The Land of Reuben

15 (A)And Moses had given to the tribe of the children of Reuben an inheritance according to their families. 16 Their territory was (B)from Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, (C)and the city that is in the midst of the ravine, (D)and all the plain by Medeba; 17 (E)Heshbon and all its cities that are in the plain: Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, 18 (F)Jahaza, Kedemoth, Mephaath, 19 (G)Kirjathaim, (H)Sibmah, Zereth Shahar on the mountain of the valley, 20 Beth Peor, (I)the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— 21 (J)all the cities of the plain and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, (K)whom Moses had struck (L)with the princes of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, who were princes of Sihon dwelling in the country. 22 The children of Israel also killed with the sword (M)Balaam the son of Beor, the [a]soothsayer, among those who were killed by them. 23 And the border of the children of Reuben was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the cities and their villages.

The Land of Gad

24 (N)Moses also had given an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad according to their families. 25 (O)Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, (P)and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, which is before (Q)Rabbah, 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir, 27 and in the valley (R)Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, (S)Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan as its border, as far as the edge (T)of the [b]Sea of Chinnereth, on the other side of the Jordan eastward. 28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and their villages.

Half the Tribe of Manasseh (East)

29 (U)Moses also had given an inheritance to half the tribe of Manasseh; it was for half the tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families: 30 Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and (V)all the towns of Jair which are in Bashan, sixty cities; 31 half of Gilead, and (W)Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the (X)children of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Machir according to their families.

32 These are the areas which Moses had [c]distributed as an inheritance in the plains of Moab on the other side of the Jordan, by Jericho eastward. 33 (Y)But to the tribe of Levi Moses had given no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel was their inheritance, (Z)as He had said to them.

The Land Divided West of the Jordan

14 These are the areas which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, (AA)which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel distributed as an inheritance to them. Their inheritance was (AB)by lot, as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe. (AC)For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe on the other side of the Jordan; but to the Levites he had given no inheritance among them. For (AD)the children of Joseph were two tribes: Manasseh and Ephraim. And they gave no part to the Levites in the land, except (AE)cities to dwell in, with their common-lands for their livestock and their property. (AF)As the Lord had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did; and they divided the land.

15 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Reuben, according to its clans:

16 The territory from Aroer(A) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and the whole plateau past Medeba(B) 17 to Heshbon and all its towns on the plateau,(C) including Dibon,(D) Bamoth Baal,(E) Beth Baal Meon,(F) 18 Jahaz,(G) Kedemoth,(H) Mephaath,(I) 19 Kiriathaim,(J) Sibmah,(K) Zereth Shahar on the hill in the valley, 20 Beth Peor,(L) the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— 21 all the towns on the plateau(M) and the entire realm of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled at Heshbon. Moses had defeated him and the Midianite chiefs,(N) Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba(O)—princes allied with Sihon—who lived in that country. 22 In addition to those slain in battle, the Israelites had put to the sword Balaam son of Beor,(P) who practiced divination.(Q) 23 The boundary of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Reubenites, according to their clans.(R)

24 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Gad, according to its clans:

25 The territory of Jazer,(S) all the towns of Gilead(T) and half the Ammonite country as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;(U) 26 and from Heshbon(V) to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim(W) to the territory of Debir;(X) 27 and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah,(Y) Sukkoth(Z) and Zaphon(AA) with the rest of the realm of Sihon king of Heshbon (the east side of the Jordan, the territory up to the end of the Sea of Galilee[a](AB)). 28 These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Gadites,(AC) according to their clans.

29 This is what Moses had given to the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half the family of the descendants of Manasseh, according to its clans:

30 The territory extending from Mahanaim(AD) and including all of Bashan,(AE) the entire realm of Og king of Bashan(AF)—all the settlements of Jair(AG) in Bashan, sixty towns, 31 half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei (the royal cities of Og in Bashan).(AH) This was for the descendants of Makir(AI) son of Manasseh—for half of the sons of Makir, according to their clans.(AJ)

32 This is the inheritance Moses had given when he was in the plains of Moab(AK) across the Jordan east of Jericho.(AL) 33 But to the tribe of Levi, Moses had given no inheritance;(AM) the Lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance,(AN) as he promised them.(AO)

Division of the Land West of the Jordan

14 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance(AP) in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar(AQ) the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel(AR) allotted(AS) to them.(AT) Their inheritances were assigned by lot(AU) to the nine and a half tribes,(AV) as the Lord had commanded through Moses. Moses had granted the two and a half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan(AW) but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,(AX) for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim.(AY) The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.(AZ) So the Israelites divided the land, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.(BA)

King Og Defeated(A)

“Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan; and (B)Og king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle (C)at Edrei. And the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have delivered him and all his people and his land into your hand; you shall do to him as you did to (D)Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.’

“So the Lord our God also delivered into our hands Og king of Bashan, with all his people, and we [a]attacked him until he had no survivors remaining. And we took all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we did not take from them: sixty cities, (E)all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many rural towns. And we utterly destroyed them, as we did to Sihon king (F)of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children of every city. But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as booty for ourselves.

“And at that time we took the (G)land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were on this side of the Jordan, from the River Arnon to Mount (H)Hermon (the Sidonians call (I)Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir), 10 (J)all the cities of the plain, all Gilead, and (K)all Bashan, as far as Salcah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

11 (L)“For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of (M)the [b]giants. Indeed his bedstead was an iron bedstead. (Is it not in (N)Rabbah of the people of Ammon?) Nine cubits is its length and four cubits its width, according to the standard cubit.

The Land East of the Jordan Divided(O)

12 “And this (P)land, which we possessed at that time, (Q)from Aroer, which is by the River Arnon, and half the mountains of Gilead and (R)its cities, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites. 13 (S)The rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh. (All the region of Argob, with all Bashan, was called the land of the [c]giants. 14 (T)Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, (U)as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and (V)called Bashan after his own name, [d]Havoth Jair, to this day.)

15 “Also I gave (W)Gilead to Machir. 16 And to the Reubenites (X)and the Gadites I gave from Gilead as far as the River Arnon, the middle of the river as the border, as far as the River Jabbok, (Y)the border of the people of Ammon; 17 the plain also, with the Jordan as the border, from Chinnereth (Z)as far as the east side of the Sea of the Arabah (AA)(the Salt Sea), below the slopes of Pisgah.

Defeat of Og King of Bashan

Next we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan(A) with his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei.(B) The Lord said to me, “Do not be afraid(C) of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.”

So the Lord our God also gave into our hands Og king of Bashan and all his army. We struck them down,(D) leaving no survivors.(E) At that time we took all his cities.(F) There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them—the whole region of Argob, Og’s kingdom(G) in Bashan.(H) All these cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were also a great many unwalled villages. We completely destroyed[a] them, as we had done with Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying[b](I) every city—men, women and children. But all the livestock(J) and the plunder from their cities we carried off for ourselves.

So at that time we took from these two kings of the Amorites(K) the territory east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Gorge as far as Mount Hermon.(L) (Hermon is called Sirion(M) by the Sidonians; the Amorites call it Senir.)(N) 10 We took all the towns on the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salekah(O) and Edrei, towns of Og’s kingdom in Bashan. 11 (Og king of Bashan was the last of the Rephaites.(P) His bed was decorated with iron and was more than nine cubits long and four cubits wide.[c] It is still in Rabbah(Q) of the Ammonites.)

Division of the Land

12 Of the land that we took over at that time, I gave the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory north of Aroer(R) by the Arnon Gorge, including half the hill country of Gilead, together with its towns. 13 The rest of Gilead and also all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh.(S) (The whole region of Argob in Bashan used to be known as a land of the Rephaites.(T) 14 Jair,(U) a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maakathites;(V) it was named(W) after him, so that to this day Bashan is called Havvoth Jair.[d]) 15 And I gave Gilead to Makir.(X) 16 But to the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the territory extending from Gilead down to the Arnon Gorge (the middle of the gorge being the border) and out to the Jabbok River,(Y) which is the border of the Ammonites. 17 Its western border was the Jordan in the Arabah,(Z) from Kinnereth(AA) to the Sea of the Arabah(AB) (that is, the Dead Sea(AC)), below the slopes of Pisgah.
