14 Samson s-a dus la Timna şi a văzut acolo o filisteancă tânără. 2 Când s-a întors, şi-a anunţat tatăl şi mama şi le-a zis:
– Am văzut la Timna o filisteancă. Luaţi-mi-o acum de soţie!
3 Tatăl său şi mama sa i-au zis:
– Oare nu este nici o femeie între rudele tale sau în tot poporul, de umbli să-ţi iei soţie de la filistenii cei necircumcişi?
Dar Samson i-a răspuns tatălui său:
– Pe ea să mi-o luaţi căci ea îmi place!
4 Tatăl său şi mama sa nu ştiau că lucrul acesta era îngăduit de Domnul, căci El căuta un prilej ca să-i provoace pe filisteni. În vremea aceea filistenii stăpâneau peste Israel. 5 Samson s-a dus la Timna împreună cu tatăl său şi cu mama sa. Când a ajuns la viile din Timna, i-a ieşit înainte un leu tânăr răcnind. 6 Duhul Domnului a venit peste Samson şi el a sfâşiat leul cum se sfâşie un ied, fără să aibă nimic în mâini. N-a spus tatălui său şi mamei sale ce făcuse. 7 Apoi s-a dus să vorbească cu femeia şi ea i-a plăcut lui Samson.
8 După o vreme s-a întors să o ia de soţie şi s-a abătut ca să vadă hoitul leului. Şi iată că în hoitul leului era un roi de albine şi miere. 9 A luat un fagure de miere în mână şi a plecat mai departe, mâncând. La întoarcere, când a ajuns la tatăl său şi la mama sa, le-a dat să mănânce şi lor din miere. Dar nu le-a dezvăluit că luase fagurele din hoitul leului. 10 Apoi tatăl lui s-a dus la femeia aceea. Acolo Samson dădea un ospăţ căci aşa obişnuiau tinerii. 11 Când cei de acolo l-au văzut, au invitat treizeci de prieteni ca să fie cu el. 12 Samson le-a zis:
– Am să vă spun o ghicitoare. Dacă mi-o veţi putea explica şi dezlega în cele şapte zile ale ospăţului, vă voi da treizeci de mantale şi treizeci de schimburi de haine. 13 Dar dacă nu veţi fi în stare să mi-o dezlegaţi, atunci voi îmi veţi da treizeci de mantale şi treizeci de schimburi de haine!
Ei i-au răspuns:
– Spune-ne ghicitoarea ca s-o auzim!
14 El le-a zis:
Din cel ce mănâncă a ieşit ce se mănâncă
şi din cel puternic a ieşit dulceaţă!
Timp de trei zile n-au fost în stare să dezlege ghicitoarea.
15 În a patra zi[a], i-au zis soţiei lui Samson: „Momeşte-l pe soţul tău să ne dezlege ghicitoarea, altfel îţi vom da foc atât ţie, cât şi familiei tale! Ne-aţi chemat aici ca să ne jefuiţi, nu-i aşa?“
16 Soţia lui Samson plângea lângă el şi zicea:
– Cu siguranţă tu mă urăşti şi nu mă iubeşti. Ai spus o ghicitoare celor din poporul meu şi mie nici nu mi-ai dezlegat-o!
El i-a răspuns:
– Din moment ce nu am dezlegat-o nici tatălui meu, nici mamei mele, cum să ţi-o dezleg ţie?
17 Însă ea a plâns lângă el în toate cele şapte zile cât a ţinut ospăţul. Când au ajuns în ziua a şaptea, el i-a dezlegat-o pentru că îl necăjea necontenit. Apoi ea le-a dezlegat ghicitoarea celor din poporul ei. 18 În ziua a şaptea, înainte de apusul soarelui, oamenii din cetate i-au zis:
– Ce este mai dulce decât mierea şi ce este mai puternic decât leul?
– Dacă n-aţi fi arat cu viţeaua mea, nu mi-aţi fi dezlegat ghicitoarea, le-a răspuns el.
19 Duhul Domnului a venit de îndată peste el şi s-a dus la Aşchelon. A ucis treizeci din oamenii lor şi le-a luat îmbrăcămintea. Apoi a dat schimburile de haine celor ce dezlegaseră ghicitoarea şi, aprins de mânie, s-a întors în casa tatălui său. 20 Soţia lui Samson a fost dată unuia din prietenii lui, chiar celui mai bun dintre ei[b].

Samson's Marriage
14 (A)Samson went down to (B)Timnah, and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 Then he came up and told his father and mother, “I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah. (C)Now get her for me as my wife.” 3 But his father and mother said to him, “Is there not a woman among the daughters (D)of your relatives, or among all our people, that you must go to take a wife from the (E)uncircumcised Philistines?” But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes.”
4 His father and mother did not know that it was (F)from the Lord, for he was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines. (G)At that time the Philistines ruled over Israel.
5 Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, and they came to the vineyards of Timnah. And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring. 6 (H)Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. 7 Then he went down and talked with the woman, and she was right in Samson's eyes.
8 After some days he returned to take her. And he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion, and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey. 9 He scraped it out into his hands and went on, eating as he went. And he came to his father and mother and gave some to them, and they ate. But he did not tell them that he had scraped the honey from the carcass of the lion.
10 His father went down to the woman, and Samson prepared a feast there, for so the young men used to do. 11 As soon as the people saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him. 12 And Samson said to them, (I)“Let me now put a riddle to you. If you can tell me what it is, within (J)the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty (K)changes of clothes, 13 but if you cannot tell me what it is, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes.” And they said to him, “Put your riddle, that we may hear it.” 14 And he said to them,
“Out of the eater came something to eat.
Out of the strong came something sweet.”
And in three days they could not solve the riddle.
15 On the fourth[a] day they said to Samson's wife, (L)“Entice your husband to tell us what the riddle is, (M)lest we burn you and your father's house with fire. Have you invited us here to impoverish us?” 16 And Samson's wife wept over him and said, (N)“You only hate me; you do not love me. You have put a riddle to my people, and you have not told me what it is.” And he said to her, “Behold, I have not told my father nor my mother, and shall I tell you?” 17 She wept before him the seven days that their feast lasted, and on the seventh day he told her, because (O)she pressed him hard. Then she told the riddle to her people. 18 And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down,
“What is sweeter than honey?
What is stronger than a lion?”
And he said to them,
“If you had not plowed with my heifer,
you would not have found out my riddle.”
19 (P)And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and he went down to (Q)Ashkelon and struck down thirty men of the town and took their spoil and gave the garments to those who had told the riddle. In hot anger he went back to his father's house. 20 And Samson's wife was given to (R)his companion, (S)who had been his best man.

Samson’s Philistine Wife
14 Now Samson went down (A)to Timnah, and (B)saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 So he went up and told his father and mother, saying, “I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore, (C)get her for me as a wife.”
3 Then his father and mother said to him, “Is there no woman among the daughters of (D)your brethren, or among all my people, that you must go and get a wife from the (E)uncircumcised Philistines?”
And Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for [a]she pleases me well.”
4 But his father and mother did not know that it was (F)of the Lord—that He was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines. For at that time (G)the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
5 So Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah.
Now to his surprise, a young lion came roaring against him. 6 And (H)the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.
7 Then he went down and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well. 8 After some time, when he returned to get her, he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion. And behold, a swarm of bees and honey were in the carcass of the lion. 9 He took some of it in his hands and went along, eating. When he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them, and they also ate. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey out of the (I)carcass of the lion.
10 So his father went down to the woman. And Samson gave a feast there, for young men used to do so. 11 And it happened, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
12 Then Samson said to them, “Let me (J)pose a riddle to you. If you can correctly solve and explain it to me (K)within the seven days of the feast, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty (L)changes of clothing. 13 But if you cannot explain it to me, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing.”
And they said to him, (M)“Pose your riddle, that we may hear it.”
14 So he said to them:
“Out of the eater came something to eat,
And out of the strong came something sweet.”
Now for three days they could not explain the riddle.
15 But it came to pass on the [b]seventh day that they said to Samson’s wife, (N)“Entice your husband, that he may explain the riddle to us, (O)or else we will burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you invited us in order to take what is ours? Is that not so?”
16 Then Samson’s wife wept on him, and said, (P)“You only hate me! You do not love me! You have posed a riddle to the sons of my people, but you have not explained it to me.”
And he said to her, “Look, I have not explained it to my father or my mother; so should I explain it to you?” 17 Now she had wept on him the seven days while their feast lasted. And it happened on the seventh day that he told her, because she pressed him so much. Then she explained the riddle to the sons of her people. 18 So the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down:
“What is sweeter than honey?
And what is stronger than a lion?”
And he said to them:
“If you had not plowed with my heifer,
You would not have solved my riddle!”
19 Then (Q)the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave the changes of clothing to those who had explained the riddle. So his anger was aroused, and he went back up to his father’s house. 20 And Samson’s wife (R)was given to his companion, who had been (S)his best man.
