ベミヤニン族による暴行事件
19 イスラエルにまだ王がいなかったころ、あるレビ人がエフライムの山地の奥に住んでいました。その人は、ユダのベツレヘムから一人の娘をそばめとして連れて来ました。 2 ところが彼女はその人をきらって、ベツレヘムの実家へ逃げ帰り、四か月もそこにいました。 3 そこで夫は従者を一人伴い、そばめを乗せるろばをもう一頭連れて、彼女を連れ戻そうと会いに出かけたのです。彼女は訪ねて来た夫を招き入れ、父親に引き合わせると、父親も歓待してくれました。 4 勧められるまま三日間滞在し、うちとけて、楽しい時を過ごしました。
5 四日目の朝早く、出立しようと腰を上げると、父親は、朝食をすませてからにするよう熱心に勧めます。 6 そうこうするうち、たいそう楽しかったのか、父親は、もう一晩泊まってくれとしきりに頼むのです。 7 初めはなかなか承知しませんでしたが、しゅうとがあまりに頼むので断りきれず、泊まることにしました。 8 翌朝、二人が早く起きると、またも父親が、「夕方までいてください。そして、日暮れ前にお発ちなさい」と、拝み倒さんばかりに頼むのです。二人はこの日も、ごちそう攻めに会いました。
9 午後になって、夫婦と従者は出立の用意をしました。すると、しゅうとが言いました。「もう日も暮れかかった。今晩だけ泊まってお行きなさい。楽しい最後の晩を過ごそうじゃないか。明日の朝早く発てばいいだろう。」
10 しかし、今度ばかりは耳を貸さず、彼らは出立し、日暮れまでに、エブスとも呼ばれたエルサレムの近くまで来ました。 11 従者が主人に言いました。「日が暮れかかっておりますので、これ以上旅を続けるわけにはいきません。今夜はここに泊まってはいかがでしょう。」
12-13 「いや、だめだ。イスラエル人のいない異教徒の町だから。ギブアか、できればラマまで行こう。」
14 こうして、一行は旅を続けました。ベニヤミン族の村ギブアまで来た時、ちょうど日が沈みました。 15 ここで一泊しようと町へ入って行きましたが、だれも招き入れてくれません。しかたなく町の広場で野宿することにしました。 16 ちょうどそこへ、野良仕事を終えた老人が通りかかりました。そこはベニヤミンの領地でしたが、この老人はエフライムの山地出身で、今はギブアに住んでいる人でした。 17 広場に野宿している旅人に目を留めた老人は、「どちらからお越しかな。どこまで行かれるのじゃ」と尋ねました。
18 「ユダのベツレヘムから戻る途中です。シロからそう遠くないエフライムの山奥に住んでおります。今夜は、どこの家にも泊めてもらえなかったのです。 19 ろばの餌も私たちの食糧やぶどう酒も、たくさん持っています。」
20 「お気づかいは無用ですよ。私の家にお泊まりなさい。こんな所に野宿してはいけない。」
21 老人は一行を自宅に案内しました。ろばにたっぷりまぐさをやったあと、共に食卓を囲みました。 22 夕食の席がしだいにはなやいできた時、ならず者の一団が家を取り囲み、戸をたたき始めたのです。彼らは大声で、「おまえの所に泊まった男を出せ。そいつに興味があるのだ」とどなります。 23 老人は外へ出て、彼らと話し合いました。「そんな悪いことはよしなされ。あの方は私の客人だ。 24 代わりに、私のところの生娘と客人のそばめを差し出そう。いま二人を連れて来るから、好きなようにすればいい。ただし、客人には指一本ふれてくれるな。」
25 それでも彼らは聞き入れません。すると客人のレビ人は、自分のそばめを外のならず者の前に放り出しました。彼らは夜通し代わる代わる彼女を辱め、夜が明けるころようやく解放したのです。 26 彼女は、明るくなるまで戸口に倒れたままでした。
27 旅立とうとして夫が戸を開けると、自分のそばめが手を敷居にかけたまま入口に倒れているのを見ました。 28 「さあ、立ちなさい。出かけよう」と声をかけましたが、何の返事もありません。すでに彼女は死んでいたのです。彼は死体をろばに乗せ、家まで運びました。 29 家に着くと、ナイフで死体を十二に切り分け、一つずつイスラエルの各部族に送りました。 30 それを見た民はみな、ベニヤミン人の野蛮な行為に怒りをかきたてられました。「エジプトを出て以来、こんなひどい出来事があっただろうか。この事件を見過ごすわけにはいかない。」
ベミヤミン族への報復
20 1-2 そこで全イスラエルから、ミツパに指導者たちと四十万の兵が向かい、主の前に一つの心になって集結したのです。ダンからベエル・シェバに至る全国各地はもとより、ヨルダン川の東側のギルアデからも、ぞくぞくと集まって来ました。 3 イスラエル軍がミツパに集結したという知らせは、まもなくベニヤミン領内に伝わりました。イスラエルの指導者たちは殺された女の夫を呼んで、真相を話すよう求めました。 4 「私たちは、ベニヤミン領内のギブアに行き、その夜ある家に泊まりました。 5 ところが夜中に、ギブアの者どもが家を取り囲み、私を殺そうとしたのです。一味は私のそばめに暴行を加え、無残にも殺してしまいました。 6 私はそばめの死体を十二に切り分け、イスラエルの全地に送りました。それというのも、彼らの仕打ちがあまりにむごかったからです。 7 さあ、皆さん、どうか協議してください。」
8-10 彼らは口をそろえて言いました。「ギブアの村に報復するまでは、一人たりとも家には帰らない。全軍の十分の一をくじで選び分け、食糧補給に当たらせよう。残りは結集して、こんな恥ずべきまねをしたギブアを滅ぼそう。」 11 イスラエル全国民は、そのために一丸となりました。
12 さっそくベニヤミン族に使者を立て、要求を突きつけました。「おまえたちは、あの忌まわしい事件を知っているのか。 13 あの悪事を働いた者たちを引き渡せ。彼らを処刑して、イスラエルから悪を除き去るのだ。」
しかし、ベニヤミン族は聞こうとはしませんでした。 14-15 それどころか、二万六千の兵をギブアに集め、地元ギブアから募った七百人と合流し、イスラエル軍に対抗する構えを見せたのです。 16 ベニヤミン軍には、左ききの石投げの名手が七百人いました。その腕まえは大したもので、一本の毛をねらっても的をはずさないほどでした。 17 一方、ベニヤミンを除くイスラエル軍は、総勢四十万人に上りました。
18 戦いを前にして、まずイスラエル軍は、ベテルで神に伺いを立てました。「ベニヤミンと一戦交えるのに、どの部族が先陣を切るべきでしょうか。」
すると主は、「ユダが先頭に立ちなさい」と答えました。
19-20 そこで全軍は、翌朝早く、ベニヤミンを攻撃するためにギブアへ向かいました。 21 しかし、ギブアを守っていたベニヤミン軍が不意に襲いかかり、その日のうちに二万二千人のイスラエル兵を倒したのです。 22-24 イスラエル軍は主の前で夕方まで泣き続け、再び伺いを立てました。「私たちは、同胞ベニヤミンとまだ戦うべきでしょうか。」
「戦いなさい」という主の答えが返ってきました。イスラエル軍は奮い立ち、翌日も、同じ場所で戦おうと出陣しました。 25 ところがこの日も、剣の使い手一万八千人を失うはめになったのです。 26 そこで、イスラエル全軍はベテルに上り、主の前に泣き伏して夕方まで断食し、焼き尽くすいけにえと和解のいけにえをささげました。 27-28 当時、神の契約の箱はベテルにあり、アロンの孫で、エルアザルの子ピネハスが祭司でした。
イスラエルの民は主に尋ねました。「また出陣して、兄弟ベニヤミンと戦うべきでしょうか。それとも、やめるべきでしょうか。」
すると主は、「行きなさい。明日、あなたがたはベニヤミンを打ち破ることができる」と答えました。
29 そこで、イスラエル軍はギブア周辺に伏兵を潜ませ、 30 三日目に攻撃に移り、いつものような陣形をとりました。 31 ベニヤミン軍が迎え撃とうと町から出てくると、退却すると見せかけて町からおびき出したのです。ベニヤミン軍は前回同様、ベテルとギブアを結ぶ路上でイスラエルを撃破し、たちまち三十人を倒しました。 32 ベニヤミン軍は、「また勝ったぞ！」と雄たけびを上げましたが、実はそれがイスラエル軍の作戦だったのです。初めからわざと逃げて、ベニヤミン軍を町からおびき出そうと考えていたのでした。 33 本隊はバアル・タマルまで来た時、一転して反撃に移り、ゲバの西に隠れていた伏兵一万も飛び出しました。 34 伏兵は、まだ危険に気づいていないベニヤミン軍のしんがりを襲いました。 35-39 主が助けを与えたので、イスラエル軍はベニヤミン軍を打ち破ることができたのです。その日、ベニヤミン軍は二万五、一〇〇人を失い、生き残った兵士は数えるほどでした。
実際ベニヤミン軍は、イスラエル軍が彼らの前から退却したことで、前回同様の大勝利を確信しました。しかしその時、伏兵がギブアに突入し、村にいた全員を殺し、火を放ちました。その煙を合図に、イスラエル軍は反撃に転じ、いっせいに攻撃を開始したのです。 40-41 ベニヤミン軍はうしろを振り返り、町が炎に包まれているのを見て恐怖に襲われました。危険が身に迫るのを感じ、 42 彼らは荒野へ逃げようとしましたが、イスラエル軍は追跡し、伏兵の一隊も駆けつけて、背後からベニヤミン軍を打ちました。 43 そして、包囲しながらギブアの東方へと追いつめ、彼らの大半を殺しました。 44 その戦いで、一万八千人のベニヤミン軍兵士が死にました。 45 生き残った兵は荒野へ逃げ、リモンの岩に向かいましたが、その途中で五千人が殺され、さらにギデオム付近で二千人が倒されました。 46-47 こうしてベニヤミン族は、一日で二万五千の勇士を失ったのです。リモンの岩へ逃げ延びたのはたった六百人で、四か月間そこにこもっていました。 48 その後イスラエル軍は引き返し、ベニヤミンに属するものを男も女も子どもも家畜も打ち、町々村々を片っぱしから焼き払いました。
ベミヤミン族絶滅の危機
21 イスラエルの指導者たちはミツパで、自分の娘をベニヤミン族へは嫁がせないという誓いを立てました。 2 そして、ベテルに集まり、神の前に座して、夕方まで声を上げて泣き悲しんだのです。 3 彼らはイスラエルの神、主に叫びました。「主よ。なぜこんなことが起こったのでしょう。今われわれは一つの部族を失いました。」
4 翌朝、民は早く起き出し、祭壇を築き、焼き尽くすいけにえと和解のいけにえをささげました。 5 そして、彼らは言い始めました。「ミツパで主の前に集まった時、イスラエルの部族で欠席した者はいなかっただろうか。」というのは、その時、「出席を拒む者は必ず殺される」というきびしい誓いを立てていたからです。 6 とにかく全イスラエルにとって、ベニヤミン族を失ったことは、あまりに深い悲しみでした。「ああ、もうベニヤミンはなくなるのだ。なくなってしまうのか。」口を開けば、そのことばかりです。「れっきとしたイスラエルの部族の一つが切り捨てられ、消えていく。 7 あの生き残った一握りの者に、どうやって妻をめとらせたものだろう。われわれは主に、娘をベニヤミン人に嫁がせないと誓ってしまった。」
8-9 その時、ミツパへの集結を拒んだ者を殺すという誓いに、再び思いが及びました。すると、ヤベシュ・ギルアデからは、だれも出ていなかったことがわかりました。 10-12 そこで精兵一万二千を送って、そこの住民を滅ぼすことにしたのです。すべての男子、既婚の女子、子どもらの血が流されました。ただし、適齢期の若い処女だけは助けました。その数は四百人で、全員シロの陣営へ連れて行きました。
13 それから、リモンの岩にこもるベニヤミンの少数の生存者に、和解の使者を送りました。 14 四百人の処女が妻として与えられ、めいめい家に戻りました。ただ、全員に嫁がせるには、四百人では足りません。 15 この時代は、イスラエルにとって悲しみに満ちた時期でした。主がイスラエルの部族の間を引き裂かれたからです。
16 長老たちは思案にくれました。「あの残りの者に妻をめとらせるには、どうしたらいいだろう。ベニヤミンの女は残らず死んでしまっている。 17 しかし、何としても妻をあてがってやらなければ、イスラエルの一つの部族が永遠に絶えてしまう。 18 かといって、われわれの娘を与えるわけにはいかない。厳粛な誓いを立てた以上、破った者は神からのろわれるからだ。」
19 その時、突然だれかが、毎年シロの畑で催される祭りのことを思いついたのです。シロの町は、レボナとベテルとの間、ベテルからシェケムへ至る道の東側にありました。 20 そこで長老たちは、妻を求めているベニヤミンの男たちにこう指示しました。「さあ、行って、ぶどう畑に隠れていなさい。 21 シロの娘たちが踊りに出て来たら、飛び出して、めいめい娘をさらって連れ帰り、妻にしなさい。 22 娘の父親や兄弟が私たちに抗議してきたら、こう言おう。『どうか、わかってくれ。われわれに免じて、娘さんをベニヤミンの男たちに嫁がせてやってくれ。ヤベシュ・ギルアデを滅ぼしても、彼ら全員に妻をもたせてやれなかった。こうでもしなければ、あなたがたが罪を犯さず、娘さんを彼らに与えることはできないわけだから。』」
23 ベニヤミンの男たちは、言われたとおりにしました。祭りに出て来た娘をさらって領地に連れ帰ったのです。彼らは町を再建して定住しました。 24 こうしてイスラエルの民は、それぞれの相続地へと戻りました。
25 当時のイスラエルには王がなく、各人が正しいと思うことを思うままに行っていました。

A Levite and His Concubine
19 In those days Israel had no king.
Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim(A) took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.(B) 2 But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her parents’ home in Bethlehem, Judah. After she had been there four months, 3 her husband went to her to persuade her to return. He had with him his servant and two donkeys. She took him into her parents’ home, and when her father saw him, he gladly welcomed him. 4 His father-in-law, the woman’s father, prevailed on him to stay; so he remained with him three days, eating and drinking,(C) and sleeping there.
5 On the fourth day they got up early and he prepared to leave, but the woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh yourself(D) with something to eat; then you can go.” 6 So the two of them sat down to eat and drink together. Afterward the woman’s father said, “Please stay tonight and enjoy yourself.(E)” 7 And when the man got up to go, his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed there that night. 8 On the morning of the fifth day, when he rose to go, the woman’s father said, “Refresh yourself. Wait till afternoon!” So the two of them ate together.
9 Then when the man, with his concubine and his servant, got up to leave, his father-in-law, the woman’s father, said, “Now look, it’s almost evening. Spend the night here; the day is nearly over. Stay and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow morning you can get up and be on your way home.” 10 But, unwilling to stay another night, the man left and went toward Jebus(F) (that is, Jerusalem), with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine.
11 When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Come, let’s stop at this city of the Jebusites(G) and spend the night.”
12 His master replied, “No. We won’t go into any city whose people are not Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah.” 13 He added, “Come, let’s try to reach Gibeah or Ramah(H) and spend the night in one of those places.” 14 So they went on, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin.(I) 15 There they stopped to spend the night.(J) They went and sat in the city square,(K) but no one took them in for the night.
16 That evening(L) an old man from the hill country of Ephraim,(M) who was living in Gibeah (the inhabitants of the place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the fields. 17 When he looked and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”(N)
18 He answered, “We are on our way from Bethlehem in Judah to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim where I live. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going to the house of the Lord.[a](O) No one has taken me in for the night. 19 We have both straw and fodder(P) for our donkeys(Q) and bread and wine(R) for ourselves your servants—me, the woman and the young man with us. We don’t need anything.”
20 “You are welcome at my house,” the old man said. “Let me supply whatever you need. Only don’t spend the night in the square.” 21 So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink.(S)
22 While they were enjoying themselves,(T) some of the wicked men(U) of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.(V)”
23 The owner of the house went outside(W) and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing.(X) 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter,(Y) and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But as for this man, don’t do such an outrageous thing.”
25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her(Z) and abused her(AA) throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. 26 At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.
27 When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. 28 He said to her, “Get up; let’s go.” But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.
29 When he reached home, he took a knife(AB) and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.(AC) 30 Everyone who saw it was saying to one another, “Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt.(AD) Just imagine! We must do something! So speak up!(AE)”
The Israelites Punish the Benjamites
20 Then all Israel(AF) from Dan to Beersheba(AG) and from the land of Gilead came together as one(AH) and assembled(AI) before the Lord in Mizpah.(AJ) 2 The leaders of all the people of the tribes of Israel took their places in the assembly of God’s people, four hundred thousand men(AK) armed with swords. 3 (The Benjamites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah.) Then the Israelites said, “Tell us how this awful thing happened.”
4 So the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, said, “I and my concubine came to Gibeah(AL) in Benjamin to spend the night.(AM) 5 During the night the men of Gibeah came after me and surrounded the house, intending to kill me.(AN) They raped my concubine, and she died.(AO) 6 I took my concubine, cut her into pieces and sent one piece to each region of Israel’s inheritance,(AP) because they committed this lewd and outrageous act(AQ) in Israel. 7 Now, all you Israelites, speak up and tell me what you have decided to do.(AR)”
8 All the men rose up together as one, saying, “None of us will go home. No, not one of us will return to his house. 9 But now this is what we’ll do to Gibeah: We’ll go up against it in the order decided by casting lots.(AS) 10 We’ll take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred from a thousand, and a thousand from ten thousand, to get provisions for the army. Then, when the army arrives at Gibeah[b] in Benjamin, it can give them what they deserve for this outrageous act done in Israel.” 11 So all the Israelites got together and united as one against the city.(AT)
12 The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What about this awful crime that was committed among you?(AU) 13 Now turn those wicked men(AV) of Gibeah over to us so that we may put them to death and purge the evil from Israel.(AW)”
But the Benjamites would not listen to their fellow Israelites. 14 From their towns they came together at Gibeah to fight against the Israelites. 15 At once the Benjamites mobilized twenty-six thousand swordsmen from their towns, in addition to seven hundred able young men from those living in Gibeah. 16 Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred select troops who were left-handed,(AX) each of whom could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.
17 Israel, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen, all of them fit for battle.
18 The Israelites went up to Bethel[c](AY) and inquired of God.(AZ) They said, “Who of us is to go up first(BA) to fight(BB) against the Benjamites?”
The Lord replied, “Judah(BC) shall go first.”
19 The next morning the Israelites got up and pitched camp near Gibeah. 20 The Israelites went out to fight the Benjamites and took up battle positions against them at Gibeah. 21 The Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down twenty-two thousand Israelites(BD) on the battlefield that day. 22 But the Israelites encouraged one another and again took up their positions where they had stationed themselves the first day. 23 The Israelites went up and wept before the Lord(BE) until evening,(BF) and they inquired of the Lord.(BG) They said, “Shall we go up again to fight(BH) against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites?”
The Lord answered, “Go up against them.”
24 Then the Israelites drew near to Benjamin the second day. 25 This time, when the Benjamites came out from Gibeah to oppose them, they cut down another eighteen thousand Israelites,(BI) all of them armed with swords.
26 Then all the Israelites, the whole army, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the Lord.(BJ) They fasted(BK) that day until evening and presented burnt offerings(BL) and fellowship offerings(BM) to the Lord.(BN) 27 And the Israelites inquired of the Lord.(BO) (In those days the ark of the covenant of God(BP) was there, 28 with Phinehas son of Eleazar,(BQ) the son of Aaron, ministering before it.)(BR) They asked, “Shall we go up again to fight against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites, or not?”
The Lord responded, “Go, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands.(BS)”
29 Then Israel set an ambush(BT) around Gibeah. 30 They went up against the Benjamites on the third day and took up positions against Gibeah as they had done before. 31 The Benjamites came out to meet them and were drawn away(BU) from the city. They began to inflict casualties on the Israelites as before, so that about thirty men fell in the open field and on the roads—the one leading to Bethel(BV) and the other to Gibeah. 32 While the Benjamites were saying, “We are defeating them as before,”(BW) the Israelites were saying, “Let’s retreat and draw them away from the city to the roads.”
33 All the men of Israel moved from their places and took up positions at Baal Tamar, and the Israelite ambush charged out of its place(BX) on the west[d] of Gibeah.[e] 34 Then ten thousand of Israel’s able young men made a frontal attack on Gibeah. The fighting was so heavy that the Benjamites did not realize(BY) how near disaster was.(BZ) 35 The Lord defeated Benjamin(CA) before Israel, and on that day the Israelites struck down 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords. 36 Then the Benjamites saw that they were beaten.
Now the men of Israel had given way(CB) before Benjamin, because they relied on the ambush(CC) they had set near Gibeah. 37 Those who had been in ambush made a sudden dash into Gibeah, spread out and put the whole city to the sword.(CD) 38 The Israelites had arranged with the ambush that they should send up a great cloud of smoke(CE) from the city,(CF) 39 and then the Israelites would counterattack.
The Benjamites had begun to inflict casualties on the Israelites (about thirty), and they said, “We are defeating them as in the first battle.”(CG) 40 But when the column of smoke began to rise from the city, the Benjamites turned and saw the whole city going up in smoke.(CH) 41 Then the Israelites counterattacked,(CI) and the Benjamites were terrified, because they realized that disaster had come(CJ) on them. 42 So they fled before the Israelites in the direction of the wilderness, but they could not escape the battle. And the Israelites who came out of the towns cut them down there. 43 They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them and easily[f] overran them in the vicinity of Gibeah on the east. 44 Eighteen thousand Benjamites fell, all of them valiant fighters.(CK) 45 As they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon,(CL) the Israelites cut down five thousand men along the roads. They kept pressing after the Benjamites as far as Gidom and struck down two thousand more.
46 On that day twenty-five thousand Benjamite(CM) swordsmen fell, all of them valiant fighters. 47 But six hundred of them turned and fled into the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, where they stayed four months. 48 The men of Israel went back to Benjamin and put all the towns to the sword, including the animals and everything else they found. All the towns they came across they set on fire.(CN)
Wives for the Benjamites
21 The men of Israel had taken an oath(CO) at Mizpah:(CP) “Not one of us will give(CQ) his daughter in marriage to a Benjamite.”
2 The people went to Bethel,[g] where they sat before God until evening, raising their voices and weeping bitterly. 3 “Lord, God of Israel,” they cried, “why has this happened to Israel? Why should one tribe be missing(CR) from Israel today?”
4 Early the next day the people built an altar and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings.(CS)
5 Then the Israelites asked, “Who from all the tribes of Israel(CT) has failed to assemble before the Lord?” For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who failed to assemble before the Lord at Mizpah was to be put to death.
6 Now the Israelites grieved for the tribe of Benjamin, their fellow Israelites. “Today one tribe is cut off from Israel,” they said. 7 “How can we provide wives for those who are left, since we have taken an oath(CU) by the Lord not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?” 8 Then they asked, “Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to assemble before the Lord at Mizpah?” They discovered that no one from Jabesh Gilead(CV) had come to the camp for the assembly. 9 For when they counted the people, they found that none of the people of Jabesh Gilead were there.
10 So the assembly sent twelve thousand fighting men with instructions to go to Jabesh Gilead and put to the sword those living there, including the women and children. 11 “This is what you are to do,” they said. “Kill every male(CW) and every woman who is not a virgin.(CX)” 12 They found among the people living in Jabesh Gilead four hundred young women who had never slept with a man, and they took them to the camp at Shiloh(CY) in Canaan.
13 Then the whole assembly sent an offer of peace(CZ) to the Benjamites at the rock of Rimmon.(DA) 14 So the Benjamites returned at that time and were given the women of Jabesh Gilead who had been spared. But there were not enough for all of them.
15 The people grieved for Benjamin,(DB) because the Lord had made a gap in the tribes of Israel. 16 And the elders of the assembly said, “With the women of Benjamin destroyed, how shall we provide wives for the men who are left? 17 The Benjamite survivors must have heirs,” they said, “so that a tribe of Israel will not be wiped out.(DC) 18 We can’t give them our daughters as wives, since we Israelites have taken this oath:(DD) ‘Cursed be anyone who gives(DE) a wife to a Benjamite.’ 19 But look, there is the annual festival of the Lord in Shiloh,(DF) which lies north of Bethel(DG), east of the road that goes from Bethel to Shechem,(DH) and south of Lebonah.”
20 So they instructed the Benjamites, saying, “Go and hide in the vineyards 21 and watch. When the young women of Shiloh come out to join in the dancing,(DI) rush from the vineyards and each of you seize one of them to be your wife. Then return to the land of Benjamin. 22 When their fathers or brothers complain to us, we will say to them, ‘Do us the favor of helping them, because we did not get wives for them during the war. You will not be guilty of breaking your oath because you did not give(DJ) your daughters to them.’”
23 So that is what the Benjamites did. While the young women were dancing,(DK) each man caught one and carried her off to be his wife. Then they returned to their inheritance(DL) and rebuilt the towns and settled in them.(DM)
24 At that time the Israelites left that place and went home to their tribes and clans, each to his own inheritance.
25 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.(DN)

4 福音を伝えるという、このすばらしい務めに私たちを任命してくださったのは、神ご自身です。それはあわれみによるのです。ですから、私たちは決して落胆しません。 2 信じさせるために、あれこれたくらむようなまねはしません。だましたりしたくないのです。書かれてもいないことを、聖書の教えであるかのように思わせることもしません。そのような恥ずかしい方法は用いません。語る時には、神の前に立って真実を語ります。私たちを知っている人はみな、このことを認めてくれるはずです。
3 もし私たちの宣べ伝える福音が、だれかの目に隠されているとしたら、永遠の滅びに向かっている人に対してです。 4 それは、この邪悪な世の神であるサタンのしわざです。目隠しをさせて、その人の上に輝いている福音の栄光が見えないようにしているのです。また、まことの神、キリストの栄光に関する私たちの証言を理解できないようにしているのです。
5 私たちは、自分のことを宣伝しているのではありません。主であるキリスト・イエスを宣べ伝えているのです。私たちはただ、イエスが私たちのために成し遂げてくださったことを知ったので、あなたがたに仕える者となっただけです。 6 「闇の中に光が輝け」（創世1・3）と言われた神様が、私たちに、イエス・キリストの御顔に輝いている、神の栄光の輝きを理解させてくださったからです。
永遠に続く喜び
7 このすばらしい宝〔私たちのうちに輝いている光と力〕は、こわれやすい器〔私たちの弱い肉体〕の中に入っています。私たちのうちにある栄光に満ちた力は、神に与えられたものであって、私たち自身から出たものでないことは明らかです。 8 私たちは四方八方から苦しめられ、圧迫されますが、押しつぶされ、打ちのめされることはありません。「どうしてこんなことが」と途方にくれることがあっても、行きづまることはありません。 9 迫害されますが、神に見捨てられることはありません。打ち倒されても、また立ち上がって、前進を続けます。 10 この体は、かつてのイエス様がそうであったように、いつも死に直面しています。ですから、私たちを安全に守ってくださる方は、私たちのうちに生きておられるイエスだけであることが明らかになるのです。 11 まことに私たちは、主に仕えているために、絶えず死の危険にさらされています。しかし、そのことでかえって、死ぬべき私たちの体によって、イエス・キリストのいのちを明らかに示す機会が与えられているのです。 12 私たちはキリストの福音を宣べ伝えているために、死に直面しています。しかしその結果、あなたがたに永遠のいのちが与えられるのです。 13 詩篇の作者は、「私は信じている。それゆえに語る」（116・10）と言いました。同じように私たちも、自分が神の守りの中にあることを確信して、信じていることを大胆に語ります。 14 主イエスを死から復活させてくださった神様が、私たちをもイエスと共に復活させ、あなたがたといっしょに御前に立たせてくださることを信じています。 15 こんな苦しみに甘んじているのも、あなたがたのためを思うからです。キリストに導かれる人が増えれば増えるほど、その大きな恵みがますます多くの人におよんで、感謝に満ちあふれ、主の栄光が明らかになるのです。
16 ですから、私たちは決して落胆しません。肉体はしだいに衰えますが、うちにある力は日ごとに強くなっていきます。 17 今の私たちの苦しみや悩みは、結局のところ、取るに足りないものであり、それほど長くは続きません。そして、このつかの間の苦しみは、永遠に尽きない、あふれるばかりの神の祝福をもたらすのです。 18 ですから私たちは、いま見えるもの、すなわち身の回りの苦しみには目をとめません。むしろ、今は見えない天にある喜びを望み見ているのです。苦しみは、やがて消え去ります。しかし、その喜びは永遠に続くのです。

Present Weakness and Resurrection Life
4 Therefore, since through God’s mercy(A) we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.(B) 2 Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways;(C) we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God.(D) On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience(E) in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel(F) is veiled,(G) it is veiled to those who are perishing.(H) 4 The god(I) of this age(J) has blinded(K) the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ,(L) who is the image of God.(M) 5 For what we preach is not ourselves,(N) but Jesus Christ as Lord,(O) and ourselves as your servants(P) for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”[a](Q) made his light shine in our hearts(R) to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.(S)
7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay(T) to show that this all-surpassing power is from God(U) and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side,(V) but not crushed; perplexed,(W) but not in despair; 9 persecuted,(X) but not abandoned;(Y) struck down, but not destroyed.(Z) 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus,(AA) so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.(AB) 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake,(AC) so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.(AD)
13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.”[b](AE) Since we have that same spirit of[c] faith,(AF) we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead(AG) will also raise us with Jesus(AH) and present us with you to himself.(AI) 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving(AJ) to overflow to the glory of God.
16 Therefore we do not lose heart.(AK) Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly(AL) we are being renewed(AM) day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.(AN) 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen,(AO) since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
