Israel Fights the Remaining Canaanites^(A)

1 After the death^(B) of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord, “Who of us is to go up first^(C) to fight against the Canaanites?^(D)”

¹⁸ The Israelites went up to Bethel^[a](A) and inquired of God.^(B) They said, “Who of us is to go up first^(C) to fight^(D) against the Benjamites?”

The Lord replied, “Judah^(E) shall go first.”

²¹ He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring^(A) of the Urim^(B) before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”

²⁸ with Phinehas son of Eleazar,^(A) the son of Aaron, ministering before it.)^(B) They asked, “Shall we go up again to fight against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites, or not?”

The Lord responded, “Go, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands.^(C)”

⁹ When David learned that Saul was plotting against him, he said to Abiathar^(A) the priest, “Bring the ephod.^(B)” ¹⁰ David said, “Lord, God of Israel, your servant has heard definitely that Saul plans to come to Keilah and destroy the town on account of me.

⁹ But Doeg^(A) the Edomite, who was standing with Saul’s officials, said, “I saw the son of Jesse come to Ahimelek son of Ahitub^(B) at Nob.^{(C) 10} Ahimelek inquired^(D) of the Lord for him; he also gave him provisions^(E) and the sword^(F) of Goliath the Philistine.”

3 These are the nations the Lord left to test^(A) all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan ² (he did this only to teach warfare to the descendants of the Israelites who had not had previous battle experience): ³ the five^(B) rulers of the Philistines,^(C) all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites^(D) living in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal Hermon^(E) to Lebo Hamath.^{(F) 4} They were left to test^(G) the Israelites to see whether they would obey the Lord’s commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses.

⁵ The Israelites lived^(H) among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites,^(I) Hivites and Jebusites.^{(J) 6} They took their daughters^(K) in marriage and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.^(L)

²⁷ But Manasseh did not^(A) drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor^(B) or Ibleam^(C) or Megiddo^(D) and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites^(E) were determined to live in that land.

²⁹ After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died^(B) at the age of a hundred and ten.^{(C) 30} And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah^[a](D) in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.^(E)
