De ongehoorzaamheid van Achan
7 Maar er was zonde onder de Israëlieten. Gods bevel dat alles moest worden vernietigd, was niet door iedereen opgevolgd. Achan, de zoon van Karmi, de zoon van Zabdi, de zoon van Zerach, uit de stam van Juda, had namelijk een deel van de buit voor zichzelf gehouden. Daarom werd de Here woedend op het volk Israël. 2 Het kwam uit toen kort na de verovering van Jericho Jozua enkele mannen op een verkenningstocht naar de stad Ai stuurde. 3 Na hun terugkeer zeiden zij tegen Jozua: ‘Het is maar een kleine stad. Twee- tot drieduizend man zijn voldoende om haar te vernietigen, wij hoeven dus niet met het hele leger te gaan.’ 4 Ongeveer drieduizend soldaten trokken eropuit, maar zij werden door de mannen van Ai op de vlucht gejaagd. 5 Hierbij vielen zesendertig doden! Deze sneuvelden tijdens de achtervolging op de helling bij de steengroeven. Deze onverwachte nederlaag verlamde de Israëlieten en de moed zonk hen in de schoenen. 6 Jozua scheurde zijn kleren en bleef samen met de leiders van Israël tot de avond op de grond liggen voor de ark van de Here. Zij gooiden stof op hun hoofd. 7 Jozua riep tot de Here: ‘Here God, waarom hebt U ons de Jordaan laten oversteken als U ons wilt laten doden door de Amorieten? Hadden we er maar genoegen mee genomen aan de andere kant van de Jordaan te blijven. 8 Here, wat moet ik doen nu Israël op de vlucht is geslagen voor zijn vijanden? 9 Als de Kanaänieten en de andere volken in de omgeving dit horen, zullen zij ons aanvallen en vermoorden. En wat zult U dan doen voor de eer van uw grote naam?’
10,11 Maar de Here zei tegen Jozua: ‘Ga staan! Waarom ligt u languit op de grond? De Israëlieten hebben gezondigd door niet te gehoorzamen aan mijn bevel. Zij hebben buit genomen, hoewel Ik dat had verboden. Zij hebben er ook om gelogen en het stiekem tussen hun spullen verstopt. 12 Daarom is het volk van Israël verslagen. Daarom vluchtten uw mannen voor hun vijanden, want er rust een vloek op hen. Ik zal u niet langer terzijde staan, tenzij u zich volledig van deze zonde ontdoet. 13 Sta op! Zeg tegen het volk: “Ieder van u moet zich heiligen als voorbereiding op de dag van morgen, want de Here, de God van Israël, zegt dat iemand van Hem heeft gestolen en dat u uw vijanden niet eerder kunt verslaan, voordat u met deze zonde hebt afgerekend. 14 Morgenochtend moet u stam voor stam aantreden. Dan zal de Here de stam aanwijzen waartoe de schuldige man behoort. Die stam moet daarna per familie verschijnen, waarna de Here de schuldige familie zal aanduiden, daarna moet elk gezin verschijnen, gevolgd door ieder gezinslid afzonderlijk. 15 Degene die heeft gestolen wat aan de Here toebehoort, zal samen met zijn familieleden worden verbrand. Hij heeft het verbond van de Here geschonden en een vloek over alle Israëlieten gebracht.” ’
16 De volgende dag liet Jozua al heel vroeg alle stammen van Israël aantreden en de stam van Juda werd aangewezen. 17 Toen traden de families van de stam van Juda naar voren, waarbij die van Zerach werd aangewezen. Toen de gezinnen van deze familie aantraden, werd het gezin van Zabdi aangewezen. 18 Eén voor één werden daarna de gezinsleden van Zabdi voorgeleid en zijn kleinzoon Achan werd aangewezen als de schuldige. 19 Jozua zei tegen Achan: ‘Mijn zoon, geef eer aan de God van Israël en belijd Hem uw zonden. Vertel mij wat u hebt gedaan.’ 20 ‘Ik heb gezondigd tegen de Here, de God van Israël,’ bekende Achan. 21 ‘Ik zag een prachtige Babylonische mantel, ruim twee kilo zilver en een staaf goud, die zoʼn vijfhonderdvijftig gram woog. Ik kon ze niet laten liggen en heb ze meegenomen en begraven onder mijn tent. Het zilver ligt onderaan.’ 22 Jozua stuurde enkele mannen om de buit te halen. Zij gingen naar de tent en vonden de gestolen waar, precies op de plaats die Achan had genoemd. Het zilver lag inderdaad onderaan. 23 Zij brachten alles naar Jozua en de Israëlieten en legden het voor het oog van de Here op de grond. 24 Daarna namen Jozua en de andere Israëlieten Achan, het zilver, de mantel, de staaf goud, zijn zonen, dochters, ossen, ezels, schapen, zijn tent en alles wat hij bezat mee naar het dal van Achor. 25 Toen zei Jozua tegen Achan: ‘Waarom hebt u deze vloek over ons gebracht? Nu zal de Here een ramp over u brengen.’ Daarop stenigden de mannen van Israël hen, verbrandden de lijken 26 en stapelden er een grote hoop stenen overheen. Die stenen liggen daar nu nog en die plaats wordt nog steeds het Rampdal genoemd. Zo werd de toorn van de Here gestild.

7 And the sons of Israel commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, taketh of the devoted thing, and the anger of Jehovah burneth against the sons of Israel.
2 And Joshua sendeth men from Jericho to Ai, which [is] near Beth-Aven, on the east of Bethel, and speaketh unto them, saying, `Go up and spy the land;' and the men go up and spy Ai,
3 and they turn back unto Joshua, and say unto him, `Let not all the people go up; let about two thousand men, or about three thousand men, go up, and they smite Ai; cause not all the people to labour thither; for they [are] few.'
4 And there go up of the people thither about three thousand men, and they flee before the men of Ai,
5 and the men of Ai smite of them about thirty and six men, and pursue them before the gate unto Shebarim, and they smite them in Morad; and the heart of the people is melted, and becometh water.
6 And Joshua rendeth his garments, and falleth on his face to the earth before the ark of Jehovah till the evening, he and the elders of Israel, and they cause dust to go up on their head.
7 And Joshua saith, `Ah, Lord Jehovah, why hast Thou at all caused this people to pass over the Jordan, to give us into the hand of the Amorite to destroy us? -- and oh that we had been willing -- and we dwell beyond the Jordan!
8 Oh, Lord, what do I say, after that Israel hath turned the neck before its enemies?
9 and the Canaanite and all the inhabitants of the land do hear, and have come round against us, and cut off our name out of the earth; and what dost Thou do for Thy great name?'
10 And Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Rise for thee, why [is] this? -- thou [art] falling on thy face?
11 Israel hath sinned, and also they have transgressed My covenant which I commanded them, and also taken of the devoted thing, and also stolen, and also deceived, and also put [it] among their vessels,
12 and the sons of Israel have not been able to stand before their enemies; the neck they turn before their enemies, for they have become a devoted thing; I add not to be with you -- if ye destroy not the devoted thing out of your midst.
13 `Rise, sanctify the people, and thou hast said, Sanctify yourselves for to-morrow; for thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, A devoted thing [is] in thy midst, O Israel, thou art not able to stand before thine enemies till your turning aside of the devoted thing out of your midst;
14 and ye have been brought near in the morning by your tribes, and it hath been, the tribe which Jehovah doth capture doth draw near by families, and the family which Jehovah doth capture doth draw near by households, and the household which Jehovah doth capture doth draw near by men;
15 and it hath been, he who is captured with the devoted thing is burnt with fire, he and all that he hath, because he hath transgressed the covenant of Jehovah, and because he hath done folly in Israel.'
16 And Joshua riseth early in the morning, and bringeth Israel near by its tribes, and the tribe of Judah is captured;
17 and he bringeth near the family of Judah, and he captureth the family of the Zarhite; and he bringeth near the family of the Zarhite by men, and Zabdi is captured;
18 and he bringeth near his household by men, and Achan -- son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah -- is captured.
19 And Joshua saith unto Achan, `My son, put, I pray thee, honour on Jehovah, God of Israel, and give to Him thanks, and declare, I pray thee, to me, what thou hast done -- hide not from me.'
20 And Achan answereth Joshua, and saith, `Truly I have sinned against Jehovah, God of Israel, and thus and thus I have done;
21 and I see among the spoil a goodly robe of Shinar, and two hundred shekels of silver, and one wedge of gold, whose weight [is] fifty shekels, and I desire them, and take them; and lo, they [are] hid in the earth, in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.'
22 And Joshua sendeth messengers, and they run unto the tent, and lo, it is hidden in his tent, and the silver under it;
23 and they take them out of the midst of the tent, and bring them in unto Joshua, and unto all the sons of Israel, and pour them out before Jehovah.
24 And Joshua taketh Achan son of Zerah, and the silver, and the robe, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his ox, and his ass, and his flock, and his tent, and all that he hath, and all Israel with him, and they cause them to go up the valley of Achor.
25 And Joshua saith, `What! thou hast troubled us! -- Jehovah doth trouble thee this day;' and all Israel cast stones at him, and they burn them with fire, and they stone them with stones,
26 and they raise up over him a great heap of stones unto this day, and Jehovah turneth back from the heat of His anger, therefore hath [one] called the name of that place `Valley of Achor' till this day.

7 EMPERO los hijos de Israel cometieron prevaricación en el anatema: porque Achân, hijo de Carmi, hijo de Zabdi, hijo de Zera, de la tribu de Judá, tomó del anatema; y la ira de Jehová se encendió contra los hijos de Israel.
2 Y Josué envió hombres desde Jericó á Hai, que estaba junto á Beth-aven hacia el oriente de Beth-el; y hablóles diciendo: Subid, y reconoced la tierra. Y ellos subieron, y reconocieron á Hai.
3 Y volviendo á Josué, dijéronle: No suba todo el pueblo, mas suban como dos mil ó como tres mil hombre, y tomarán á Hai: no fatigues á todo el pueblo allí, porque son pocos.
4 Y subieron allá del pueblo como tres mil hombres, los cuales huyeron delante de los de Hai.
5 Y los de Hai hirieron de ellos como treinta y seis hombre, y siguiéronlos desde la puerta hasta Sebarim, y los rompieron en la bajada: por lo que se disolvió el corazón del pueblo, y vino á ser como agua.
6 Entonces Josué rompió sus vestidos, y postróse en tierra sobre su rostro delante del arca de Jehová hasta la tarde, él y los ancianos de Israel; y echaron polvo sobre sus cabezas.
7 Y Josué dijo: Ah, Señor Jehová! ¿Por qué hiciste pasar á este pueblo el Jordán, para entregarnos en las manos de los Amorrheos, que nos destruyan? Ojalá nos hubiéramos quedado de la otra parte del Jordán!
8 Ay Señor! ¿qué diré, ya que Israel ha vuelto las espaldas delante de sus enemigos?
9 Porque los Cananeos y todos los moradores de la tierra oirán, y nos cercarán, y raerán nuestro nombre de sobre la tierra: entonces ¿qué harás tú á tu grande nombre?
10 Y Jehová dijo á Josué: Levántate; ¿por qué te postras así sobre tu rostro?
11 Israel ha pecado, y aun han quebrantado mi pacto que yo les había mandado; pues aun han tomado del anatema, y hasta han hurtado, y también han mentido, y aun lo han guardado entre sus enseres.
12 Por esto los hijos de Israel no podrán estar delante de sus enemigos, sino que delante de sus enemigos volverán las espaldas; por cuanto han venido á ser anatema: ni seré más con vosotros, si no destruyereis el anatema de en medio de vosotros.
13 Levántate, santifica al pueblo, y di: Santificaos para mañana, porque Jehová el Dios de Israel dice así: Anatema hay en medio de ti, Israel; no podrás estar delante de tus enemigos, hasta tanto que hayáis quitado el anatema de en medio de vosotros.
14 Os allegaréis, pues, mañana por vuestras tribus; y la tribu que Jehová tomare, se allegará por sus familias; y la familia que Jehová tomare, se allegará por sus casas; y la casa que Jehová tomare, allegaráse por los varones;
15 Y el que fuere cogido en el anatema, será quemado á fuego, él y todo lo que tiene, por cuanto ha quebrantado el pacto de Jehová, y ha cometido maldad en Israel.
16 Josué, pues, levantándose de mañana, hizo allegar á Israel por sus tribus; y fué tomada la tribu de Judá;
17 Y haciendo allegar la tribu de Judá, fué tomada la familia de los de Zera; haciendo luego allegar la familia de los de Zera por los varones, fué tomado Zabdi;
18 E hizo allegar su casa por los varones, y fué tomado Achân, hijo de Carmi, hijo de Zabdi, hijo de Zera, de la tribu de Judá.
19 Entonces Josué dijo á Achân: Hijo mío, da gloria ahora á Jehová el Dios de Israel, y dale alabanza, y declárame ahora lo que has hecho; no me lo encubras.
20 Y Achân respondió á Josué, diciendo: Verdaderamente yo he pecado contra Jehová el Dios de Israel, y he hecho así y así:
21 Que vi entre los despojos un manto babilónico muy bueno, y doscientos siclos de plata, y un changote de oro de peso de cincuenta siclos; lo cual codicié, y tomé: y he aquí que está escondido debajo de tierra en el medio de mi tienda, y el dinero debajo de ello.
22 Josué entonces envió mensajeros, los cuales fueron corriendo á la tienda; y he aquí estaba escondido en su tienda, y el dinero debajo de ello:
23 Y tomándolo de en medio de la tienda, trajéronlo á Josué y á todos los hijos de Israel, y pusiéronlo delante de Jehová.
24 Entonces Josué, y todo Israel con él, tomó á Achân hijo de Zera, y el dinero, y el manto, y el changote de oro, y sus hijos, y sus hijas, y sus bueyes, y sus asnos, y sus ovejas, y su tienda, y todo cuanto tenía, y lleváronlo todo al valle de Achôr;
25 Y dijo Josué: ¿Por qué nos has turbado? Túrbete Jehová en este día. Y todos los Israelitas los apedrearon, y los quemaron á fuego, después de apedrearlos con piedras;
26 Y levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras, hasta hoy. Y Jehová se tornó de la ira de su furor. Y por esto fué llamado aquel lugar el Valle de Achôr, hasta hoy.

7 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against the children of Israel.
2 And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.
3 And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
4 So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.
5 And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
6 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the Lord until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
7 And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord God, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
8 O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!
9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?
10 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.
12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.
14 In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the Lord taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the Lord shall take shall come by households; and the household which the Lord shall take shall come man by man.
15 And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.
16 So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:
17 And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:
18 And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.
20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
23 And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord.
24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.
25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the Lord shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.
26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the Lord turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
