14 “Now, therefore, revere the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt and serve the Lord.(A) 15 Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living, but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”(B)
16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods, 17 for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went and among all the peoples through whom we passed, 18 and the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”
19 But Joshua said to the people, “You cannot serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins.(C) 20 If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.”(D) 21 And the people said to Joshua, “No, we will serve the Lord!” 22 Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” 23 He said, “Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”(E) 24 The people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and him we will obey.”(F) 25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem.(G)

Les Israélites choisissent d’adorer l’Eternel
14 Maintenant donc, dit Josué, craignez l’Eternel et servez-le de façon irréprochable et avec fidélité. Rejetez les dieux auxquels vos ancêtres rendaient un culte de l’autre côté de l’Euphrate et en Egypte, et rendez un culte à l’Eternel seulement. 15 S’il vous déplaît de servir l’Eternel, alors choisissez aujourd’hui à quels dieux vous voulez rendre un culte : ceux que vos ancêtres adoraient de l’autre côté de l’Euphrate ou ceux des Amoréens dont vous habitez le pays ; quant à moi et à ma famille, nous adorerons l’Eternel.
16 Le peuple répondit : Loin de nous la pensée d’abandonner l’Eternel pour adorer d’autres dieux ! 17 Car c’est l’Eternel notre Dieu qui nous a fait sortir, nous et nos ancêtres, d’Egypte, le pays où nous étions esclaves, il a accompli sous nos yeux des signes extraordinaires, il nous a protégés tout au long du chemin que nous avons parcouru et parmi tous les peuples dont nous avons traversé le territoire. 18 C’est l’Eternel qui a chassé devant nous tous ces peuples, et en particulier les Amoréens qui habitaient la contrée. Oui, nous aussi, nous voulons adorer l’Eternel, car il est notre Dieu.
19 Alors Josué dit au peuple : Vous ne serez pas capables de servir l’Eternel, car c’est un Dieu saint, un Dieu qui ne tolère aucun rival. Il ne tolérera ni vos révoltes ni vos péchés[a].
20 Si vous l’abandonnez pour adorer des dieux étrangers, il se retournera contre vous pour vous faire du mal. Après vous avoir fait tant de bien, il vous consumera.
21 – Non, répondit le peuple. C’est bien l’Eternel que nous voulons adorer !
22 Josué reprit : Vous êtes vous-mêmes témoins contre vous que vous avez vous-mêmes choisi l’Eternel pour l’adorer.
Ils répondirent : Nous en sommes témoins.
23 – Dans ce cas, dit Josué, débarrassez-vous des dieux étrangers qui se trouvent encore au milieu de vous et tournez-vous de tout votre cœur vers l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël.
24 Le peuple répondit : Nous adorerons l’Eternel notre Dieu, et nous lui obéirons.
La conclusion de l’alliance
25 Ce jour-là à Sichem, Josué conclut une alliance avec le peuple et lui donna une Loi et des décrets,

19 Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God;(O) he is a jealous God.(P) He will not forgive(Q) your rebellion(R) and your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord(S) and serve foreign gods, he will turn(T) and bring disaster(U) on you and make an end of you,(V) after he has been good to you.”
21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord.”
22 Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses(W) against yourselves that you have chosen(X) to serve the Lord.”
“Yes, we are witnesses,(Y)” they replied.
23 “Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods(Z) that are among you and yield your hearts(AA) to the Lord, the God of Israel.”
24 And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and obey him.”(AB)
25 On that day Joshua made a covenant(AC) for the people, and there at Shechem(AD) he reaffirmed for them decrees and laws.(AE)

1 Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth.(A)

3 things that we have heard and known,
that our ancestors have told us.(C)
4 We will not hide them from their children;
we will tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord and his might
and the wonders that he has done.(D)
5 He established a decree in Jacob
and appointed a law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach to their children,(E)
6 that the next generation might know them,
the children yet unborn,

13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died,[a] so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.[b](A) 15 For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died.[c] 16 For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first.(B) 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will be with the Lord forever.(C) 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

13 Nous ne voulons pas, frères et sœurs, vous laisser dans l’ignorance au sujet de ceux qui sont décédés, afin que vous ne soyez pas tristes de la même manière que le reste des hommes, qui n’ont pas d’espérance.
14 En effet, puisque nous croyons que Jésus est mort et ressuscité, nous croyons aussi que Dieu ramènera par Jésus et avec lui ceux qui sont morts[a].
15 Car voici ce que nous vous déclarons d’après une parole du Seigneur[b] : nous qui serons restés en vie au moment où le Seigneur viendra, nous ne précéderons pas ceux qui sont morts. 16 En effet, au signal donné, sitôt que la voix de l’archange et le son de la trompette divine retentiront, le Seigneur lui-même descendra du ciel, et ceux qui sont morts unis à Christ ressusciteront en premier lieu. 17 Ensuite, nous qui serons restés en vie à ce moment-là, nous serons enlevés ensemble avec eux, dans les nuées, pour rencontrer le Seigneur dans les airs. Ainsi nous serons pour toujours avec le Seigneur.

25 Ce jour-là, il en sera du royaume des cieux comme de dix jeunes filles qui prirent leurs lampes et s’en allèrent à la rencontre du marié. 2 Cinq d’entre elles étaient insensées, les cinq autres étaient avisées : 3 les jeunes filles insensées prirent leurs lampes sans penser à emporter de réserve d’huile, 4 mais celles qui étaient avisées prirent, avec leurs lampes, des flacons contenant de l’huile.
5 Comme le marié se faisait attendre, elles s’assoupirent toutes et finirent par céder au sommeil. 6 A minuit, un cri retentit : « Voici l’époux ! Allez à sa rencontre ! »
7 Toutes les jeunes filles se levèrent et préparèrent leurs lampes. 8 Alors les jeunes filles insensées s’adressèrent à celles qui étaient avisées : « Donnez-nous de votre huile, car nos lampes sont en train de s’éteindre. »
9 Mais celles-ci leur répondirent : « Non ! Il n’y en aurait jamais assez pour nous et pour vous. Courez plutôt vous en acheter chez le marchand. »
10 Elles partirent en chercher. Pendant ce temps, le marié arriva : celles qui étaient prêtes entrèrent avec lui dans la salle de noces, et l’on ferma la porte.
11 Plus tard, les autres jeunes filles arrivèrent à leur tour ; mais elles eurent beau crier : « Seigneur, Seigneur, ouvre-nous ! » 12 Il leur répondit : « Vraiment, je vous l’assure : je ne sais pas qui vous êtes. »
13 C’est pourquoi, ajouta Jésus, tenez-vous en éveil, car vous ne savez ni le jour, ni l’heure de ma venue.
