And when (A)Joshua had dismissed the people, the children of Israel went each to his own inheritance to possess the land.

Death of Joshua(B)

(C)So the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord which He had done for Israel. Now (D)Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died when he was one hundred and ten years old. (E)And they buried him within the border of his inheritance at (F)Timnath Heres, in the mountains of Ephraim, on the north side of Mount Gaash. 10 When all that generation had [a]been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who (G)did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel.

Israel’s Unfaithfulness

11 Then the children of Israel did (H)evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals; 12 and they (I)forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed (J)other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they (K)bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. 13 They forsook the Lord (L)and served [b]Baal and the [c]Ashtoreths. 14 (M)And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel. So He (N)delivered them into the hands of plunderers who despoiled them; and (O)He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they (P)could no longer stand before their enemies. 15 Wherever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for calamity, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had (Q)sworn to them. And they were greatly distressed.

16 Nevertheless, (R)the Lord raised up judges who delivered them out of the hand of those who plundered them. 17 Yet they would not listen to their judges, but they (S)played the harlot with other gods, and bowed down to them. They turned quickly from the way in which their fathers walked, in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do so. 18 And when the Lord raised up judges for them, (T)the Lord was with the judge and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; (U)for the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed them and harassed them. 19 And it came to pass, (V)when the judge was dead, that they reverted and behaved more corruptly than their fathers, by following other gods, to serve them and bow down to them. They did not cease from their own doings nor from their stubborn way.

20 Then the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel; and He said, “Because this nation has (W)transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not heeded My voice, 21 I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua (X)left when he died, 22 so (Y)that through them I may (Z)test Israel, whether they will keep the ways of the Lord, to walk in them as their fathers kept them, or not.” 23 Therefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out immediately; nor did He deliver them into the hand of Joshua.

The Nations Remaining in the Land

Now these are (AA)the nations which the Lord left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not [d]known any of the wars in Canaan (this was only so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war, at least those who had not formerly known it), namely, (AB)five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. And they were left, that He might test Israel by them, to [e]know whether they would obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

(AC)Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And (AD)they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods.

And Joshua sendeth the people away, and the sons of Israel go, each to his inheritance, to possess the land;

and the people serve Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who prolonged days after Joshua, who saw all the great work of Jehovah which He did to Israel.

And Joshua son of Nun, servant of Jehovah, dieth, a son of a hundred and ten years,

and they bury him in the border of his inheritance, in Timnath-Heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of mount Gaash;

10 and also all that generation have been gathered unto their fathers, and another generation riseth after them who have not known Jehovah, and even the work which He hath done to Israel.

11 And the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and serve the Baalim,

12 and forsake Jehovah, God of their fathers, who bringeth them out from the land of Egypt, and go after other gods (of the gods of the peoples who [are] round about them), and bow themselves to them, and provoke Jehovah,

13 yea, they forsake Jehovah, and do service to Baal and to Ashtaroth.

14 And the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel, and He giveth them into the hand of spoilers, and they spoil them, and He selleth them into the hand of their enemies round about, and they have not been able any more to stand before their enemies;

15 in every [place] where they have gone out, the hand of Jehovah hath been against them for evil, as Jehovah hath spoken, and as Jehovah hath sworn to them, and they are distressed -- greatly.

16 And Jehovah raiseth up judges, and they save them from the hand of their spoilers;

17 and also unto their judges they have not hearkened, but have gone a-whoring after other gods, and bow themselves to them; they have turned aside [with] haste out of the way [in] which their fathers walked to obey the commands of Jehovah -- they have not done so.

18 And when Jehovah raised up to them judges -- then was Jehovah with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it repenteth Jehovah, because of their groaning from the presence of their oppressors, and of those thrusting them away.

19 And it hath come to pass, at the death of the judge -- they turn back and have done corruptly above their fathers, to go after other gods, to serve them, and to bow themselves to them; they have not fallen from their doings, and from their stiff way.

20 And the anger of Jehovah doth burn against Israel, and He saith, `Because that this nation have transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened to My voice --

21 I also continue not to dispossess any from before them of the nations which Joshua hath left when he dieth,

22 in order to try Israel by them, whether they are keeping the way of Jehovah, to go in it, as their fathers kept [it] or not.'

23 And Jehovah leaveth these nations, so as not to dispossess them hastily, and did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

And these [are] the nations which Jehovah left, to try Israel by them, all who have not known all the wars of Canaan;

(only for the sake of the generations of the sons of Israel's knowing, to teach them war, only those who formerly have not known them) --

five princes of the Philistines, and all the Canaanite, and the Zidonian, and the Hivite inhabiting mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-Hermon unto the entering in of Hamath;

and they are to prove Israel by them, to know whether they obey the commands of Jehovah that He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

And the sons of Israel have dwelt in the midst of the Canaanite, the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite,

and take their daughters to them for wives, and their daughters have given to their sons, and they serve their gods;

Joshua Dies

(A)When Joshua had dismissed the people, the sons of Israel went, each one to his inheritance, to take possession of the land. The people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who [a]survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the Lord which He had done for Israel. Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110. And they buried him in the territory of (B)his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. 10 All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and another generation rose up after them who (C)did not know the Lord, nor even the work which He had done for Israel.

Israel Serves the Baals

11 Then the sons of Israel did (D)evil in the sight of the Lord and [b]served the (E)Baals, 12 and (F)they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed other gods from the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them; so they provoked the Lord to anger. 13 They abandoned the Lord and (G)served Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14 (H)Then the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He handed them over to plunderers, and they plundered them; and (I)He sold them into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand [c]against their enemies. 15 Wherever they went, the hand of the Lord was against them for [d]evil, as the Lord had spoken and (J)just as the Lord had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.

16 (K)Then the Lord raised up judges [e]who saved them from the hands of those who plundered them. 17 Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they [f]committed infidelity with other gods and bowed down to them. They turned aside quickly from the way (L)in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do the same as their fathers. 18 And when the Lord raised up judges for them, (M)the Lord was with the judge and saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was (N)moved to pity by their groaning because of those who tormented and oppressed them. 19 But it came about, when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their obstinate ways. 20 (O)So the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has violated My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to My voice, 21 (P)I in turn will no longer drive out from them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died, 22 in order to (Q)test Israel by them, whether they will keep the way of the Lord to walk in it as their fathers [g]did, or not.” 23 So the Lord allowed those nations to remain, not driving them out quickly; and He did not hand them over to Joshua.

Idolatry Leads to Servitude

(R)Now these are the nations that the Lord left, to test Israel by them (that is, all the Israelites who had not [h]experienced any of the wars of Canaan; only in order that the generations of the sons of Israel might [i]be taught war, [j]those who had not [k]experienced it previously). These nations are: the five governors of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians, and (S)the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as [l]Lebo-hamath. They were left to (T)test Israel by them, to find out if they would [m]obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers [n]through Moses. (U)The sons of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and (V)they took their daughters for themselves as wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
