Gideon Surprises and Routs the Midianites
7 Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the troops that were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Harod; and the camp of Midian was north of them, below[a] the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
2 The Lord said to Gideon, “The troops with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand. Israel would only take the credit away from me, saying, ‘My own hand has delivered me.’ 3 Now therefore proclaim this in the hearing of the troops, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home.’” Thus Gideon sifted them out;[b] twenty-two thousand returned, and ten thousand remained.
4 Then the Lord said to Gideon, “The troops are still too many; take them down to the water and I will sift them out for you there. When I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go with you; and when I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.” 5 So he brought the troops down to the water; and the Lord said to Gideon, “All those who lap the water with their tongues, as a dog laps, you shall put to one side; all those who kneel down to drink, putting their hands to their mouths,[c] you shall put to the other side.” 6 The number of those that lapped was three hundred; but all the rest of the troops knelt down to drink water. 7 Then the Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred that lapped I will deliver you, and give the Midianites into your hand. Let all the others go to their homes.” 8 So he took the jars of the troops from their hands,[d] and their trumpets; and he sent all the rest of Israel back to their own tents, but retained the three hundred. The camp of Midian was below him in the valley.
9 That same night the Lord said to him, “Get up, attack the camp; for I have given it into your hand. 10 But if you fear to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah; 11 and you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to attack the camp.” Then he went down with his servant Purah to the outposts of the armed men that were in the camp. 12 The Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the east lay along the valley as thick as locusts; and their camels were without number, countless as the sand on the seashore. 13 When Gideon arrived, there was a man telling a dream to his comrade; and he said, “I had a dream, and in it a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell; it turned upside down, and the tent collapsed.” 14 And his comrade answered, “This is no other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, a man of Israel; into his hand God has given Midian and all the army.”
15 When Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped; and he returned to the camp of Israel, and said, “Get up; for the Lord has given the army of Midian into your hand.” 16 After he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and put trumpets into the hands of all of them, and empty jars, with torches inside the jars, 17 he said to them, “Look at me, and do the same; when I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do. 18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets around the whole camp, and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon!’”
19 So Gideon and the hundred who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch; and they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands. 20 So the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars, holding in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow; and they cried, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 Every man stood in his place all around the camp, and all the men in camp ran; they cried out and fled. 22 When they blew the three hundred trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his fellow and against all the army; and the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah,[e] as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath. 23 And the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and they pursued after the Midianites.
24 Then Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters against them, as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they seized the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan. 25 They captured the two captains of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the wine press of Zeeb, as they pursued the Midianites. They brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.

4 Il Signore disse a Gedeone: «La gente è ancora troppo numerosa; falla scendere all’acqua dove io li sceglierò per te. Quello del quale ti dirò: “Questo vada con te”, andrà con te; e quello del quale ti dirò: “Questo non vada con te”, non andrà». 5 Gedeone fece dunque scendere la gente all’acqua, e il Signore gli disse: «Tutti quelli che leccheranno l’acqua con la lingua, come la lecca il cane, li metterai da parte; così pure tutti quelli che, per bere, si metteranno in ginocchio». 6 Il numero di quelli che leccarono l’acqua, portandosela alla bocca nella mano, fu di trecento uomini; tutto il resto della gente si mise in ginocchio per bere l’acqua. 7 Allora il Signore disse a Gedeone: «Mediante questi trecento uomini che hanno leccato l’acqua io vi libererò e metterò i Madianiti nelle tue mani. Tutto il resto della gente se ne vada, ognuno a casa sua». 8 I trecento presero i viveri del popolo e le sue trombe; e Gedeone, rimandati tutti gli altri uomini d’Israele, ciascuno alla sua tenda, trattenne questi con sé. L’accampamento di Madian era sotto il suo, nella valle.
9 Quella stessa notte il Signore disse a Gedeone: «Àlzati, piomba sull’accampamento, perché io l’ho messo nelle tue mani. 10 Ma se hai paura di farlo, scendi con Pura, tuo servo, 11 e udrai quello che dicono; e, dopo questo, le tue mani saranno fortificate per piombare sull’accampamento». Egli dunque scese con Pura, suo servo, fino agli avamposti dell’accampamento. 12 I Madianiti, gli Amalechiti e tutti i popoli dell’Oriente erano sparsi nella valle come una moltitudine di cavallette e i loro cammelli erano innumerevoli come la sabbia che è sulla riva del mare. 13 Quando Gedeone arrivò, un uomo stava raccontando un sogno a un suo compagno e gli diceva: «Ho fatto un sogno. C’era un pane tondo, d’orzo, che rotolava nell’accampamento di Madian; giungeva alla tenda, la investiva in modo da farla cadere, da rovesciarla, da lasciarla per terra». 14 Il suo compagno gli rispose e gli disse: «Questo non è altro che la spada di Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, uomo d’Israele; Dio ha messo nelle sue mani Madian e tutto l’accampamento».
15 Quando Gedeone ebbe udito il racconto del sogno e la sua interpretazione, adorò Dio; poi tornò all’accampamento d’Israele e disse: «Alzatevi, perché il Signore ha messo nelle vostre mani l’accampamento di Madian!» 16 Divise i trecento uomini in tre schiere, consegnò a tutti quanti delle trombe e delle brocche vuote con delle fiaccole nelle brocche, 17 e disse loro: «Guardate me e fate come farò io. Quando sarò giunto all’estremità dell’accampamento, come farò io, così farete voi; 18 e quando io con tutti quelli che sono con me suonerò la tromba, anche voi suonerete le trombe intorno a tutto l’accampamento e direte: “Per il Signore e per Gedeone!”».
19 Gedeone e i cento uomini che erano con lui giunsero all’estremità dell’accampamento, al principio del cambio di mezzanotte[b], quando si era appena dato il cambio alle sentinelle. Suonarono le trombe e spezzarono le brocche che tenevano in mano. 20 Allora le tre schiere suonarono le trombe e spezzarono le brocche; con la sinistra presero le fiaccole e con la destra le trombe per suonare, e si misero a gridare: «La spada per il Signore e per Gedeone!» 21 Ognuno di loro rimase al suo posto, intorno all’accampamento; e tutti quelli dell’accampamento si misero a correre, a gridare, a fuggire. 22 Mentre quelli suonavano le trecento trombe, il Signore fece rivolgere la spada di ciascuno contro il compagno per tutto l’accampamento. L’esercito madianita fuggì fino a Bet-Sitta, verso Serera, fino al limite di Abel-Meola, presso Tabbat. 23 Gli Israeliti di Neftali, di Ascer e di tutto Manasse si radunarono e inseguirono i Madianiti.
24 Gedeone mandò dei messaggeri per tutta la regione montuosa di Efraim a dire: «Scendete incontro ai Madianiti e tagliate loro il passo delle acque fino a Bet-Bara e i guadi del Giordano». Così tutti gli uomini di Efraim furono radunati e si impadronirono dei passi delle acque fino a Bet-Bara e dei guadi del Giordano. 25 Presero due prìncipi di Madian, Oreb e Zeeb; uccisero Oreb alla roccia di Oreb e Zeeb al torchio di Zeeb; inseguirono i Madianiti e portarono le teste di Oreb e di Zeeb a Gedeone, dall’altro lato del Giordano.

2 Der Herr aber sprach zu Gideon: Das Volk, das bei dir ist, ist zu zahlreich, als dass ich Midian in seine Hand geben könnte. Israel könnte sich sonst gegen mich rühmen und sagen: Meine [eigene] Hand hat mich gerettet!
3 So rufe nun vor den Ohren des Volkes aus und sage: Wer sich fürchtet und wem graut, der kehre um und flüchte schnell vom Bergland Gilead! Da kehrten etwa 22 000 vom Volk um, sodass nur 10 000 übrig blieben.
4 Und der Herr sprach zu Gideon: Das Volk ist noch zu zahlreich! Führe sie hinab an das Wasser; dort will ich sie dir prüfen; und von welchem ich dir sagen werde, dass er mit dir ziehen soll, der soll mit dir ziehen; von welchem ich aber sagen werde, dass er nicht mit dir ziehen soll, der soll nicht ziehen!
5 Und er führte das Volk an das Wasser hinab. Und der Herr sprach zu Gideon: Wer mit seiner Zunge von dem Wasser leckt, wie ein Hund leckt, den stelle gesondert für sich auf; ebenso, wer auf seine Knie fällt, um zu trinken!
6 Da war die Zahl derer, die von der Hand in den Mund geleckt hatten, 300 Mann; alles übrige Volk war auf die Knie gefallen, um Wasser zu trinken.
7 Und der Herr sprach zu Gideon: Durch die 300 Mann, die geleckt haben, will ich euch erretten und die Midianiter in deine Hand geben; aber das ganze übrige Volk soll nach Hause gehen!
8 Und sie nahmen die Verpflegung des Volkes an sich und ihre Schopharhörner[a]; aber die anderen Israeliten ließ er alle gehen, jeden in sein Zelt; und er behielt die 300 Mann bei sich. Das Lager der Midianiter aber war unter ihm, in der Ebene.
9 Und es geschah in derselben Nacht, da sprach der Herr zu ihm: »Steh auf und geh ins Lager hinab; denn ich habe es in deine Hand gegeben!
10 Fürchtest du dich aber hinabzugehen, so lass deinen Burschen Pura mit dir ins Lager hinuntersteigen,
11 damit du hörst, was sie reden. Dann werden deine Hände erstarken, dass du gegen das Lager hinabziehen wirst!« Da stieg Gideon mit seinem Burschen Pura hinunter, bis zu den äußersten Vorposten, die zum Lager gehörten.
12 Die Midianiter aber und die Amalekiter und alle Söhne des Ostens waren in die Ebene eingefallen wie eine Menge Heuschrecken; und ihre Kamele waren vor Menge nicht zu zählen, wie der Sand am Ufer des Meeres.
13 Als nun Gideon kam, siehe, da erzählte einer dem anderen einen Traum und sprach: Siehe, ich habe einen Traum gehabt; und siehe, ein Laib Gerstenbrot wälzte sich zum Lager der Midianiter; und als er an die Zelte kam, schlug er sie und warf sie nieder, sodass sie umstürzten; und er kehrte sie um, das Unterste zuoberst, und die Zelte lagen da!
14 Da antwortete der andere: Das ist nichts anderes als das Schwert Gideons, des Sohnes des Joas, des Israeliten: Gott hat die Midianiter samt dem ganzen Lager in seine Hand gegeben!
Der Kampf gegen die Midianiter
15 Als nun Gideon die Erzählung des Traumes und seine Auslegung hörte, da betete er an. Und er kehrte wieder in das Lager Israels zurück und sprach: Macht euch auf, denn der Herr hat das Lager der Midianiter in eure Hand gegeben!
16 Und er teilte die 300 Mann in drei Abteilungen und gab ihnen allen Schopharhörner in die Hand und leere Krüge und brennende Fackeln darin;
17 und er sprach zu ihnen: Schaut auf mich, und macht es ebenso! Siehe, wenn ich an den Rand des Heerlagers komme, dann macht auch ihr es, wie ich es mache!
18 Wenn ich und alle, die mit mir sind, in das Horn stoßen, so sollt auch ihr rings um das ganze Lager in die Hörner stoßen und rufen: »Für den Herrn und Gideon!«
19 Als nun Gideon und die 100 Mann, die bei ihm waren, an den Rand des Heerlagers kamen, zu Beginn der mittleren Nachtwache[b], als man eben die Wachen aufgestellt hatte, stießen sie in die Hörner und zerschlugen die Krüge in ihren Händen.
20 Da stießen alle drei Abteilungen in die Hörner und zerbrachen die Krüge. Sie hielten aber mit ihrer linken Hand die Fackeln und in ihrer rechten Hand die Hörner zum Blasen, und sie riefen: Ein Schwert für den Herrn und für Gideon!
21 Und jeder blieb an seinem Platz stehen um das Lager her; aber das ganze Lager rannte, schrie und floh.
22 Denn während die 300 Mann in die Hörner stießen, richtete der Herr in dem ganzen Lager das Schwert eines jeden gegen den anderen. Und das Heer floh bis Beth-Sitta, gegen Zererat, bis an das Ufer von Abel-Mechola, bei Tabbat.
23 Und die Männer Israels von Naphtali und Asser und von ganz Manasse wurden aufgeboten und jagten den Midianitern nach.
24 Und Gideon hatte Boten auf das ganze Bergland Ephraim gesandt und sagen lassen: Kommt herab, den Midianitern entgegen, und besetzt vor ihnen das Wasser bis nach Beth-Bara, nämlich den Jordan! 2 Akkor az Úr ezt mondta Gedeonnak: Sok ez a nép, amely veled van, nem adhatom a kezükbe Midjánt, különben még így fog dicsekedni Izráel velem szemben: Az én kezem szabadított meg engem!
3 Most azért hirdesd ki ezt a nép füle hallatára: Aki fél és retteg, az térjen vissza, távozzék a Gileád hegyéről! Erre visszatért a hadinépből huszonkétezer ember, és csak tízezer maradt ott.
4 Majd ezt mondta Gedeonnak az Úr: Még ez a nép is sok. Vezesd le őket a vízhez, hadd tegyem próbára őket ott! Amelyikről azt mondom neked, hogy menjen veled, az menjen veled. De akiről azt mondom neked, hogy ne menjen veled, az ne menjen.

9 Azon az éjszakán ezt mondta neki az Úr: Kelj föl, támadd meg a tábort, mert a kezedbe adtam azt!

11 Hallgasd meg, miről beszélnek, akkor majd felbátorodsz és rá mersz támadni a táborra! Lement tehát legényével, Purával, egészen a tábori előőrsökig.
12 Midján, Amálék és a keleti törzsek úgy ellepték a völgyet, mint egy sáskahad, tevéiknek nem volt se szeri, se száma: annyian voltak, mint a tenger partján a föveny.

Gedeon legyőzi az ellenséget
15 Amikor Gedeon meghallotta az elmesélt álmot és annak a megfejtését, leborult imádkozni. Azután visszatért Izráel táborába, és azt mondta: Keljetek föl, mert kezetekbe adta az Úr Midján táborát!
16 A háromszáz embert három csapatra osztotta, mindenkinek a kezébe egy-egy kürtöt adott, meg egy üres cserépfazekat és egy fáklyát a fazékba.
17 Majd ezt mondta nekik: Rám figyeljetek, és aszerint cselekedjetek; amikor én elérem a tábor szélét, ugyanazt tegyétek, amit én teszek!
18 Ha megfújom a kürtöt én, meg a velem levők mind, akkor ti is fújjátok meg a kürtöt az egész tábor körül, és kiáltsátok: Az Úrért és Gedeonért!
19 Amikor Gedeon és száz embere a tábor széléhez érkezett a középső őrségváltás elején - mert éppen akkor állították fel az őröket -, megfújták a kürtöket, és összetörték a kezükben levő cserépfazekakat.
20 Ekkor belefújt a kürtbe mind a három csapat, és összetörték a cserépfazekakat; bal kezükben fogták a fáklyákat jobb kezükben pedig a kürtök voltak, amelyekkel kürtöltek, és kiáltoztak: Fegyverre, az Úrért és Gedeonért!
21 Mindenki megállt a helyén a tábor körül. Az egész tábor viszont futásnak eredt, ordítozva menekültek.
22 Mert amikor megfújták a háromszáz kürtöt, az Úr egymás ellen fordította az emberek fegyvereit az egész táborban. Menekült a tábor egészen Bét-Sittáig, Cerérá felé, az ábél-mehólái partig, Tabbat fölött.
23 Ekkor fegyverbe szólították az izráelieket Naftáliból, Ásérból és egész Manasséból, és üldözőbe vették Midjánt.
24 Gedeon követeket küldött Efraim egész hegyvidékére ezzel az üzenettel: Jöjjetek le Midján elé, és foglaljátok el a vízhez, a Jordánhoz vezető utat Bétbáráig. Fegyverbe szólították az efraimiakat mind, és elfoglalták a vízhez, a Jordánhoz vezető utat Bétbáráig.

7 Le lendemain matin, Yeroubbaal, c’est-à-dire Gédéon, se mit en route avec toutes ses troupes et ils établirent leur camp près de Eyn-Harod. L’armée des Madianites était campée plus au nord dans la vallée qui s’étend au pied de la colline de Moré[a]. 2 L’Eternel dit à Gédéon : Ton armée est trop nombreuse pour que je te donne la victoire sur les Madianites. Sinon les Israélites s’en vanteraient à mes dépens, en pensant que c’est par leurs propres forces qu’ils se sont délivrés. 3 Fais donc la proclamation suivante à tes troupes : « Qui d’entre vous a peur au point de trembler[b] ? Qu’il s’éloigne du mont Galaad[c] et rentre chez lui. »
Vingt-deux mille hommes de son armée s’en allèrent, et il en resta dix mille. 4 Mais l’Eternel dit à Gédéon : Les troupes sont encore trop nombreuses. Fais-les descendre au bord du torrent, et là je les trierai pour toi. Ceux que je désignerai pour t’accompagner iront avec toi, mais ceux dont je te dirai qu’ils ne doivent pas t’accompagner n’iront pas avec toi.
5 Gédéon fit descendre ses hommes au bord du torrent, et l’Eternel lui dit : Tu mettras d’un côté tous ceux qui lapent l’eau avec la langue comme les chiens, et de l’autre côté ceux qui s’agenouillent pour boire.
6 Il y eut trois cents hommes qui prirent de l’eau dans leurs mains pour la porter à leur bouche et la laper, et tous les autres s’agenouillèrent pour boire. 7 L’Eternel dit à Gédéon : C’est avec ces trois cents hommes qui ont lapé l’eau dans leurs mains que je vous délivrerai des Madianites en vous donnant la victoire sur eux. Que tous les autres rentrent chez eux !
8 Les trois cents hommes reçurent les provisions et les cors des autres et Gédéon renvoya le gros des hommes d’Israël chez eux, en ne retenant que les trois cents hommes. Or, le camp des Madianites était en dessous du sien dans la vallée.
Le rêve du soldat ennemi
9 Cette nuit-là, l’Eternel dit à Gédéon : Va, descends attaquer le camp madianite, car je le livre en ton pouvoir. 10 Cependant, si tu as peur d’y aller, vas-y d’abord avec ton serviteur Poura. 11 Ecoute ce qu’ils disent, et cela t’encouragera ; tu descendras ensuite attaquer le camp.
Gédéon descendit donc avec son serviteur Poura jusqu’aux avant-postes du camp. 12 Les Madianites, les Amalécites et les nomades de l’Orient étaient répandus dans la vallée en aussi grand nombre qu’une nuée de sauterelles, et leurs chameaux étaient innombrables comme le sable au bord de la mer. 13 Gédéon s’approcha et il entendit un homme raconter un rêve à son camarade.
– Ecoute, disait-il, j’ai fait un rêve. Je voyais une miche de pain d’orge rouler à travers le camp de Madian ; arrivée à la tente, elle l’a frappée de plein fouet, l’a fait tomber et l’a renversée sens dessus dessous, si bien que la tente était par terre.
14 Son camarade répondit : Cela ne représente rien d’autre que l’épée de Gédéon, fils de Joas, homme d’Israël à qui Dieu donne la victoire sur Madian et toute l’armée.
15 Lorsque Gédéon eut entendu le récit du rêve et son interprétation, il se prosterna, puis il retourna au camp d’Israël et cria : Tout le monde debout, car l’Eternel vous donne la victoire sur l’armée de Madian !
16 Gédéon divisa les trois cents hommes en trois groupes et remit à chaque soldat un cor et une cruche vide dans laquelle fut mise une torche allumée. 17 Il leur dit : Vous me regarderez faire et vous ferez exactement comme moi. Je vais m’avancer jusqu’aux abords du camp. Quand j’y serai arrivé, vous n’aurez qu’à m’imiter. 18 Quand je sonnerai du cor avec ceux de mon groupe, vous sonnerez aussi du cor tout autour du camp et vous crierez : « Pour l’Eternel et pour Gédéon ! »
L’Eternel donne la victoire
19 Peu avant minuit, Gédéon et les cent hommes de son groupe arrivèrent aux abords du camp. On venait juste de remplacer les sentinelles. Soudain, ils sonnèrent du cor et cassèrent les cruches qu’ils tenaient à la main. 20 Les trois groupes sonnèrent du cor et cassèrent leurs cruches. De la main gauche, ils brandirent les torches, et de la droite ils tenaient les cors pour en sonner, et ils crièrent : « A vos épées, pour l’Eternel et pour Gédéon ! » 21 tout en restant chacun à sa place autour du camp. Les hommes dans le camp se mirent à courir, à crier et à se sauver. 22 Les trois cents Israélites continuèrent à sonner du cor, et l’Eternel fit que dans tout le camp chacun tourne son épée contre son compagnon. Finalement, ils s’enfuirent tous jusqu’à Beth-Shitta, du côté de Tseréra et jusqu’aux abords de Abel-Mehola près de Tabbath.
Des troupes israélites viennent en renfort
23 Les hommes d’Israël se rassemblèrent, ceux des tribus de Nephtali, d’Aser et de tout Manassé s’unirent et se lancèrent à la poursuite des Madianites. 24 Gédéon envoya des messagers dans toute la région montagneuse d’Ephraïm pour faire dire aux hommes de descendre afin de couper la retraite aux Madianites en occupant tous les points d’eau jusqu’à Beth-Bara et tous les gués le long du Jourdain. Tous les hommes d’Ephraïm se rassemblèrent et occupèrent les points d’eau jusqu’à Beth-Bara et les gués du Jourdain. 25 Ils capturèrent deux chefs madianites appelés Oreb et Zéeb. Ils tuèrent le premier au rocher d’Oreb et le second au pressoir de Zéeb. Ils poursuivirent les Madianites et rapportèrent les têtes d’Oreb et de Zéeb à Gédéon qui se trouvait alors à l’est du Jourdain.
