16 (A)Ang mga bagay na ito'y aking sinalita sa inyo, (B)upang kayo'y huwag mangatisod.
2 Kayo'y palalayasin nila sa mga sinagoga: (C)oo, dumarating ang oras, (D)na ang sinomang pumatay sa inyo ay aakalaing naghahandog siya ng paglilingkod sa Dios.
3 At ang mga bagay na ito'y gagawin nila, sapagka't hindi nila nakikilala ang Ama, ni ako man.
4 Datapuwa't ang mga bagay na ito'y sinalita ko sa inyo, upang kung dumating ang kanilang oras, ay inyong mangaalaala, kung paanong sinabi ko sa inyo. At ang mga bagay na ito'y hindi ko sinabi sa inyo buhat pa nang una, sapagka't ako'y sumasa inyo.
5 Datapuwa't ngayong (E)ako'y paroroon sa nagsugo sa akin; at (F)sinoman sa inyo ay walang nagtatanong sa akin, Saan ka paroroon?
6 Nguni't sapagka't sinalita ko ang mga bagay na ito sa inyo, ay napuno (G)ng kalumbayan ang inyong puso.
7 Gayon ma'y sinasalita ko sa inyo ang katotohanan: Nararapat sa inyo na ako'y yumaon; sapagka't kung hindi ako yayaon, (H)ang Mangaaliw ay hindi paririto sa inyo; nguni't kung ako'y yumaon, siya'y susuguin ko sa inyo.
8 At siya, pagparito niya, ay kaniyang susumbatan ang sanglibutan tungkol sa kasalanan, at sa katuwiran, at sa paghatol:
9 (I)Tungkol sa kasalanan, sapagka't hindi sila nagsisampalataya sa akin;
10 (J)Tungkol sa katuwiran, sapagka't ako'y paroroon sa Ama, at hindi na ninyo ako makikita;
11 Tungkol sa paghatol, (K)sapagka't ang prinsipe ng sanglibutang ito ay hinatulan na.
12 Mayroon pa akong maraming bagay na sa inyo ay sasabihin, (L)nguni't ngayon ay hindi ninyo mangatitiis.
13 Gayon ma'y kung siya, ang (M)Espiritu ng katotohanan ay dumating, (N)ay papatnubayan niya kayo sa buong katotohanan: sapagka't hindi siya magsasalita ng mula sa kaniyang sarili; kundi ang anomang bagay na kaniyang marinig, ang mga ito ang kaniyang sasalitain: at kaniyang ipahahayag sa inyo ang mga bagay na magsisidating.
14 Luluwalhatiin niya ako: sapagka't kukuha siya sa nasa akin, at sa inyo'y ipahahayag.
15 Ang lahat ng mga bagay na nasa Ama (O)ay akin: kaya sinabi ko, na siya'y kukuha sa nasa akin, at sa inyo'y ipahahayag.
16 Sangdali na lamang, (P)at ako'y hindi na ninyo makikita; at muling sandali pa, at ako'y inyong makikita.
17 Ang ilan sa kaniyang mga alagad nga ay nangagsangusapan, Ano itong sinasabi niya sa atin, Sangdali na lamang, at ako'y hindi na ninyo makikita; at muling sangdali pa, at ako'y inyong makikita: at, Sapagka't ako'y paroroon sa Ama?
18 Sinabi nga nila, Ano nga itong sinasabi niya, Sangdali na lamang? Hindi namin nalalaman kung ano ang sinasabi niya.
19 Natalastas ni Jesus na sa kaniya'y ibig nilang itanong, at sa kanila'y sinabi niya, Nangagtatanungan kayo tungkol dito sa aking sinabi, Sangdali na lamang, at ako'y hindi na ninyo makikita, at muling sangdali pa, at ako'y inyong makikita?
20 Katotohanan, katotohanang sinasabi ko sa inyo, na kayo'y magsisiiyak at magsisipanaghoy, datapuwa't ang sanglibutan ay magagalak: kayo'y mangalulumbay, datapuwa't (Q)ang inyong kalumbayan ay magiging kagalakan.
21 Ang babae pagka nanganganak (R)ay nalulumbay, sapagka't dumating ang kaniyang oras: nguni't pagkapanganak niya sa sanggol, ay hindi na niya naalaala ang hirap dahil sa kagalakan sa pagkapanganak sa isang tao sa sanglibutan.
22 At kayo nga sa ngayon ay may kalumbayan: nguni't muli ko kayong makikita, at magagalak ang inyong puso, at walang makapagaalis sa inyo ng inyong kagalakan.
23 (S)At sa araw na yaon ay hindi kayo magtatanong sa akin ng anomang tanong. (T)Katotohanan, katotohanang sinasabi ko sa inyo, Kung kayo'y hihingi ng anoman sa Ama, ay ibibigay niya sa inyo sa aking pangalan.
24 Hanggang ngayo'y wala pa kayong hinihinging anoman sa pangalan ko: kayo'y magsihingi, at kayo'y tatanggap, (U)upang malubos ang inyong kagalakan.
25 Sinalita ko sa inyo ang mga bagay na ito sa malalabong pananalita: darating ang oras, na hindi ko na kayo pagsasalitaan sa malalabong pananalita, kundi (V)maliwanag na sa inyo'y sasaysayin ko ang tungkol sa Ama.
26 Sa araw na yao'y magsisihingi kayo sa aking pangalan: at sa inyo'y hindi ko sinasabi, na kayo'y idadalangin ko sa Ama;
27 Sapagka't (W)ang Ama rin ang umiibig sa inyo, sapagka't ako'y inyong inibig, (X)at kayo'y nagsisampalataya na ako'y nagbuhat sa Ama.
28 Nagbuhat ako sa Ama, (Y)at naparito ako sa sanglibutan: muling iniiwan ko ang sanglibutan, at (Z)ako'y paroroon sa Ama.
29 Sinasabi ng kaniyang mga alagad, Narito, ngayo'y nagsasalita kang malinaw, at wala kang sinasalitang anomang malabong pananalita.
30 Ngayon ay nakikilala namin na nalalaman mo ang lahat ng mga bagay, at hindi nangangailangan na tanungin ka ng sinoman: dahil dito'y nagsisisampalataya kami na ikaw ay nagbuhat sa Dios.
31 Sinagot sila ni Jesus, Ngayon baga'y nagsisisampalataya kayo?
32 Narito, ang oras ay dumarating, (AA)oo, dumating na, na kayo'y mangangalat, ang bawa't tao sa kanikaniyang sarili, at ako'y iiwan ninyong magisa: (AB)at gayon ma'y hindi ako nagiisa, sapagka't ang Ama ay sumasa akin.
33 Ang mga bagay na ito ay sinalita ko sa inyo, upang kayo'y magkaroon (AC)sa akin ng kapayapaan. (AD)Sa sanglibutan ay mayroon kayong kapighatian: nguni't laksan ninyo ang loob; (AE)aking dinaig ang sanglibutan.

16 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Gesù avverte i suoi delle persecuzioni future
16 (A)«Io vi ho detto queste cose affinché non siate sviati. 2 Vi espelleranno dalle sinagoghe; anzi, l’ora viene che chiunque vi ucciderà, crederà di rendere un culto a Dio. 3 Faranno questo[a] perché non hanno conosciuto né il Padre né me. 4 Ma io vi ho detto queste cose affinché, quando sia giunta l’ora[b], vi ricordiate che ve le ho dette. Non ve le dissi da principio perché ero con voi.
Lo Spirito agisce nel mondo e nei discepoli
5 (B)«Ma ora vado a colui che mi ha mandato; e nessuno di voi mi domanda: “Dove vai?” 6 Invece, perché vi ho detto queste cose, la tristezza vi ha riempito il cuore. 7 Eppure, io vi dico la verità: è utile per voi che io me ne vada; perché se non me ne vado, non verrà a voi il Consolatore; ma se me ne vado, io ve lo manderò. 8 Quando sarà venuto, convincerà il mondo quanto al peccato, alla giustizia e al giudizio. 9 Quanto al peccato, perché non credono in me; 10 quanto alla giustizia, perché vado al Padre [mio] e non mi vedrete più; 11 quanto al giudizio, perché il principe di questo mondo[c] è stato giudicato.
12 Ho ancora molte cose da dirvi, ma non sono per ora alla vostra portata; 13 quando però sarà venuto lui, lo Spirito della verità, egli vi guiderà in tutta la verità, perché non parlerà di suo, ma dirà tutto quello che avrà udito, e vi annuncerà le cose a venire. 14 Egli mi glorificherà perché prenderà del mio e ve lo annuncerà. 15 Tutte le cose che ha il Padre, sono mie; per questo ho detto che prenderà[d] del mio e ve lo annuncerà.
Gesù parla della sua morte, della sua risurrezione e della sua venuta
16 (C)«Tra poco non mi vedrete più; e tra un altro poco mi vedrete [perché vado al Padre]».
17 Allora alcuni dei suoi discepoli dissero tra di loro: «Che cos’è questo che ci dice: “Tra poco non mi vedrete più” e: “Tra un altro poco mi vedrete” e: “Perché vado al Padre”?» 18 Dicevano dunque: «Che cos’è questo “tra poco” {che egli dice}? Noi non sappiamo quello che egli voglia dire».
19 Gesù comprese che volevano interrogarlo e disse loro: «Voi vi domandate l’un l’altro che cosa significano quelle mie parole: “Tra poco non mi vedrete più” e: “Tra un altro poco mi vedrete”? 20 In verità, in verità vi dico che voi piangerete e farete cordoglio, e il mondo si rallegrerà. Sarete rattristati, ma la vostra tristezza sarà cambiata in gioia. 21 La donna, quando partorisce, prova dolore perché è venuta la sua ora; ma quando ha dato alla luce il bambino, non si ricorda più dell’angoscia, per la gioia che sia venuta al mondo una creatura umana. 22 Così anche voi siete ora nel dolore; ma io vi vedrò di nuovo e il vostro cuore si rallegrerà, e nessuno vi toglierà la vostra gioia. 23 In quel giorno non mi rivolgerete alcuna domanda. In verità, in verità vi dico che qualsiasi cosa domanderete al Padre nel mio nome, egli ve la darà. 24 Fino ad ora non avete chiesto nulla nel mio nome; chiedete e riceverete, affinché la vostra gioia sia completa.
25 (D)«Vi ho detto queste cose in similitudini; l’ora viene che non vi parlerò più in similitudini, ma apertamente vi farò conoscere il Padre. 26 In quel giorno chiederete nel mio nome; e non vi dico che io pregherò il Padre per voi, 27 poiché il Padre stesso vi ama, perché mi avete amato e avete creduto che sono proceduto da Dio. 28 Sono proceduto dal Padre e sono venuto nel mondo; ora lascio il mondo, e vado al Padre».
29 I suoi discepoli [gli] dissero: «Ecco, adesso tu parli apertamente e non usi similitudini. 30 Ora sappiamo che sai ogni cosa e non hai bisogno che nessuno ti interroghi; perciò crediamo che sei proceduto da Dio». 31 Gesù rispose loro: «Adesso credete[e]? 32 L’ora viene, anzi è venuta, che sarete dispersi, ciascuno per conto suo, e mi lascerete solo; ma io non sono solo, perché il Padre è con me. 33 Vi ho detto queste cose, affinché abbiate pace in me. Nel mondo avete[f] tribolazione; ma fatevi coraggio, io ho vinto il mondo».

16 “All this(A) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(B) 2 They will put you out of the synagogue;(C) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(D) 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(E) 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(F) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(G) 5 but now I am going to him who sent me.(H) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(I) 6 Rather, you are filled with grief(J) because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(K) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(L) 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin,(M) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(N) because I am going to the Father,(O) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(P) now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(Q) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(R) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(S) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(T) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy
16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(U) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(V)
17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(W) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(X) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(Y) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(Z) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(AA) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(AB) but I will see you again(AC) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(AD) 23 In that day(AE) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(AF) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(AG) and your joy will be complete.(AH)
25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(AI) a time is coming(AJ) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(AK) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(AL) and have believed that I came from God.(AM) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(AN)
29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(AO) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(AP) that you came from God.”(AQ)
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(AR) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(AS) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(AT) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(AU)
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(AV) In this world you will have trouble.(AW) But take heart! I have overcome(AX) the world.”
