5 (A) När amoreernas alla kungar på Jordans västra sida och kananeernas alla kungar vid havet nu fick höra hur Herren hade låtit vattnet i Jordan torka bort framför Israels barn medan vi[a] gick över, försvann deras mod och de hade ingen kraft[b] kvar inför Israels barn.
Omskärelsen i Gilgal
2 (B) Vid den tiden sade Herren till Josua: ”Gör dig flintknivar och omskär Israels barn för andra gången.” 3 Då tillverkade Josua flintknivar och omskar Israels barn vid Förhudshöjden. 4 Orsaken till att Josua omskar dem var denna: Alla män som hade dragit ut ur Egypten, alla stridsdugliga män, hade dött under ökenvandringen efter uttåget ur Egypten. 5 De som hade dragit ut hade alla blivit omskurna, men de som var födda under ökenvandringen efter uttåget ur Egypten var alla oomskurna. 6 (C) Israels barn hade vandrat i öknen i fyrtio år tills hela folket, alla stridsdugliga män som dragit ut ur Egypten, var döda eftersom de inte hade lyssnat till Herrens röst. Därför svor Herren att han inte skulle låta dem se det land som han med ed hade lovat deras fäder att ge oss, ett land som flödar av mjölk och honung. 7 Men deras söner, som han lät komma i deras ställe, dem omskar nu Josua. De var nämligen oomskurna, eftersom de inte hade blivit omskurna under vandringen.
8 När allt folket hade blivit omskuret stannade de kvar i lägret tills de hade återhämtat sig. 9 Och Herren sade till Josua: ”I dag har jag lyft av er Egyptens vanära.” Platsen fick namnet Gilgal,[c] och heter så än i dag.
10 (D) På kvällen den fjortonde dagen i månaden, medan Israels barn hade sitt läger i Gilgal, firade de påskhögtid på Jerikos hedmarker. 11 (E) Dagen efter påskhögtiden, just den dagen, åt de osyrat bröd och rostade ax av landets säd. 12 (F) Mannat upphörde dagen därpå[d], när de nu åt av landets säd. Israels barn fick inte manna längre, utan de åt det året av skörden i landet Kanaan.
Josua och mannen med svärdet
13 (G) Medan Josua var vid Jeriko, hände det en gång att han lyfte blicken och fick se en man stå där framför honom med ett draget svärd i sin hand. Då gick Josua fram till honom och frågade honom: ”Tillhör du oss eller våra fiender?” 14 (H) Han svarade: ”Nej, jag är befälhavare över Herrens här. Nu har jag kommit.” Då föll Josua ner till jorden på sitt ansikte, tillbad och sade till honom: ”Vad har min herre för budskap till sin tjänare?” 15 (I) Befälhavaren över Herrens här sade då till Josua: ”Ta av dig dina skor[e], för platsen där du står är helig.” Och Josua gjorde så.

Israel bekräftar sin överlåtelse till Herren
5 När folken på västra sidan Jordan, amoreerna och kananeerna, som bodde utmed Medelhavets kust, fick höra att Herren låtit Jordan torka upp så att Israels folk hade kunnat gå över, försvann allt deras mod, och de blev förlamade av skräck.
2-3 Herren sa då till Josua att han skulle låta omskära alla män i Israel. Detta var andra gången i Israels historia som sådant skedde. Herren gav dem instruktioner om att göra knivar av flinta för detta ändamål, och platsen där omskärelsen ägde rum fick namnet Förhudshöjden.
4-5 Skälet till omskärelsen var att hela den generation som omskurits efter uttåget ur Egypten hade dött under vandringen i öknen. Ingen av de pojkar som fötts i öknen hade blivit omskuren.
6 Israel hade nämligen vandrat fram och tillbaka i öknen under fyrtio år, tills alla de män som varit gamla nog att bära vapen när de drog ut ur Egypten hade dött. De hade inte varit lydiga mot Herren, och han hade svurit och sagt att han inte skulle låta dem komma in i Löfteslandet, det land som flyter av mjölk och honung.
7 Därför omskar Josua deras barn, som nu vuxit upp till män för att inta sina fäders platser.
8-9 Och Herren sa till Josua: I dag har jag gjort slut på er skam. Platsen där detta skedde fick namnet Gilgal (vilket betyder att avvältra) och kallas så än i dag. Efter denna ceremoni vilade folket i lägret tills deras sår var läkta.
10 Medan de var i lägret vid Gilgal på Jerikoslätten, firade de påsk. Det skedde på kvällen den fjortonde dagen i månaden.
11-12 Nästa dag började de äta av landets skörd. De bakade ojäst bröd och rostade sädeskorn att äta. Dagen därpå föll inget manna, och det föll sedan aldrig mer! Från den stunden levde de av skörden i Kanaans land.
Josua möter en ängel
13 När Josua betraktade Jeriko på nära håll, visade sig en man med draget svärd. Josua gick fram till honom och frågade: Är du vän eller fiende?
14 Jag är högste befälhavare över Herrens armé, svarade han. Josua böjde sig då till marken framför mannen och tillbad honom och sa: Ge mig dina order.
15 Ta av dig skorna, befallde ängeln honom, för platsen du står på är helig mark. Josua gjorde som han blivit tillsagd.

5 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, that were by the sea, heard how that Jehovah had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel, until [a]we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
2 At that time Jehovah said unto Joshua, Make thee knives of flint, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time. 3 And Joshua made him knives of flint, and circumcised the children of Israel at [b]the hill of the foreskins. 4 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: all the people that came forth out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came forth out of Egypt. 5 For all the people that came out were circumcised; but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, they had not circumcised. 6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the nation, even the men of war that came forth out of Egypt, were consumed, because they hearkened not unto the voice of Jehovah: unto whom Jehovah sware that he would not let them see the land which Jehovah sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. 7 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them did Joshua circumcise: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way. 8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the nation, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole. 9 And Jehovah said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of that place was called [c]Gilgal, unto this day.
10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal; and they kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho. 11 And they did eat of the produce of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes and parched grain, in the selfsame day. 12 And the manna ceased on the morrow, after they had eaten of the produce of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? 14 And he said, Nay; but as prince of the host of Jehovah am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? 15 And the prince of Jehovah’s host said unto Joshua, Put off thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

5 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast(A) heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they[a] had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear(B) and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.
Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal
2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives(C) and circumcise(D) the Israelites again.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.[b]
4 Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age(E)—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt.(F) 5 All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. 6 The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness(G) forty years(H) until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us,(I) a land flowing with milk and honey.(J) 7 So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. 8 And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed.(K)
9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal[c](L) to this day.
10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month,(M) while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover.(N) 11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land:(O) unleavened bread(P) and roasted grain.(Q) 12 The manna stopped the day after[d] they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.(R)
The Fall of Jericho
13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man(S) standing in front of him with a drawn sword(T) in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”
14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown(U) to the ground(V) in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord[e] have for his servant?”
15 The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.”(W) And Joshua did so.
