The Birth of Samson(A)
13 Again the children of Israel (B)did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord delivered them (C)into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.
2 Now there was a certain man from (D)Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had no children. 3 And the (E)Angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son. 4 Now therefore, please be careful (F)not to drink wine or similar drink, and not to eat anything unclean. 5 For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. And no (G)razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be (H)a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall (I)begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.”
6 So the woman came and told her husband, saying, (J)“A Man of God came to me, and His (K)countenance[a] was like the countenance of the Angel of God, very awesome; but I (L)did not ask Him where He was from, and He did not tell me His name. 7 And He said to me, ‘Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. Now drink no wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’ ”
8 Then Manoah prayed to the Lord, and said, “O my Lord, please let the Man of God whom You sent come to us again and teach us what we shall do for the child who will be born.”
9 And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and the Angel of God came to the woman again as she was sitting in the field; but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10 Then the woman ran in haste and told her husband, and said to him, “Look, the Man who came to me the other day has just now appeared to me!”
11 So Manoah arose and followed his wife. When he came to the Man, he said to Him, “Are You the Man who spoke to this woman?”
And He said, “I am.”
12 Manoah said, “Now let Your words come to pass! What will be the boy’s rule of life, and his work?”
13 So the Angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful. 14 She may not eat anything that comes from the vine, (M)nor may she drink wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean. All that I commanded her let her observe.”
15 Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, “Please (N)let us detain You, and we will prepare a young goat for You.”
16 And the Angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Though you detain Me, I will not eat your food. But if you offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to the Lord.” (For Manoah did not know He was the Angel of the Lord.)
17 Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, “What is Your name, that when Your words come to pass we may honor You?”
18 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, (O)“Why do you ask My name, seeing it is wonderful?”
19 So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering, (P)and offered it upon the rock to the Lord. And He did a wondrous thing while Manoah and his wife looked on— 20 it happened as the flame went up toward heaven from the altar—the Angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar! When Manoah and his wife saw this, they (Q)fell on their faces to the ground. 21 When the Angel of the Lord appeared no more to Manoah and his wife, (R)then Manoah knew that He was the Angel of the Lord.
22 And Manoah said to his wife, (S)“We shall surely die, because we have seen God!”
23 But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had desired to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things, nor would He have told us such things as these at this time.”
24 So the woman bore a son and called his name (T)Samson; and (U)the child grew, and the Lord blessed him. 25 (V)And the Spirit of the Lord began to move upon him at [b]Mahaneh Dan (W)between Zorah and (X)Eshtaol.

But Manoah her husband was not with her. 10 So the woman ran quickly and told her husband, “Behold, the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me.” 11 And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to this woman?” And he said, “I am.” 12 And Manoah said, “Now when your words come true, (M)what is to be the child's manner of life, and what is his mission?” 13 And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful. 14 She may not eat of anything that comes from the vine, (N)neither let her drink wine or strong drink, or eat any unclean thing. All that I commanded her let her observe.”
15 Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “Please let us detain you and (O)prepare a young goat for you.” 16 And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “If you detain me, I will not eat of your food. 21 The angel of the Lord appeared no more to Manoah and to his wife. (U)Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the Lord. 22 And Manoah said to his wife, (V)“We shall surely die, for we have seen God.” 23 But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering at our hands, or shown us all these things, or now announced to us such things as these.” 24 And the woman bore a son and called his name Samson. (W)And the young man grew, and the Lord blessed him. 25 (X)And the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Mahaneh-dan, between (Y)Zorah and Eshtaol.

13 Los israelitas volvieron a hacer lo que desagrada al Señor y el Señor los dejó a merced de los filisteos durante cuarenta años.
2 Había un hombre en Sorá, de la tribu de Dan, llamado Manóaj. Su mujer era estéril y no había tenido hijos. 3 El ángel del Señor se apareció a esta mujer y le dijo:
— Mira, eres estéril y no has tenido hijos, pero vas a concebir y darás a luz un hijo. 4 En adelante guárdate de beber vino o bebidas fermentadas y no comas nada impuro. 5 Porque vas a concebir y a dar a luz un hijo. No pasará la navaja por su cabeza, porque el niño será un consagrado a Dios desde el vientre de su madre. Él librará a Israel del dominio filisteo.
6 La mujer fue a decírselo a su marido:
— Un hombre de Dios ha venido a verme; su aspecto era sobrecogedor, como el de un ángel de Dios. No le he preguntado de dónde venía ni él me ha manifestado su nombre. 7 Pero me ha dicho: “Vas a concebir y a dar a luz un hijo. En adelante no bebas vino ni bebida fermentada y no comas nada impuro, porque el niño será un consagrado a Dios desde el vientre de su madre hasta el día de su muerte”.
8 Manóaj invocó al Señor de esta manera:
— Te ruego, Señor, que el hombre de Dios que has enviado venga otra vez a vernos y nos instruya sobre lo que tenemos que hacer con el niño cuando nazca.
9 Dios escuchó a Manóaj y el ángel de Dios se le presentó otra vez a la mujer cuando estaba ella sentada en el campo. Su marido Manóaj no estaba con ella. 10 La mujer corrió en seguida a informar a su marido:
— Mira, aquel hombre que vino a verme el otro día, se me ha aparecido.
11 Manóaj se levantó y, siguiendo a su mujer, llegó donde estaba el hombre y le dijo:
— ¿Eres tú el que ha hablado con esta mujer?
Él respondió:
— Yo soy.
12 Le dijo Manóaj:
— Cuando tu palabra se cumpla, ¿cuál deberá ser el estilo de vida y la conducta del niño?
13 El ángel del Señor respondió a Manóaj:
— Deberá abstenerse de todo lo que indiqué a esta mujer. 14 No probará nada de lo que procede de la vid, no beberá vino ni bebida fermentada, ni comerá nada impuro; así observará todo lo que le he mandado.
15 Manóaj dijo entonces al ángel del Señor:
— Por favor, permanece un poco más con nosotros y te prepararemos un cabrito.
16 Porque Manóaj no sabía que era el ángel del Señor. Pero el ángel del Señor dijo a Manóaj:
— Aunque me obligues a quedarme, no probaré tu comida. Pero, si quieres, prepara un holocausto y ofréceselo al Señor.
17 Manóaj preguntó entonces al ángel del Señor:
— ¿Cómo te llamas, para que, cuando se cumpla tu palabra, te lo podamos agradecer?
18 El ángel del Señor le respondió:
— ¿Por qué me preguntas el nombre? Es misterioso.
19 Manóaj tomó el cabrito y la ofrenda y se lo ofreció sobre la roca en holocausto al Señor, el que actúa misteriosamente, mientras Manóaj y su mujer lo contemplaban. 20 Cuando la llama se elevó desde el altar hacia el cielo, el ángel del Señor subió en la llama. Manóaj y su mujer, que lo estaban contemplando, cayeron rostro en tierra. 21 Al desaparecer el ángel del Señor de la vista de Manóaj y de su mujer, Manóaj comprendió que era el ángel del Señor. 22 Y dijo Manóaj a su mujer:
— Seguro que vamos a morir, porque hemos visto a Dios.
23 Su mujer le respondió:
— Si el Señor hubiera querido matarnos, no habría aceptado de nuestra mano el holocausto ni la ofrenda, ni nos habría revelado todas estas cosas, ni nos habría hecho oír cosa semejante.
24 La mujer dio a luz un hijo y le puso de nombre Sansón. El niño creció y el Señor lo bendijo. 25 Y el espíritu del Señor comenzó a actuar por medio de él en el Campamento de Dan, entre Sorá y Estaol.
