3 I am the man who has seen affliction
by the rod of his wrath.
2 He has led me and caused me to walk in darkness,
and not in light.
3 Surely he turns his hand against me
again and again all day long.
4 He has made my flesh and my skin old.
He has broken my bones.
5 He has built against me,
and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.
6 He has made me dwell in dark places,
as those who have been long dead.
7 He has walled me about, so that I can’t go out.
He has made my chain heavy.
8 Yes, when I cry, and call for help,
he shuts out my prayer.
9 He has walled up my ways with cut stone.
He has made my paths crooked.
10 He is to me as a bear lying in wait,
as a lion in hiding.
11 He has turned away my path,
and pulled me in pieces.
He has made me desolate.
12 He has bent his bow,
and set me as a mark for the arrow.
13 He has caused the shafts of his quiver to enter into my kidneys.
14 I have become a derision to all my people,
and their song all day long.
15 He has filled me with bitterness.
He has stuffed me with wormwood.
16 He has also broken my teeth with gravel.
He has covered me with ashes.
17 You have removed my soul far away from peace.
I forgot prosperity.
18 I said, “My strength has perished,
along with my expectation from Yahweh.”
19 Remember my affliction and my misery,
the wormwood and the bitterness.
20 My soul still remembers them,
and is bowed down within me.
21 This I recall to my mind;
therefore I have hope.
22 It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed,
because his mercies don’t fail.
23 They are new every morning.
Great is your faithfulness.
24 “Yahweh is my portion,” says my soul.
“Therefore I will hope in him.”
25 Yahweh is good to those who wait for him,
to the soul who seeks him.
26 It is good that a man should hope
and quietly wait for the salvation of Yahweh.
27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
28 Let him sit alone and keep silence,
because he has laid it on him.
29 Let him put his mouth in the dust,
if it is so that there may be hope.
30 Let him give his cheek to him who strikes him.
Let him be filled full of reproach.
31 For the Lord will not cast off forever.
32 For though he causes grief,
yet he will have compassion according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses.
33 For he does not afflict willingly,
nor grieve the children of men.
34 To crush under foot all the prisoners of the earth,
35 to turn away the right of a man before the face of the Most High,
36 to subvert a man in his cause, the Lord doesn’t approve.
37 Who is he who says, and it comes to pass,
when the Lord doesn’t command it?
38 Doesn’t evil and good come out of the mouth of the Most High?
39 Why should a living man complain,
a man for the punishment of his sins?
40 Let us search and try our ways,
and turn again to Yahweh.
41 Let’s lift up our heart with our hands to God[a] in the heavens.
42 “We have transgressed and have rebelled.
You have not pardoned.
43 “You have covered us with anger and pursued us.
You have killed.
You have not pitied.
44 You have covered yourself with a cloud,
so that no prayer can pass through.
45 You have made us an off-scouring and refuse
in the middle of the peoples.
46 “All our enemies have opened their mouth wide against us.
47 Terror and the pit have come on us,
devastation and destruction.”
48 My eye runs down with streams of water,
for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
49 My eye pours down
and doesn’t cease,
without any intermission,
50 until Yahweh looks down,
and sees from heaven.
51 My eye affects my soul,
because of all the daughters of my city.
52 They have chased me relentlessly like a bird,
those who are my enemies without cause.
53 They have cut off my life in the dungeon,
and have cast a stone on me.
54 Waters flowed over my head.
I said, “I am cut off.”
55 I called on your name, Yahweh,
out of the lowest dungeon.
56 You heard my voice:
“Don’t hide your ear from my sighing,
and my cry.”
57 You came near in the day that I called on you.
You said, “Don’t be afraid.”
58 Lord, you have pleaded the causes of my soul.
You have redeemed my life.
59 Yahweh, you have seen my wrong.
Judge my cause.
60 You have seen all their vengeance
and all their plans against me.
61 You have heard their reproach, Yahweh,
and all their plans against me,
62 the lips of those that rose up against me,
and their plots against me all day long.
63 You see their sitting down and their rising up.
I am their song.
64 You will pay them back, Yahweh,
according to the work of their hands.
65 You will give them hardness of heart,
your curse to them.
66 You will pursue them in anger,
and destroy them from under the heavens of Yahweh.

stänger han ute min bön.
9 Med huggen sten har han spärrat av mina vägar,

10 En björn som ligger på lur är han mot mig,
ett lejon som ligger i försåt.
11 Han har fört mig på avvägar och rivit mig i stycken.
Förödelse lät han drabba mig.
12 Han har spänt sin båge
och ställt mig som ett mål för sin pil.

13 Han har låtit pilar från sitt koger
gå in i mina njurar.
14 Jag blev ett åtlöje för hela mitt folk,
deras nidvisa dagen lång.
15 Han har mättat mig med bitterhet,
givit mig malört att dricka.

16 Han har krossat mina tänder mot stenar,
han har täckt mig med aska.
17 Du har drivit min själ bort från friden,
jag har glömt vad lycka är.
18 Jag sade: "Det är slut med min livskraft
och mitt hopp till Herren."

19 Tänk på mitt elände och min hemlöshet,
malörten och giftet!
20 Ständigt tänker min själ på det
och är bedrövad i mig.
21 Detta tar jag till hjärtat,
därför har jag hopp:

22 Herrens nåd är det att det inte är ute med oss,
ty det är inte slut med hans barmhärtighet.
23 Den är var morgon ny,
ja, stor är din trofasthet.
24 Herren är min del, det säger mig min själ,
därför står mitt hopp till honom.

25 Herren är god mot dem som väntar på honom,
mot den själ som söker honom.
26 Det är gott att i stillhet
hoppas på hjälp från Herren.
27 Det är gott för en man
att bära ett ok i sin ungdom.

28 Må han sitta ensam och tyst,
när han lägger bördor på honom.
29 Må han sänka sin mun i stoftet;
kanske finns det ännu hopp.
30 Må han vända kinden till åt den som slår honom
och låta sig mättas med smälek.

31 Ty Herren förkastar inte för evigt.
32 Om han än bedrövar,
förbarmar han sig efter sin stora nåd.
33 Ty det är inte av hjärtat
han plågar eller bedrövar människors barn.

34 Att man krossar under sina fötter
alla fångar i landet,
35 att man förnekar en man hans rätt
inför den Högstes ansikte,
36 att man handlar orätt mot någon i hans sak,
skulle Herren inte se det?

37 Vem talade och det blev så,
utan att Herren hade befallt det?
38 Kommer inte från den Högstes mun
både ont och gott?
39 Varför klagar en människa här i livet,
när hon straffas för sin synd?

40 Låt oss rannsaka våra vägar och pröva dem,
låt oss vända om till Herren!
41 Låt oss lyfta upp våra hjärtan och våra händer
till Gud i himlen!
42 Vi har syndat och varit upproriska,
och du har inte förlåtit.

43 Du har dolt dig i vrede och förföljt oss,
du har dödat och inte visat förbarmande.
44 Du har dolt dig i moln,
så att ingen bön når fram.
45 Du har gjort oss till avskum och förakt
mitt ibland folken.

alla våra fiender.
47 Faror och fallgropar möter oss,
förödelse och undergång.
48 Vattenbäckar strömmar från mitt öga,
ty dottern mitt folk går under.

49 Mitt öga flödar utan uppehåll,
det får ingen vila,
50 förrän Herren blickar ner
från himlen och ser.
51 Mitt öga vållar min själ plåga
på grund av alla unga kvinnor i min stad.

52 De har ivrigt jagat mig som en fågel,
de som utan orsak är mina fiender.
53 De ville utsläcka mitt liv här i gropen,
de kastade sten på mig.
54 Vatten steg mig över huvudet.
Jag sade: "Jag är förlorad!"

55 Jag åkallade ditt namn, Herre,
längst nere i gropen.
56 Du har hört min röst,
tillslut inte ditt öra
när jag ber om lindring och hjälp.
57 Du kom mig nära när jag åkallade dig,
du sade: "Frukta inte!"

du förlossar mitt liv.
59 Du ser, Herre, den orätt jag får utstå.
Döm i min sak!

2 He has driven me away and made me walk
in darkness(C) rather than light;
3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me(D)
again and again, all day long.
4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old(E)
and has broken my bones.(F)
5 He has besieged me and surrounded me
with bitterness(G) and hardship.(H)
6 He has made me dwell in darkness
like those long dead.(I)
7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape;(J)
he has weighed me down with chains.(K)
8 Even when I call out or cry for help,(L)
he shuts out my prayer.(M)
9 He has barred(N) my way with blocks of stone;
he has made my paths crooked.(O)
10 Like a bear lying in wait,
like a lion(P) in hiding,(Q)
11 he dragged me from the path and mangled(R) me
and left me without help.
12 He drew his bow(S)
and made me the target(T) for his arrows.(U)
13 He pierced(V) my heart
with arrows from his quiver.(W)
14 I became the laughingstock(X) of all my people;(Y)
they mock me in song(Z) all day long.
15 He has filled me with bitter herbs
and given me gall to drink.(AA)
16 He has broken my teeth with gravel;(AB)
he has trampled me in the dust.(AC)
17 I have been deprived of peace;
I have forgotten what prosperity is.
18 So I say, “My splendor is gone
and all that I had hoped from the Lord.”(AD)
19 I remember my affliction and my wandering,
the bitterness(AE) and the gall.(AF)
20 I well remember them,
and my soul is downcast(AG) within me.(AH)
21 Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:
22 Because of the Lord’s great love(AI) we are not consumed,(AJ)
for his compassions never fail.(AK)
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.(AL)
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;(AM)
therefore I will wait for him.”
25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;(AN)
26 it is good to wait quietly(AO)
for the salvation of the Lord.(AP)
27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke
while he is young.
28 Let him sit alone in silence,(AQ)
for the Lord has laid it on him.
29 Let him bury his face in the dust(AR)—
there may yet be hope.(AS)
30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him,(AT)
and let him be filled with disgrace.(AU)
31 For no one is cast off
by the Lord forever.(AV)
32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion,
so great is his unfailing love.(AW)
33 For he does not willingly bring affliction
or grief to anyone.(AX)
34 To crush underfoot
all prisoners in the land,
35 to deny people their rights
before the Most High,(AY)
36 to deprive them of justice—
would not the Lord see such things?(AZ)
37 Who can speak and have it happen
if the Lord has not decreed it?(BA)
38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
that both calamities and good things come?(BB)
39 Why should the living complain
when punished for their sins?(BC)
40 Let us examine our ways and test them,(BD)
and let us return to the Lord.(BE)
41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands
to God in heaven,(BF) and say:
42 “We have sinned and rebelled(BG)
and you have not forgiven.(BH)
43 “You have covered yourself with anger and pursued(BI) us;
you have slain without pity.(BJ)
44 You have covered yourself with a cloud(BK)
so that no prayer(BL) can get through.(BM)
45 You have made us scum(BN) and refuse
among the nations.
46 “All our enemies have opened their mouths
wide(BO) against us.(BP)
47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls,(BQ)
ruin and destruction.(BR)”
48 Streams of tears(BS) flow from my eyes(BT)
because my people are destroyed.(BU)
49 My eyes will flow unceasingly,
without relief,(BV)
50 until the Lord looks down
from heaven and sees.(BW)
51 What I see brings grief to my soul
because of all the women of my city.
52 Those who were my enemies without cause
hunted me like a bird.(BX)
53 They tried to end my life in a pit(BY)
and threw stones at me;
54 the waters closed over my head,(BZ)
and I thought I was about to perish.(CA)
55 I called on your name, Lord,
from the depths(CB) of the pit.(CC)
56 You heard my plea:(CD) “Do not close your ears
to my cry for relief.”
57 You came near(CE) when I called you,
and you said, “Do not fear.”(CF)
58 You, Lord, took up my case;(CG)
you redeemed my life.(CH)
59 Lord, you have seen the wrong done to me.(CI)
Uphold my cause!(CJ)
60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance,
all their plots against me.(CK)
