Jesús y la samaritana
4 Jesús[a] se enteró de que los fariseos sabían que él estaba ganando y bautizando más discípulos que Juan 2 (aunque en realidad no era Jesús quien bautizaba, sino sus discípulos). 3 Por eso se fue de Judea y volvió otra vez a Galilea. 4 Como tenía que pasar por Samaria, 5 llegó a un pueblo samaritano llamado Sicar, cerca del terreno que Jacob había dado a su hijo José. 6 Allí estaba el pozo de Jacob. Jesús, fatigado del camino, se sentó junto al pozo. Era cerca del mediodía.[b] 7 En eso, una mujer de Samaria llegó a sacar agua y Jesús le dijo:
—Dame un poco de agua.
8 Sus discípulos habían ido al pueblo a comprar comida.
9 Entonces, como los judíos no se relacionaban con los samaritanos, la mujer respondió:
—¿Cómo se te ocurre pedirme agua, si tú eres judío y yo soy samaritana?
10 Jesús contestó:
—Si supieras lo que Dios puede dar y conocieras al que te está pidiendo agua —contestó Jesús—, tú le habrías pedido a él y él te habría dado agua viva.
11 La mujer dijo:
—Señor, ni siquiera tienes con qué sacar agua y el pozo es muy hondo; ¿de dónde, pues, vas a sacar esa agua viva? 12 ¿Acaso eres tú superior a nuestro padre Jacob que nos dejó este pozo, del cual bebieron él, sus hijos y su ganado?
13 —Todo el que beba de esta agua volverá a tener sed —respondió Jesús—, 14 pero el que beba del agua que yo le daré no volverá a tener sed jamás, sino que dentro de él esa agua se convertirá en un manantial del que brotará vida eterna.
15 —Señor —dijo la mujer—, dame de esa agua para que no vuelva a tener sed ni siga viniendo aquí a sacarla.
16 —Ve a llamar a tu esposo y vuelve acá —dijo Jesús.
17 —No tengo esposo —respondió ella.
Jesús le dijo:
—Bien has dicho que no tienes esposo. 18 Es cierto que has tenido cinco y el que ahora tienes no es tu esposo. En esto has dicho la verdad.
19 La mujer dijo:
—Señor, me doy cuenta de que tú eres profeta. 20 Nuestros antepasados adoraron en este monte, pero ustedes los judíos dicen que el lugar donde debemos adorar está en Jerusalén.
21 Jesús contestó:
—Créeme, mujer, que se acerca la hora en que ni en este monte ni en Jerusalén adorarán ustedes al Padre. 22 Ahora ustedes adoran lo que no conocen; nosotros adoramos lo que conocemos, porque la salvación proviene de los judíos. 23 Pero se acerca la hora, y ha llegado ya, en que los verdaderos adoradores rendirán culto al Padre en espíritu y en verdad,[c] porque así quiere el Padre que sean los que le adoren. 24 Dios es espíritu y quienes lo adoran deben hacerlo en espíritu y en verdad.
25 —Sé que viene el Mesías, al que llaman el Cristo —respondió la mujer—. Cuando él venga nos explicará todas las cosas.
26 —Ese soy yo, el que habla contigo —le dijo Jesús.
Los discípulos vuelven a reunirse con Jesús
27 En esto llegaron sus discípulos y se sorprendieron de verlo hablando con una mujer, aunque ninguno preguntó: «¿Qué pretendes?», o: «¿De qué hablas con ella?».
28 La mujer dejó su cántaro, volvió al pueblo y decía a la gente:
29 —Vengan a ver a un hombre que me ha dicho todo lo que he hecho. ¿No será este el Cristo?
30 Salieron del pueblo y fueron a ver a Jesús. 31 Mientras tanto, sus discípulos le insistían:
—Rabí, come algo.
32 —Yo tengo un alimento que ustedes no conocen —respondió él.
33 «¿Le habrán traído algo de comer?», comentaban entre sí los discípulos.
34 —Mi alimento es hacer la voluntad del que me envió y terminar su obra —dijo Jesús—. 35 ¿No dicen ustedes: “Todavía faltan cuatro meses para la cosecha”? Yo les digo: ¡Abran los ojos y miren los campos sembrados! Ya la cosecha está madura; 36 ya mismo el segador recibe su salario y recoge el fruto para vida eterna. Ahora, tanto el sembrador como el segador se alegran juntos. 37 Porque como ciertamente dice el refrán: “Uno es el que siembra y otro el que cosecha”. 38 Yo los he enviado a ustedes a cosechar lo que no les costó ningún trabajo. Otros se han fatigado trabajando y ustedes han cosechado el fruto de ese trabajo.
39 Muchos de los samaritanos que vivían en aquel pueblo creyeron en él por el testimonio que daba la mujer: «Me ha dicho todo lo que he hecho». 40 Así que cuando los samaritanos fueron a su encuentro le insistieron en que se quedara con ellos. Jesús permaneció allí dos días 41 y muchos más llegaron a creer por lo que él mismo decía.
42 —Ya no creemos solo por lo que tú dijiste —decían a la mujer—; ahora lo hemos oído nosotros mismos y sabemos que verdaderamente este es el Salvador del mundo.
Jesús sana al hijo de un funcionario
43 Después de esos dos días Jesús salió de allí rumbo a Galilea 44 (pues, como él mismo había dicho, a ningún profeta se le honra en su propia tierra). 45 Cuando llegó a Galilea, fue bien recibido por los galileos, pues estos habían visto personalmente todo lo que había hecho en Jerusalén durante la fiesta de la Pascua, ya que ellos habían estado también allí.
46 Y volvió otra vez Jesús a Caná de Galilea, donde había convertido el agua en vino. Había allí un funcionario real, cuyo hijo estaba enfermo en Capernaúm. 47 Cuando este hombre se enteró de que Jesús había llegado de Judea a Galilea, fue a su encuentro y le suplicó que bajara a sanar a su hijo, pues estaba a punto de morir.
48 —Ustedes nunca van a creer si no ven señales y prodigios —le dijo Jesús.
49 —Señor —rogó el funcionario—, baja antes de que se muera mi hijo.
50 —Vuelve a casa que tu hijo vive —dijo Jesús.
El hombre creyó lo que Jesús dijo y se fue. 51 Cuando se dirigía a su casa, sus siervos salieron a su encuentro y le dieron la noticia de que su hijo estaba vivo. 52 Cuando preguntó a qué hora había comenzado su hijo a sentirse mejor, contestaron:
—Ayer a la una de la tarde[d] se le quitó la fiebre.
53 Entonces el padre se dio cuenta de que precisamente a esa hora Jesús le había dicho: «Tu hijo vive». Así que él y toda su familia creyeron.
54 Esta fue la segunda señal milagrosa que Jesús hizo después de que volvió de Judea a Galilea.

Jesús y la mujer samaritana
4 Cuando, pues, el Señor supo que los fariseos habían oído decir: «Jesús hace y bautiza más discípulos que Juan» 2 (aunque Jesús no bautizaba, sino sus discípulos), 3 salió de Judea y se fue otra vez a Galilea. 4 Y le era necesario pasar por Samaria. 5 Fue, pues, a una ciudad de Samaria llamada Sicar, junto a la heredad que Jacob dio a su hijo José. 6 Y estaba allí el pozo de Jacob. Entonces Jesús, cansado del viaje, se sentó junto al pozo. Era como la hora sexta.
7 Llegó una mujer de Samaria a sacar agua; y Jesús le dijo:
—Dame de beber 8 —pues sus discípulos habían ido a la ciudad a comprar alimentos—.
9 La mujer samaritana le dijo:
—¿Cómo tú, siendo judío, me pides a mí de beber, que soy mujer samaritana? —porque judíos y samaritanos no se tratan entre sí—.
10 Respondió Jesús y le dijo:
—Si conocieras el don de Dios, y quién es el que te dice: “Dame de beber”, tú le pedirías, y él te daría agua viva.
11 La mujer le dijo:
—Señor, no tienes con qué sacarla, y el pozo es hondo. ¿De dónde, pues, tienes el agua viva? 12 ¿Acaso eres tú mayor que nuestro padre Jacob, que nos dio este pozo, del cual bebieron él, sus hijos y sus ganados?
13 Jesús le contestó:
—Cualquiera que beba de esta agua volverá a tener sed; 14 pero el que beba del agua que yo le daré no tendrá sed jamás, sino que el agua que yo le daré será en él una fuente de agua que salte para vida eterna.
15 La mujer le dijo:
—Señor, dame esa agua, para que no tenga yo sed ni venga aquí a sacarla.
16 Jesús le dijo:
—Ve, llama a tu marido, y ven acá.
17 Respondió la mujer y dijo:
—No tengo marido.
Jesús le dijo:
—Bien has dicho: “No tengo marido”, 18 porque cinco maridos has tenido y el que ahora tienes no es tu marido. Esto has dicho con verdad.
19 Le dijo la mujer:
—Señor, me parece que tú eres profeta. 20 Nuestros padres adoraron en este monte, pero vosotros decís que en Jerusalén es el lugar donde se debe adorar.
21 Jesús le dijo:
—Mujer, créeme que la hora viene cuando ni en este monte ni en Jerusalén adoraréis al Padre. 22 Vosotros adoráis lo que no sabéis; nosotros adoramos lo que sabemos, porque la salvación viene de los judíos. 23 Pero la hora viene, y ahora es, cuando los verdaderos adoradores adorarán al Padre en espíritu y en verdad, porque también el Padre tales adoradores busca que lo adoren. 24 Dios es Espíritu, y los que lo adoran, en espíritu y en verdad es necesario que lo adoren.
25 Le dijo la mujer:
—Sé que ha de venir el Mesías, llamado el Cristo; cuando él venga nos declarará todas las cosas.
26 Jesús le dijo:
—Yo soy, el que habla contigo.
27 En esto llegaron sus discípulos y se asombraron de que hablara con una mujer; sin embargo, ninguno dijo: «¿Qué preguntas?» o «¿Qué hablas con ella?» 28 Entonces la mujer dejó su cántaro, fue a la ciudad y dijo a los hombres:
29 —Venid, ved a un hombre que me ha dicho todo cuanto he hecho. ¿No será éste el Cristo?
30 Entonces salieron de la ciudad y vinieron a él.
31 Entre tanto, los discípulos le rogaban, diciendo:
—Rabí, come.
32 Él les dijo:
—Yo tengo una comida que comer, que vosotros no sabéis.
33 Entonces los discípulos se decían entre sí:
—¿Le habrá traído alguien de comer?
34 Jesús les dijo:
—Mi comida es que haga la voluntad del que me envió y que acabe su obra. 35 ¿No decís vosotros: “Aún faltan cuatro meses para que llegue la siega”? Yo os digo: Alzad vuestros ojos y mirad los campos, porque ya están blancos para la siega. 36 Y el que siega recibe salario y recoge fruto para vida eterna, para que el que siembra se goce juntamente con el que siega. 37 En esto es verdadero el dicho: “Uno es el que siembra y otro es el que siega.” 38 Yo os he enviado a segar lo que vosotros no labrasteis; otros labraron y vosotros habéis entrado en sus labores.
39 Muchos de los samaritanos de aquella ciudad creyeron en él por la palabra de la mujer, que daba testimonio diciendo: «Me dijo todo lo que he hecho.» 40 Entonces vinieron los samaritanos a él y le rogaron que se quedara con ellos, y se quedó allí dos días. 41 Muchos más creyeron por la palabra de él, 42 y decían a la mujer:
«Ya no creemos solamente por lo que has dicho, pues nosotros mismos hemos oído y sabemos que verdaderamente éste es el Salvador del mundo, el Cristo.»
Jesús sana al hijo de un noble
43 Dos días después salió de allí y fue a Galilea, 44 pues Jesús mismo dio testimonio de que al profeta no se le honra en su propia tierra. 45 Cuando llegó a Galilea, los galileos lo recibieron, pues habían visto todas las cosas que había hecho en Jerusalén, en la fiesta, porque también ellos habían ido a la fiesta.
46 Fue, pues, Jesús otra vez a Caná de Galilea, donde había convertido el agua en vino. Había en Capernaúm un oficial del rey, cuyo hijo estaba enfermo. 47 Cuando oyó aquel que Jesús había llegado de Judea a Galilea, fue a él y le rogó que descendiera y sanara a su hijo, que estaba a punto de morir. 48 Entonces Jesús le dijo:
—Si no veis señales y prodigios, no creeréis.
49 El oficial del rey le dijo:
—Señor, desciende antes que mi hijo muera.
50 Jesús le dijo:
—Vete, tu hijo vive.
El hombre creyó la palabra que Jesús le dijo, y se fue. 51 Cuando ya él descendía, sus siervos salieron a recibirlo, y le informaron diciendo:
—Tu hijo vive.
52 Entonces él les preguntó a qué hora había comenzado a mejorar. Le dijeron:
—Ayer, a la hora séptima, se le pasó la fiebre.
53 El padre entonces entendió que aquélla era la hora en que Jesús le había dicho: «Tu hijo vive.» Y creyó él con toda su casa. 54 Esta segunda señal hizo Jesús cuando fue de Judea a Galilea.

3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
41 And many more believed because of his own word;
42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
43 Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.
48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.
52 Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.

Jesus Talks to a Woman in Samaria
4 Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard the report that he was making and baptizing more followers than John. 2 (But really, Jesus himself did not baptize anyone; his followers baptized people for him.) 3 So he left Judea and went back to Galilee. 4 On the way to Galilee, he had to go through the country of Samaria.
5 In Samaria Jesus came to the town called Sychar, which is near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there. Jesus was tired from his long trip, so he sat down beside the well. It was about noon. 7 A Samaritan woman came to the well to get some water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” 8 This happened while his followers were in town buying some food.
9 The woman answered, “I am surprised that you ask me for a drink! You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman!” (Jews have nothing to do with Samaritans.[a])
10 Jesus answered, “You don’t know what God can give you. And you don’t know who I am, the one who asked you for a drink. If you knew, you would have asked me, and I would have given you living water.”
11 The woman said, “Sir, where will you get that living water? The well is very deep, and you have nothing to get water with. 12 Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob? He is the one who gave us this well. He drank from it himself, and his sons and all his animals drank from it too.”
13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. 14 But anyone who drinks the water I give will never be thirsty again. The water I give people will be like a spring flowing inside them. It will bring them eternal life.”
15 The woman said to Jesus, “Sir, give me this water. Then I will never be thirsty again and won’t have to come back here to get more water.”
16 Jesus told her, “Go get your husband and come back.”
17 The woman answered, “But I have no husband.”
Jesus said to her, “You are right to say you have no husband. 18 That’s because, although you have had five husbands, the man you live with now is not your husband. That much was the truth.”
19 The woman said, “Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.[b] 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain. But you Jews say that Jerusalem is the place where people must worship.”
21 Jesus said, “Believe me, woman! The time is coming when you will not have to be in Jerusalem or on this mountain to worship the Father. 22 You Samaritans worship something you don’t understand. We Jews understand what we worship, since salvation comes from the Jews. 23 But the time is coming when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. In fact, that time is now here. And these are the kind of people the Father wants to be his worshipers. 24 God is spirit. So the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
25 The woman said, “I know that the Messiah is coming.” (He is the one called Christ.) “When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus said, “He is talking to you now—I am the Messiah.”
27 Just then Jesus’ followers came back from town. They were surprised because they saw Jesus talking with a woman. But none of them asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28 Then the woman left her water jar and went back to town. She told the people there, 29 “A man told me everything I have ever done. Come see him. Maybe he is the Messiah.” 30 So the people left the town and went to see Jesus.
31 While the woman was in town, Jesus’ followers were begging him, “Teacher, eat something!”
32 But Jesus answered, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
33 So the followers asked themselves, “Did someone already bring him some food?”
34 Jesus said, “My food is to do what the one who sent me wants me to do. My food is to finish the work that he gave me to do. 35 When you plant, you always say, ‘Four more months to wait before we gather the grain.’ But I tell you, open your eyes, and look at the fields. They are ready for harvesting now. 36 Even now, the people who harvest the crop are being paid. They are gathering crops for eternal life. So now the people who plant can be happy together with those who harvest. 37 It is true when we say, ‘One person plants, but another person harvests the crop.’ 38 I sent you to harvest a crop that you did not work for. Others did the work, and you get the profit from their work.”
39 Many of the Samaritan people in that town believed in Jesus. They believed because of what the woman had told them about him. She had told them, “He told me everything I have ever done.” 40 The Samaritans went to Jesus. They begged him to stay with them. So he stayed there two days. 41 Many more people became believers because of the things he said.
42 The people said to the woman, “First we believed in Jesus because of what you told us. But now we believe because we heard him ourselves. We know now that he really is the one who will save the world.”
Jesus Heals an Official’s Son(A)
43 Two days later Jesus left and went to Galilee. 44 (Jesus had said before that a prophet is not respected in his own country.) 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the people there welcomed him. They had been at the Passover festival in Jerusalem and had seen everything he did there.
46 Jesus went to visit Cana in Galilee again. Cana is where he had changed the water into wine. One of the king’s important officials lived in the city of Capernaum. This man’s son was sick. 47 The man heard that Jesus had come from Judea and was now in Galilee. So he went to Jesus and begged him to come to Capernaum and heal his son, who was almost dead. 48 Jesus said to him, “You people must see miraculous signs and wonders before you will believe in me.”
49 The king’s official said, “Sir, come before my little son dies.”
50 Jesus answered, “Go. Your son will live.”
The man believed what Jesus told him and went home. 51 On the way home, the man’s servants came and met him. They said, “Your son is well.”
52 The man asked, “What time did my son begin to get well?”
They answered, “It was about one o’clock yesterday when the fever left him.”
53 The father knew that one o’clock was the same time that Jesus had said, “Your son will live.” So the man and everyone in his house believed in Jesus.
54 That was the second miraculous sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.
