³⁰ And the people of Dan set up the carved image for themselves, and Jonathan the son of Gershom, ^(A)son of Moses,^{[a] (B)}and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day ^(C)of the captivity of the land.

¹⁰ So the Philistines fought, ^(A)and Israel was defeated, ^(B)and they fled, every man to his home. And there was a very great slaughter, for thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell. ^11 (C)And the ark of God was captured, ^(D)and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

² The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle spread, Israel was defeated before the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men on the field of battle. ³ And when the people came to the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord here ^(A)from Shiloh, that it^[a] may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies.”

⁵ And the man Micah had a shrine, and he made ^(A)an ephod and ^(B)household gods, and ^(C)ordained^[a] one of his sons, who became his priest.

³ And he restored the 1,100 pieces of silver to his mother. And his mother said, “I dedicate the silver to the Lord from my hand for my son, to make ^(A)a carved image and ^(B)a metal image. Now therefore I will restore it to you.”

The Birth of Samson

13 And the people of Israel again ^(A)did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord gave them ^(B)into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.

²² She gave birth to a son, and he called his name ^(A)Gershom, for he said, “I have been a ^(B)sojourner^[a] in a foreign land.”
