loro insulti, Signore, tutte le loro macchinazioni contro di me,
62 il linguaggio dei miei avversari e ciò che meditano contro di me tutto il giorno!
63 Guarda! Quando si siedono, quando si alzano, io sono la loro canzone.
64 Tu li retribuirai, Signore, secondo l’opera delle loro mani.
65 Darai loro indurimento di cuore, la tua maledizione.
66 Li inseguirai nella tua ira e li sterminerai sotto i cieli del Signore.

3 [a]I am the man who has seen affliction(A)
by the rod of the Lord’s wrath.(B)
2 He has driven me away and made me walk
in darkness(C) rather than light;
3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me(D)
again and again, all day long.
4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old(E)
and has broken my bones.(F)
5 He has besieged me and surrounded me
with bitterness(G) and hardship.(H)
6 He has made me dwell in darkness
like those long dead.(I)
7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape;(J)
he has weighed me down with chains.(K)
8 Even when I call out or cry for help,(L)
he shuts out my prayer.(M)
9 He has barred(N) my way with blocks of stone;
he has made my paths crooked.(O)
10 Like a bear lying in wait,
like a lion(P) in hiding,(Q)
11 he dragged me from the path and mangled(R) me
and left me without help.
12 He drew his bow(S)
and made me the target(T) for his arrows.(U)
13 He pierced(V) my heart
with arrows from his quiver.(W)
14 I became the laughingstock(X) of all my people;(Y)
they mock me in song(Z) all day long.
15 He has filled me with bitter herbs
and given me gall to drink.(AA)
16 He has broken my teeth with gravel;(AB)
he has trampled me in the dust.(AC)
17 I have been deprived of peace;
I have forgotten what prosperity is.
18 So I say, “My splendor is gone
and all that I had hoped from the Lord.”(AD)
19 I remember my affliction and my wandering,
the bitterness(AE) and the gall.(AF)
20 I well remember them,
and my soul is downcast(AG) within me.(AH)
21 Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:
22 Because of the Lord’s great love(AI) we are not consumed,(AJ)
for his compassions never fail.(AK)
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.(AL)
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;(AM)
therefore I will wait for him.”
25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;(AN)
26 it is good to wait quietly(AO)
for the salvation of the Lord.(AP)
27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke
while he is young.
28 Let him sit alone in silence,(AQ)
for the Lord has laid it on him.
29 Let him bury his face in the dust(AR)—
there may yet be hope.(AS)
30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him,(AT)
and let him be filled with disgrace.(AU)
31 For no one is cast off
by the Lord forever.(AV)
32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion,
so great is his unfailing love.(AW)
33 For he does not willingly bring affliction
or grief to anyone.(AX)
34 To crush underfoot
all prisoners in the land,
35 to deny people their rights
before the Most High,(AY)
36 to deprive them of justice—
would not the Lord see such things?(AZ)
37 Who can speak and have it happen
if the Lord has not decreed it?(BA)
38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
that both calamities and good things come?(BB)
39 Why should the living complain
when punished for their sins?(BC)
40 Let us examine our ways and test them,(BD)
and let us return to the Lord.(BE)
41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands
to God in heaven,(BF) and say:
42 “We have sinned and rebelled(BG)
and you have not forgiven.(BH)
43 “You have covered yourself with anger and pursued(BI) us;
you have slain without pity.(BJ)
44 You have covered yourself with a cloud(BK)
so that no prayer(BL) can get through.(BM)
45 You have made us scum(BN) and refuse
among the nations.
46 “All our enemies have opened their mouths
wide(BO) against us.(BP)
47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls,(BQ)
ruin and destruction.(BR)”
48 Streams of tears(BS) flow from my eyes(BT)
because my people are destroyed.(BU)
49 My eyes will flow unceasingly,
without relief,(BV)
50 until the Lord looks down
from heaven and sees.(BW)
51 What I see brings grief to my soul
because of all the women of my city.
52 Those who were my enemies without cause
hunted me like a bird.(BX)
53 They tried to end my life in a pit(BY)
and threw stones at me;
54 the waters closed over my head,(BZ)
and I thought I was about to perish.(CA)
55 I called on your name, Lord,
from the depths(CB) of the pit.(CC)
56 You heard my plea:(CD) “Do not close your ears
to my cry for relief.”
57 You came near(CE) when I called you,
and you said, “Do not fear.”(CF)
58 You, Lord, took up my case;(CG)
you redeemed my life.(CH)
59 Lord, you have seen the wrong done to me.(CI)
Uphold my cause!(CJ)
60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance,
all their plots against me.(CK)
