Jesús les lava los pies a sus seguidores
13 Era el día antes de la fiesta de la Pascua. Jesús sabía que ya era hora de dejar este mundo y regresar al Padre. Mientras estuvo en el mundo, siempre amó a sus seguidores pero en esta ocasión mostró su amor al máximo.
2 Estaban comiendo. El diablo ya había puesto en la mente de Judas Iscariote, hijo de Simón, que traicionara a Jesús. 3 Jesús sabía que el Padre le había dado poder sobre todo, y sabía que había venido de Dios e iba a regresar a él. 4 Mientras estaban comiendo, Jesús se levantó, se quitó el manto y se ató una toalla. 5 Luego echó agua en un recipiente, empezó a lavarles los pies[a] a sus seguidores y les secaba los pies con la toalla que llevaba en la cintura.
6 Cuando estaba por lavar los pies de Simón Pedro, este dijo:
—Señor, ¿tú vas a lavar mis pies?
7 Jesús le contestó:
—Ahora no entiendes lo que estoy haciendo, pero después lo entenderás.
8 Pedro le dijo:
—¡Tú nunca vas a lavarme los pies!
Jesús le respondió:
—Si no te lavo los pies, no podrás ser de los míos.
9 Simón Pedro le dijo:
—Señor, ¡entonces no me laves sólo los pies, sino también las manos y la cabeza!
Jesús le dijo:
10 —El que ya se bañó no necesita lavarse más que los pies, porque todo su cuerpo ya está limpio. Ustedes están limpios, pero no todos.
11 Él sabía quién lo iba a traicionar, por eso dijo: «pero no todos».
12 Cuando terminó de lavarles los pies, se vistió, volvió a la mesa y les dijo:
—¿Entienden lo que les hice? 13 Ustedes me llaman: “Maestro” y “Señor” y tienen razón, porque lo soy. 14 Yo, el Señor y el Maestro, les he lavado los pies. Así que ustedes deben lavarse los pies unos a otros. Les he dado ejemplo 15 para que traten a los demás como yo los he tratado a ustedes. 16 Les digo la verdad: Ustedes ya saben que un siervo no es superior a su amo, y que ningún mensajero es más importante que el que lo envió. 17 Ahora que entienden lo que es servirse unos a otros y lavarse los pies unos a otros, Dios los bendecirá si lo ponen en práctica.
18 »No estoy hablando de todos ustedes. Yo sé quiénes son los que he elegido, pero debe cumplirse lo que dice la Escritura: “Mi compañero[b] se ha vuelto en mi contra”.[c] 19 Les digo esto ahora, antes de que suceda, para que cuando suceda, crean que Yo Soy[d]. 20 Les digo la verdad: el que reciba a alguien que yo envío, me recibe a mí. El que me recibe a mí, recibe al Padre que me envió».
Jesús dice quién estará en contra suya
(Mt 26:20-25; Mr 14:17-21; Lc 22:21-23)
21 Después de haber dicho esto, Jesús se entristeció profundamente y declaró:
—Les digo la verdad: uno de ustedes me traicionará.
22 Sus seguidores empezaron a mirarse unos a otros, sin tener idea acerca de quién estaba hablando. 23 Al lado de Jesús estaba el seguidor a quien Jesús amaba. 24 Entonces Simón Pedro le hizo señas para que le preguntara a Jesús de quién estaba hablando. 25 Este seguidor se acercó aun más a Jesús para preguntarle:
—Señor, ¿quién es?
26 Jesús le respondió:
—Voy a mojar pan en el plato. Después lo daré al que me va a traicionar.
Lo tomó y se lo entregó a Judas Iscariote, el hijo de Simón. 27 En cuanto Judas recibió el pan, Satanás entró en él. Jesús le dijo:
—Haz rápido lo que vas a hacer.
28 Pero ninguno de los que estaban comiendo con él supo por qué le había dicho esto. 29 Como Judas era el encargado del dinero, algunos pensaron que Jesús quería que comprara algo para la fiesta. Otros pensaron que quería que diera algo a los pobres. 30 Al recibir el pan, Judas se fue inmediatamente. Ya era de noche.
Jesús habla sobre su muerte
31 Después de que Judas se fue, Jesús dijo:
—Ahora el Hijo del hombre recibe honra. Dios también recibe honra a través del Hijo del hombre. 32 Si Dios recibe honra a través de él, entonces le dará honra al Hijo del hombre a través de sí mismo, y lo hará muy pronto.
33 »Hijitos míos, ya no voy a estar con ustedes por mucho tiempo. Me buscarán y ahora les digo como les dije a los judíos: “No pueden ir a donde yo voy”.
34 »Les estoy dando un mandamiento nuevo: que se amen los unos a los otros. Ámense tal como yo los amé. 35 Todo el mundo se va a dar cuenta de que ustedes son mis seguidores si se aman los unos a los otros».
Se anuncia la negación de Pedro
(Mt 26:31-35; Mr 14:27-31; Lc 22:31-34)
36 Simón Pedro le dijo:
—Señor, ¿a dónde vas?
Jesús le contestó:
—A donde voy tú no me puedes seguir ahora, pero me seguirás después.
37 Pedro le dijo:
—Señor, ¿por qué no puedo seguirte ahora? Yo daría mi vida por ti.
38 Jesús le respondió:
—Darás tu vida. Pero te aseguro que antes de que cante el gallo, me habrás negado tres veces.

Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet
13 Now (A)before (B)the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that (C)his hour had come (D)to depart out of this world to the Father, (E)having loved (F)his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when (G)the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing (H)that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that (I)he had come from God and (J)was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, (K)tied it around his waist. 5 Then he (L)poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 (M)Jesus answered him, “What I am doing (N)you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 (O)Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, (P)“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, (Q)except for his feet,[a] but is completely clean. 12 When he had washed their feet and (U)put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, (V)“Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 (W)You call me (X)Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, (Y)you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, (Z)that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, (AA)a servant[c] is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, (AB)blessed are you if you do them. 18 (AC)I am not speaking of all of you; I know (AD)whom I have chosen. But (AE)the Scripture will be fulfilled,[d] (AF)‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 (AG)I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, (AH)whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
One of You Will Betray Me
21 After saying these things, (AI)Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, (AJ)“Truly, truly, I say to you, (AK)one of you will betray me.” 22 (AL)The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 (AM)One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table (AN)at Jesus' side,[e] 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus[f] of whom he was speaking. 25 (AO)So that disciple, (AP)leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, (AQ)“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread (AR)when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, (AS)he gave it to Judas, (AT)the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, (AU)Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, (AV)“What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, (AW)because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need (AX)for the feast,” or that he should (AY)give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. (AZ)And it was night.
A New Commandment
31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, (BA)“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and (BB)God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, (BC)God will also glorify him in himself, and (BD)glorify him at once. 33 Little children, (BE)yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just (BF)as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 (BG)A new commandment (BH)I give to you, (BI)that you love one another: (BJ)just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 (BK)By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial
36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” (BL)Jesus answered him, “Where I am going (BM)you cannot follow me now, (BN)but you will follow afterward.” 37 (BO)Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, (BP)the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

13 It was just before the festival of Pesach, and Yeshua knew that the time had come for him to pass from this world to the Father. Having loved his own people in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 They were at supper, and the Adversary had already put the desire to betray him into the heart of Y’hudah Ben-Shim‘on from K’riot. 3 Yeshua was aware that the Father had put everything in his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God. 4 So he rose from the table, removed his outer garments and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 Then he poured some water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the talmidim and wipe them off with the towel wrapped around him.
6 He came to Shim‘on Kefa, who said to him, “Lord! You are washing my feet?” 7 Yeshua answered him, “You don’t understand yet what I am doing, but in time you will understand.” 8 “No!” said Kefa, “You will never wash my feet!” Yeshua answered him, “If I don’t wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 “Lord,” Shim‘on Kefa replied, “not only my feet, but my hands and head too!” 10 Yeshua said to him, “A man who has had a bath doesn’t need to wash, except his feet — his body is already clean. And you people are clean, but not all of you.” 11 (He knew who was betraying him; this is why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”)
12 After he had washed their feet, taken back his clothes and returned to the table, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me ‘Rabbi’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because I am. 14 Now if I, the Lord and Rabbi, have washed your feet, you also should wash each other’s feet. 15 For I have set you an example, so that you may do as I have done to you. 16 Yes, indeed! I tell you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is an emissary greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
18 “I’m not talking to all of you — I know which ones I have chosen. But the words of the Tanakh must be fulfilled that say, ‘The one eating my bread has turned against me.’[a] 19 I’m telling you now, before it happens; so that when it does happen, you may believe that I AM [who I say I am]. 20 Yes, indeed! I tell you that a person who receives someone I send receives me, and that anyone who receives me receives the One who sent me.”
21 After saying this, Yeshua, in deep anguish of spirit, declared, “Yes, indeed! I tell you that one of you will betray me.” 22 The talmidim stared at one another, totally mystified — whom could he mean? 23 One of his talmidim, the one Yeshua particularly loved, was reclining close beside him. 24 So Shim‘on Kefa motioned to him and said, “Ask which one he’s talking about.” 25 Leaning against Yeshua’s chest, he asked Yeshua, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Yeshua answered, “It’s the one to whom I give this piece of matzah after I dip it in the dish.” So he dipped the piece of matzah and gave it to Y’hudah Ben-Shim‘on from K’riot. 27 As soon as Y’hudah took the piece of matzah, the Adversary went into him. “What you are doing, do quickly!” Yeshua said to him. 28 But no one at the table understood why he had said this to him. 29 Some thought that since Y’hudah was in charge of the common purse, Yeshua was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival,” or telling him to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as he had taken the piece of matzah, Y’hudah went out, and it was night.
31 After Y’hudah had left, Yeshua said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32 If the Son has glorified God, God will himself glorify the Son, and will do so without delay. 33 Little children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and, as I said to the Judeans, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ now I say it to you as well.
34 “I am giving you a new command: that you keep on loving each other. In the same way that I have loved you, you are also to keep on loving each other. 35 Everyone will know that you are my talmidim by the fact that you have love for each other.”
36 Shim‘on Kefa said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Yeshua answered, “Where I am going, you cannot follow me now; but you will follow later.” 37 “Lord,” Kefa said to him, “why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!” 38 Yeshua answered, “You will lay down your life for me? Yes, indeed! I tell you, before the rooster crows you will disown me three times.
