The Day the Sun Stood Still
10 Now King Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai and completely destroyed(A) it, treating Ai and its king as he had Jericho and its king, and that the inhabitants of Gibeon(B) had made peace with Israel and were living among them.(C) 2 So Adoni-zedek and his people were[a] greatly alarmed because Gibeon was a large city like one of the royal cities;(D) it was larger than Ai, and all its men were warriors. 3 Therefore King Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem sent word to King Hoham of Hebron, King Piram of Jarmuth, King Japhia of Lachish, and King Debir of Eglon, saying, 4 “Come up and help me. We will attack Gibeon, because they have made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.” 5 So the five Amorite kings—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon—joined forces, advanced with all their armies, besieged Gibeon, and fought against it.
6 Then the men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: “Don’t give up on your servants. Come quickly and save us! Help us, for all the Amorite kings living in the hill country have joined forces against us.” 7 So Joshua and all his troops, including all his best soldiers, came from Gilgal.(E)
8 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them,(F) for I have handed them over to you.(G) Not one of them will be able to stand against you.”(H)
9 So Joshua caught them by surprise, after marching all night from Gilgal. 10 The Lord threw them into confusion(I) before Israel. He defeated them in a great slaughter at Gibeon, chased them through the ascent of Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah. 11 As they fled before Israel, the Lord threw large hailstones on them(J) from the sky along the descent of Beth-horon all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died from the hail than the Israelites killed with the sword.
12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the Lord in the presence of Israel:
“Sun,(K) stand still over Gibeon,
and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”
13 And the sun stood still
and the moon stopped
until the nation took vengeance on its enemies.
Isn’t this written in the Book of Jashar?[b]
So the sun stopped
in the middle of the sky
and delayed its setting
almost a full day.
14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord listened to a man, because the Lord fought for Israel.(L) 15 Then Joshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp at Gilgal.
Execution of the Five Kings
16 Now the five defeated kings had fled and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 17 It was reported to Joshua, “The five kings have been found; they are hiding in the cave at Makkedah.”
18 Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and station men by it to guard the kings. 19 But as for the rest of you, don’t stay there. Pursue your enemies and attack them from behind. Don’t let them enter their cities, for the Lord your God has handed them over to you.” 20 So Joshua and the Israelites finished inflicting a terrible slaughter on them until they were destroyed, although a few survivors ran away to the fortified cities. 21 The people returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. And no one dared to threaten the Israelites.
22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings to me out of there.” 23 That is what they did. They brought the five kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon to Joshua out of the cave. 24 When they had brought the kings to him, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the military commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks. 25 Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid or discouraged. Be strong and courageous,(M) for the Lord will do this to all the enemies you fight.”
26 After this, Joshua struck them down and executed them. He hung[c] their bodies on five trees[d] and they were there until evening.(N) 27 At sunset Joshua commanded that they be taken down from the trees(O) and thrown into the cave where they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are still there today.(P)
Conquest of Southern Cities
28 On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and struck it down with the sword, including its king. He completely destroyed it[e] and everyone in it, leaving no survivors. So he treated the king of Makkedah as he had the king of Jericho.(Q)
29 Joshua and all Israel with him(R) crossed from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against Libnah.(S) 30 The Lord also handed it and its king over to Israel. He struck it down, putting everyone in it to the sword, and left no survivors in it. He treated Libnah’s king as he had the king of Jericho.
31 From Libnah, Joshua and all Israel with him crossed to Lachish. They laid siege to it and attacked it. 32 The Lord handed Lachish over to Israel, and Joshua captured it on the second day. He struck it down, putting everyone in it to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33 At that time King Horam of Gezer went to help Lachish,(T) but Joshua struck him down along with his people, leaving no survivors.
34 Then Joshua crossed from Lachish to Eglon and all Israel with him. They laid siege to it and attacked it. 35 On that day they captured it and struck it down, putting everyone in it to the sword. He completely destroyed it that day, just as he had done to Lachish.
36 Next, Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron(U) and attacked it. 37 They captured it and struck down its king, all its villages, and everyone in it with the sword. He left no survivors, just as he had done at Eglon. He completely destroyed Hebron and everyone in it.
38 Finally, Joshua turned toward Debir(V) and attacked it. And all Israel was with him. 39 He captured it—its king and all its villages. They struck them down with the sword and completely destroyed everyone in it, leaving no survivors. He treated Debir and its king as he had treated Hebron and as he had treated Libnah and its king.
40 So Joshua conquered the whole region(W)—the hill country, the Negev, the Judean foothills,[f] and the slopes—with all their kings, leaving no survivors. He completely destroyed every living being, as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.(X) 41 Joshua conquered everyone from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen(Y) as far as Gibeon. 42 Joshua captured all these kings and their land in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.(Z) 43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.

12 Llefarodd Josua wrth yr Arglwydd y dydd y rhoddodd yr Arglwydd yr Amoriaid o flaen meibion Israel: ac efe a ddywedodd yng ngolwg Israel, O haul, aros yn Gibeon; a thithau, leuad, yn nyffryn Ajalon. 13 A’r haul a arhosodd, a’r lleuad a safodd, nes i’r genedl ddial ar eu gelynion. Onid yw hyn yn ysgrifenedig yn llyfr yr Uniawn? Felly yr haul a safodd yng nghanol y nefoedd, ac ni frysiodd i fachludo dros ddiwrnod cyfan. 14 Ac ni bu y fath ddiwrnod â hwnnw o’i flaen ef, nac ar ei ôl ef, fel y gwrandawai yr Arglwydd ar lef dyn: canys yr Arglwydd a ymladdodd dros Israel.
15 A Josua a ddychwelodd, a holl Israel gydag ef, i’r gwersyll i Gilgal. 16 Ond y pum brenin hynny a ffoesant, ac a ymguddiasant mewn ogof ym Macceda. 17 A mynegwyd i Josua, gan ddywedyd, Y pum brenin a gafwyd ynghudd mewn ogof ym Macceda. 18 A dywedodd Josua, Treiglwch feini mawrion ar enau yr ogof, a gosodwch wrthi wŷr i’w cadw hwynt: 19 Ac na sefwch chwi; erlidiwch ar ôl eich gelynion, a threwch y rhai olaf ohonynt; na adewch iddynt fyned i’w dinasoedd: canys yr Arglwydd eich Duw a’u rhoddodd hwynt yn eich llaw chwi. 20 A phan ddarfu i Josua a meibion Israel eu taro hwynt â lladdfa fawr iawn, nes eu difa; yna y gweddillion a adawsid ohonynt a aethant i’r dinasoedd caerog. 21 A’r holl bobl a ddychwelasant i’r gwersyll at Josua ym Macceda mewn heddwch, heb symud o neb ei dafod yn erbyn meibion Israel. 22 A Josua a ddywedodd, Agorwch enau yr ogof, a dygwch allan y pum brenin hynny ataf fi o’r ogof. 23 A hwy a wnaethant felly, ac a ddygasant allan y pum brenin ato ef o’r ogof; sef brenin Jerwsalem, brenin Hebron, brenin Jarmuth, brenin Lachis, a brenin Eglon. 24 A phan ddygasant hwy y brenhinoedd hynny at Josua, yna Josua a alwodd am holl wŷr Israel, ac a ddywedodd wrth dywysogion y rhyfelwyr, y rhai a aethai gydag ef, Nesewch, gosodwch eich traed ar yddfau y brenhinoedd hyn. A hwy a nesasant, ac a osodasant eu traed ar eu gyddfau hwynt. 25 A Josua a ddywedodd wrthynt, Nac ofnwch, ac nac arswydwch; eithr ymwrolwch, ac ymegnïwch: canys fel hyn y gwna yr Arglwydd i’ch holl elynion yr ydych chwi yn ymladd i’w herbyn. 26 Ac wedi hyn Josua a’u trawodd hwynt, ac a’u rhoddodd i farwolaeth, ac a’u crogodd hwynt ar bum pren: a buant ynghrog ar y prennau hyd yr hwyr. 27 Ac ym mhryd machludo haul, y gorchmynnodd Josua iddynt eu disgyn hwynt oddi ar y prennau, a’u bwrw hwynt i’r ogof yr ymguddiasant ynddi; a bwriasant gerrig mawrion yng ngenau yr ogof, y rhai sydd yno hyd gorff y dydd hwn.
28 Josua hefyd a enillodd Macceda y dwthwn hwnnw, ac a’i trawodd hi â min y cleddyf, ac a ddifrododd ei brenin hi, hwynt‐hwy, a phob enaid ag oedd ynddi; ni adawodd efe un gweddill: canys efe a wnaeth i frenin Macceda, fel y gwnaethai i frenin Jericho.
29 Yna yr aeth Josua a holl Israel gydag ef o Macceda i Libna, ac a ymladdodd yn erbyn Libna. 30 A’r Arglwydd a’i rhoddodd hithau, a’i brenin, yn llaw Israel; ac yntau a’i trawodd hi â min y cleddyf, a phob enaid a’r oedd ynddi; ni adawodd ynddi un yng ngweddill: canys efe a wnaeth i’w brenin hi fel y gwnaethai i frenin Jericho.
31 A Josua a dramwyodd, a holl Israel gydag ef, o Libna i Lachis; ac a wersyllodd wrthi, ac a ymladdodd i’w herbyn. 32 A’r Arglwydd a roddodd Lachis yn llaw Israel; yr hwn a’i henillodd hi yr ail ddydd, ac a’i trawodd hi â min y cleddyf, a phob enaid ag oedd ynddi, yn ôl yr hyn oll a wnaethai efe i Libna.
33 Yna Horam brenin Geser a ddaeth i fyny i gynorthwyo Lachis: a Josua a’i trawodd ef a’i bobl, fel na adawyd iddo ef un yng ngweddill.

10 Now it came to pass, when Adonizedec king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;
2 That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.
3 Wherefore Adonizedec king of Jerusalem, sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,
4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.
5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.
6 And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.
7 So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.
8 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.
9 Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.
10 And the Lord discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.
11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.
12 Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the Lord fought for Israel.
15 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
16 But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.
17 And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.
18 And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:
19 And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand.
20 And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities.
21 And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
22 Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.
23 And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
24 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.
26 And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.
27 And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day.
28 And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.
29 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:
30 And the Lord delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.
31 And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:
32 And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
34 And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:
35 And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
36 And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:
37 And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.
38 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:
39 And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.
40 So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel commanded.
41 And Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.
42 And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.
43 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

The Sun Stands Still
10 Now Adoni-Zedek(A) king of Jerusalem(B) heard that Joshua had taken Ai(C) and totally destroyed[a](D) it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon(E) had made a treaty of peace(F) with Israel and had become their allies. 2 He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. 3 So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron,(G) Piram king of Jarmuth,(H) Japhia king of Lachish(I) and Debir(J) king of Eglon.(K) 4 “Come up and help me attack Gibeon,” he said, “because it has made peace(L) with Joshua and the Israelites.”
5 Then the five kings(M) of the Amorites(N)—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon—joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it.
6 The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal:(O) “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.”
7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army,(P) including all the best fighting men. 8 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid(Q) of them; I have given them into your hand.(R) Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”(S)
9 After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10 The Lord threw them into confusion(T) before Israel,(U) so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon.(V) Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon(W) and cut them down all the way to Azekah(X) and Makkedah.(Y) 11 As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the Lord hurled large hailstones(Z) down on them,(AA) and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.
12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites(AB) over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:
“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.(AC)”
13 So the sun stood still,(AD)
and the moon stopped,
till the nation avenged itself on[b] its enemies,
as it is written in the Book of Jashar.(AE)
The sun stopped(AF) in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting(AG) for Israel!
15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(AH)
Five Amorite Kings Killed
16 Now the five kings had fled(AI) and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. 17 When Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah, 18 he said, “Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. 19 But don’t stop; pursue your enemies! Attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.”
20 So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely,(AJ) but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities.(AK) 21 The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites.
22 Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” 23 So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24 When they had brought these kings(AL) to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, “Come here and put your feet(AM) on the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet(AN) on their necks.
25 Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous.(AO) This is what the Lord will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.” 26 Then Joshua put the kings to death and exposed their bodies on five poles, and they were left hanging on the poles until evening.
27 At sunset(AP) Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day.(AQ)
Southern Cities Conquered
28 That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors.(AR) And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.(AS)
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah(AT) and attacked it. 30 The Lord also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish;(AU) he took up positions against it and attacked it. 32 The Lord gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33 Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer(AV) had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left.
34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon;(AW) they took up positions against it and attacked it. 35 They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron(AX) and attacked it. 37 They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone(AY) in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir.(AZ) 39 They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron.(BA)
40 So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev,(BB) the western foothills and the mountain slopes,(BC) together with all their kings.(BD) He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.(BE) 41 Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea(BF) to Gaza(BG) and from the whole region of Goshen(BH) to Gibeon. 42 All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought(BI) for Israel.
43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.(BJ)

10 Adoni Tsédek, roi de Jérusalem, apprit que Josué s'était emparé d'Aï et l'avait dévouée par interdit, qu'il avait traité Aï et son roi comme il avait traité Jéricho et son roi, et que les habitants de Gabaon avaient fait la paix avec Israël et étaient au milieu d'eux.
2 Il eut alors une forte crainte; car Gabaon était une grande ville, comme une des villes royales, plus grande même qu'Aï, et tous ses hommes étaient vaillants.
3 Adoni Tsédek, roi de Jérusalem, fit dire à Hoham, roi d'Hébron, à Piream, roi de Jarmuth, à Japhia, roi de Lakis, et à Debir, roi d'Églon:
4 Montez vers moi, et aidez-moi, afin que nous frappions Gabaon, car elle a fait la paix avec Josué et avec les enfants d'Israël.
5 Cinq rois des Amoréens, le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d'Hébron, le roi de Jarmuth, le roi de Lakis, le roi d'Églon, se réunirent ainsi et montèrent avec toutes leurs armées; ils vinrent camper près de Gabaon, et l'attaquèrent.
6 Les gens de Gabaon envoyèrent dire à Josué, au camp de Guilgal: N'abandonne pas tes serviteurs, monte vers nous en hâte, délivre-nous, donne-nous du secours; car tous les rois des Amoréens, qui habitent la montagne, se sont réunis contre nous.
7 Josué monta de Guilgal, lui et tous les gens de guerre avec lui, et tous les vaillants hommes.
8 L'Éternel dit à Josué: Ne les crains point, car je les livre entre tes mains, et aucun d'eux ne tiendra devant toi.
9 Josué arriva subitement sur eux, après avoir marché toute la nuit depuis Guilgal.
10 L'Éternel les mit en déroute devant Israël; et Israël leur fit éprouver une grande défaite près de Gabaon, les poursuivit sur le chemin qui monte à Beth Horon, et les battit jusqu'à Azéka et à Makkéda.
11 Comme ils fuyaient devant Israël, et qu'ils étaient à la descente de Beth Horon, l'Éternel fit tomber du ciel sur eux de grosses pierres jusqu'à Azéka, et ils périrent; ceux qui moururent par les pierres de grêle furent plus nombreux que ceux qui furent tués avec l'épée par les enfants d'Israël.
12 Alors Josué parla à l'Éternel, le jour où l'Éternel livra les Amoréens aux enfants d'Israël, et il dit en présence d'Israël: Soleil, arrête-toi sur Gabaon, Et toi, lune, sur la vallée d'Ajalon!
13 Et le soleil s'arrêta, et la lune suspendit sa course, Jusqu'à ce que la nation eût tiré vengeance de ses ennemis. Cela n'est-il pas écrit dans le livre du Juste? Le soleil s'arrêta au milieu du ciel, Et ne se hâta point de se coucher, presque tout un jour.
14 Il n'y a point eu de jour comme celui-là, ni avant ni après, où l'Éternel ait écouté la voix d'un homme; car l'Éternel combattait pour Israël.
15 Et Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, retourna au camp à Guilgal.
16 Les cinq rois s'enfuirent, et se cachèrent dans une caverne à Makkéda.
17 On le rapporta à Josué, en disant: Les cinq rois se trouvent cachés dans une caverne à Makkéda.
18 Josué dit: Roulez de grosses pierres à l'entrée de la caverne, et mettez-y des hommes pour les garder.
19 Et vous, ne vous arrêtez pas, poursuivez vos ennemis, et attaquez-les par derrière; ne les laissez pas entrer dans leurs villes, car l'Éternel, votre Dieu, les a livrés entre vos mains.
20 Après que Josué et les enfants d'Israël leur eurent fait éprouver une très grande défaite, et les eurent complètement battus, ceux qui purent échapper se sauvèrent dans les villes fortifiées,
21 et tout le peuple revint tranquillement au camp vers Josué à Makkéda, sans que personne remuât sa langue contre les enfants d'Israël.
22 Josué dit alors: Ouvrez l'entrée de la caverne, faites-en sortir ces cinq rois, et amenez-les-moi.
23 Ils firent ainsi, et lui amenèrent les cinq rois qu'ils avaient fait sortir de la caverne, le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d'Hébron, le roi de Jarmuth, le roi de Lakis, le roi d'Églon.
24 Lorsqu'ils eurent amené ces rois devant Josué, Josué appela tous les hommes d'Israël, et dit aux chefs des gens de guerre qui avaient marché avec lui: Approchez-vous, mettez vos pieds sur les cous de ces rois. Ils s'approchèrent, et ils mirent les pieds sur leurs cous.
25 Josué leur dit: Ne craignez point et ne vous effrayez point, fortifiez-vous et ayez du courage, car c'est ainsi que l'Éternel traitera tous vos ennemis contre lesquels vous combattez.
26 Après cela, Josué les frappa et les fit mourir; il les pendit à cinq arbres, et ils restèrent pendus aux arbres jusqu'au soir.
27 Vers le coucher du soleil, Josué ordonna qu'on les descendît des arbres, on les jeta dans la caverne où ils s'étaient cachés, et l'on mit à l'entrée de la caverne de grosses pierres, qui y sont demeurées jusqu'à ce jour.
28 Josué prit Makkéda le même jour, et la frappa du tranchant de l'épée; il dévoua par interdit le roi, la ville et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient; il n'en laissa échapper aucun, et il traita le roi de Makkéda comme il avait traité le roi de Jéricho.
29 Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Makkéda à Libna, et il attaqua Libna.
30 L'Éternel la livra aussi, avec son roi, entre les mains d'Israël, et la frappa du tranchant de l'épée, elle et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient; il n'en laissa échapper aucun, et il traita son roi comme il avait traité le roi de Jéricho.
31 Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Libna à Lakis; il campa devant elle, et il l'attaqua.
32 L'Éternel livra Lakis entre les mains d'Israël, qui la prit le second jour, et la frappa du tranchant de l'épée, elle et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient, comme il avait traité Libna.
33 Alors Horam, roi de Guézer, monta pour secourir Lakis. Josué le battit, lui et son peuple, sans laisser échapper personne.
34 Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, passa de Lakis à Églon; ils campèrent devant elle, et ils l'attaquèrent.
35 Ils la prirent le même jour, et la frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, elle et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient; Josué la dévoua par interdit le jour même, comme il avait traité Lakis.
36 Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, monta d'Églon à Hébron, et ils l'attaquèrent.
37 Ils la prirent, et la frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, elle, son roi, toutes les villes qui en dépendaient, et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient; Josué n'en laissa échapper aucun, comme il avait fait à Églon, et il la dévoua par interdit avec tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient.
38 Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, se dirigea sur Debir, et il l'attaqua.
39 Il la prit, elle, son roi, et toutes les villes qui en dépendaient; ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, et ils dévouèrent par interdit tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient, sans en laisser échapper aucun; Josué traita Debir et son roi comme il avait traité Hébron et comme il avait traité Libna et son roi.
40 Josué battit tout le pays, la montagne, le midi, la plaine et les coteaux, et il en battit tous les rois; il ne laissa échapper personne, et il dévoua par interdit tout ce qui respirait, comme l'avait ordonné l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël.
41 Josué les battit de Kadès Barnéa à Gaza, il battit tout le pays de Gosen jusqu'à Gabaon.
42 Josué prit en même temps tous ces rois et leur pays, car l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, combattait pour Israël.
43 Et Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, retourna au camp à Guilgal.
