3 Eu sou o homem que viu a aflição
trazida pela vara da sua ira.
2 Ele me impeliu e me fez andar na escuridão,
e não na luz;
3 sim, ele voltou sua mão contra mim
vez após vez, o tempo todo.
4 Fez que a minha pele e a minha carne
envelhecessem
e quebrou os meus ossos.
5 Ele me sitiou e me cercou
de amargura e de pesar.
6 Fez-me habitar na escuridão
como os que há muito morreram.
7 Cercou-me de muros,
e não posso escapar;
atou-me a pesadas correntes.
8 Mesmo quando chamo ou grito por socorro,
ele rejeita a minha oração.
9 Ele impediu o meu caminho
com blocos de pedra;
e fez tortuosas as minhas sendas.
10 Como um urso à espreita,
como um leão escondido,
11 arrancou-me do caminho e despedaçou-me,
deixando-me abandonado.
12 Preparou o seu arco
e me fez alvo de suas flechas.
13 Atingiu o meu coração
com flechas de sua aljava.
14 Tornei-me objeto de riso
de todo o meu povo;
nas suas canções
eles zombam de mim o tempo todo.
15 Fez-me comer ervas amargas
e fartou-me de fel.
16 Quebrou os meus dentes com pedras;
e pisoteou-me no pó.
17 Tirou-me a paz;
esqueci-me o que é prosperidade.
18 Por isso digo: “Meu esplendor já se foi,
bem como tudo o que eu esperava do Senhor”.
19 Lembro-me da minha aflição
e do meu delírio,
da minha amargura e do meu pesar.
20 Lembro-me bem disso tudo,
e a minha alma desfalece dentro de mim.
21 Todavia, lembro-me também
do que pode me dar esperança:
22 Graças ao grande amor do Senhor
é que não somos consumidos,
pois as suas misericórdias são inesgotáveis.
23 Renovam-se cada manhã;
grande é a sua fidelidade!
24 Digo a mim mesmo:
A minha porção é o Senhor;
portanto, nele porei a minha esperança.
25 O Senhor é bom para com aqueles
cuja esperança está nele,
para com aqueles que o buscam;
26 é bom esperar tranqüilo
pela salvação do Senhor.
27 É bom que o homem suporte o jugo
enquanto é jovem.
28 Leve-o sozinho e em silêncio,
porque o Senhor o pôs sobre ele.
29 Ponha o seu rosto no pó;
talvez ainda haja esperança.
30 Ofereça o rosto a quem o quer ferir,
e engula a desonra.
31 Porque o Senhor
não o desprezará para sempre.
32 Embora ele traga tristeza,
mostrará compaixão,
tão grande é o seu amor infalível.
33 Porque não é do seu agrado trazer aflição
e tristeza aos filhos dos homens,
34 esmagar com os pés
todos os prisioneiros da terra,
35 negar a alguém os seus direitos,
enfrentando o Altíssimo,
36 impedir a alguém o acesso à justiça;
não veria o Senhor tais coisas?
37 Quem poderá falar e fazer acontecer,
se o Senhor não o tiver decretado?
38 Não é da boca do Altíssimo que vêm
tanto as desgraças como as bênçãos?
39 Como pode um homem reclamar
quando é punido por seus pecados?
40 Examinemos e coloquemos à prova
os nossos caminhos,
e depois voltemos ao Senhor.
41 Levantemos o coração e as mãos
para Deus, que está nos céus, e digamos:
42 “Pecamos e nos rebelamos,
e tu não nos perdoaste.
43 Tu te cobriste de ira e nos perseguiste,
massacraste-nos sem piedade.
44 Tu te escondeste atrás de uma nuvem
para que nenhuma oração chegasse a ti.
45 Tu nos tornaste escória
e refugo entre as nações.
46 Todos os nossos inimigos
escancaram a boca contra nós.
47 Sofremos terror e ciladas,
ruína e destruição”.
48 Rios de lágrimas correm dos meus olhos
porque o meu povo foi destruído.
49 Meus olhos choram sem parar,
sem nenhum descanso,
50 até que o Senhor contemple dos céus
e veja.
51 O que eu enxergo enche-me a alma
de tristeza,
de pena de todas as mulheres da minha cidade.
52 Aqueles que, sem motivo,
eram meus inimigos
caçaram-me como a um passarinho.
53 Procuraram fazer minha vida
acabar na cova
e me jogaram pedras;
54 as águas me encobriram a cabeça,
e cheguei a pensar
que o fim de tudo tinha chegado.
55 Clamei pelo teu nome, Senhor,
das profundezas da cova.
56 Tu ouviste o meu clamor:
“Não feches os teus ouvidos
aos meus gritos de socorro”.
57 Tu te aproximaste quando a ti clamei,
e disseste: “Não tenha medo”.
58 Senhor, tu assumiste a minha causa;
e redimiste a minha vida.
59 Tu tens visto, Senhor,
o mal que me tem sido feito.
Toma a teu cargo a minha causa!
60 Tu viste como é terrível a vingança deles,
todas as suas ciladas contra mim.
61 Senhor, tu ouviste os seus insultos,
todas as suas ciladas contra mim,
62 aquilo que os meus inimigos sussurram
e murmuram o tempo todo contra mim.
63 Olha para eles! Sentados ou em pé,
zombam de mim com as suas canções.
64 Dá-lhes o que merecem, Senhor,
conforme o que as suas mãos têm feito.
65 Coloca um véu sobre os seus corações
e esteja a tua maldição sobre eles.
66 Persegue-os com fúria e elimina-os
de debaixo dos teus céus, ó Senhor.

3 [a]I am the man who has seen affliction(A)
by the rod of the Lord’s wrath.(B)
2 He has driven me away and made me walk
in darkness(C) rather than light;
3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me(D)
again and again, all day long.
4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old(E)
and has broken my bones.(F)
5 He has besieged me and surrounded me
with bitterness(G) and hardship.(H)
6 He has made me dwell in darkness
like those long dead.(I)
7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape;(J)
he has weighed me down with chains.(K)
8 Even when I call out or cry for help,(L)
he shuts out my prayer.(M)
9 He has barred(N) my way with blocks of stone;
he has made my paths crooked.(O)
10 Like a bear lying in wait,
like a lion(P) in hiding,(Q)
11 he dragged me from the path and mangled(R) me
and left me without help.
12 He drew his bow(S)
and made me the target(T) for his arrows.(U)
13 He pierced(V) my heart
with arrows from his quiver.(W)
14 I became the laughingstock(X) of all my people;(Y)
they mock me in song(Z) all day long.
15 He has filled me with bitter herbs
and given me gall to drink.(AA)
16 He has broken my teeth with gravel;(AB)
he has trampled me in the dust.(AC)
17 I have been deprived of peace;
I have forgotten what prosperity is.
18 So I say, “My splendor is gone
and all that I had hoped from the Lord.”(AD)
19 I remember my affliction and my wandering,
the bitterness(AE) and the gall.(AF)
20 I well remember them,
and my soul is downcast(AG) within me.(AH)
21 Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:
22 Because of the Lord’s great love(AI) we are not consumed,(AJ)
for his compassions never fail.(AK)
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.(AL)
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;(AM)
therefore I will wait for him.”
25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;(AN)
26 it is good to wait quietly(AO)
for the salvation of the Lord.(AP)
27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke
while he is young.
28 Let him sit alone in silence,(AQ)
for the Lord has laid it on him.
29 Let him bury his face in the dust(AR)—
there may yet be hope.(AS)
30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him,(AT)
and let him be filled with disgrace.(AU)
31 For no one is cast off
by the Lord forever.(AV)
32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion,
so great is his unfailing love.(AW)
33 For he does not willingly bring affliction
or grief to anyone.(AX)
34 To crush underfoot
all prisoners in the land,
35 to deny people their rights
before the Most High,(AY)
36 to deprive them of justice—
would not the Lord see such things?(AZ)
37 Who can speak and have it happen
if the Lord has not decreed it?(BA)
38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
that both calamities and good things come?(BB)
39 Why should the living complain
when punished for their sins?(BC)
40 Let us examine our ways and test them,(BD)
and let us return to the Lord.(BE)
41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands
to God in heaven,(BF) and say:
42 “We have sinned and rebelled(BG)
and you have not forgiven.(BH)
43 “You have covered yourself with anger and pursued(BI) us;
you have slain without pity.(BJ)
44 You have covered yourself with a cloud(BK)
so that no prayer(BL) can get through.(BM)
45 You have made us scum(BN) and refuse
among the nations.
46 “All our enemies have opened their mouths
wide(BO) against us.(BP)
47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls,(BQ)
ruin and destruction.(BR)”
48 Streams of tears(BS) flow from my eyes(BT)
because my people are destroyed.(BU)
49 My eyes will flow unceasingly,
without relief,(BV)
50 until the Lord looks down
from heaven and sees.(BW)
51 What I see brings grief to my soul
because of all the women of my city.
52 Those who were my enemies without cause
hunted me like a bird.(BX)
53 They tried to end my life in a pit(BY)
and threw stones at me;
54 the waters closed over my head,(BZ)
and I thought I was about to perish.(CA)
55 I called on your name, Lord,
from the depths(CB) of the pit.(CC)
56 You heard my plea:(CD) “Do not close your ears
to my cry for relief.”
57 You came near(CE) when I called you,
and you said, “Do not fear.”(CF)
58 You, Lord, took up my case;(CG)
you redeemed my life.(CH)
59 Lord, you have seen the wrong done to me.(CI)
Uphold my cause!(CJ)
60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance,
all their plots against me.(CK)
