The Inheritance East of the Jordan

With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh, the Reubenites and Gadites had received the inheritance Moses gave them beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses the Lord’s servant had given them:(A)

From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley,(B) all the Medeba plateau as far as Dibon, 10 and all the cities of King Sihon of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, to the border of the Ammonites; 11 also Gilead(C) and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan to Salecah— 12 the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei; he was one of the remaining Rephaim.

Moses struck them down and drove them out,(D) 13 but the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites and Maacathites.(E) So Geshur and Maacath still live in Israel today.(F)

14 He did not, however, give any inheritance to the tribe of Levi. This was their inheritance, just as he had promised: the food offerings made to the Lord, the God of Israel.(G)

Reuben’s Inheritance

15 To the tribe of Reuben’s descendants by their clans, Moses gave 16 this as their territory:

From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, the whole plateau as far as[a] Medeba, 17 with Heshbon and all its cities on the plateau—Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon, 18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,(H) 19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley,(I) 20 Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth— 21 all the cities of the plateau, and all the kingdom of King Sihon of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon. Moses had killed him and the chiefs of Midian—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the princes of Sihon who lived in the land.(J) 22 Along with those the Israelites put to death, they also killed the diviner, Balaam son of Beor, with the sword.

23 The border of the Reubenites was the Jordan and its plain. This was the inheritance of the Reubenites by their clans, with the cities and their settlements.

Gad’s Inheritance

24 To the tribe of the Gadites by their clans, Moses gave 25 this as their territory:

Jazer and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites to Aroer, near Rabbah; 26 from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir;[b] 27 in the valley: Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon—the rest of the kingdom of King Sihon of Heshbon. Their land also included the Jordan and its territory as far as the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth[c] on the east side of the Jordan.

28 This was the inheritance of the Gadites by their clans, with the cities and their settlements.

East Manasseh’s Inheritance

29 And to half the tribe of Manasseh (that is, to half the tribe of Manasseh’s descendants by their clans) Moses gave 30 this as their territory:

From Mahanaim through all Bashan—all the kingdom of King Og of Bashan, including all of Jair’s Villages[d](K) that are in Bashan—sixty cities. 31 But half of Gilead, and Og’s royal cities in Bashan—Ashtaroth and Edrei—are for the descendants of Machir son of Manasseh (that is, half the descendants of Machir by their clans).

32 These were the portions Moses gave them on the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan east of Jericho. 33 But Moses did not give a portion to the tribe of Levi. The Lord, the God of Israel, was their inheritance, just as he had promised them.(L)

The Territory East of the Jordan

With the other half-tribe of Manasseh[a] the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them:(A) from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Wadi Arnon, and the town that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland from[b] Medeba as far as Dibon;(B) 10 and all the cities of King Sihon of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites;(C) 11 and Gilead, and the region of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan to Salecah; 12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of the survivors of the Rephaim); these Moses had defeated and driven out.(D) 13 Yet the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, but Geshur and Maacath live within Israel to this day.

14 To the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance; the offerings by fire[c] to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to them.(E)

The Territory of Reuben

15 Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the Reubenites according to their families. 16 Their territory was from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Wadi Arnon, and the town that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by Medeba;(F) 17 with Heshbon, and all its towns that are in the tableland; Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, 18 and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, 19 and Kiriathaim, and Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, 20 and Beth-peor, and the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth, 21 that is, all the towns of the tableland, and all the kingdom of King Sihon of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses defeated with the leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, as princes of Sihon, who lived in the land.(G) 22 Along with the rest of those they put to death, the Israelites also put to the sword Balaam son of Beor, who practiced divination.(H) 23 And the border of the Reubenites was the Jordan and its banks. This was the inheritance of the Reubenites according to their families, with their towns and villages.

The Territory of Gad

24 Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of the Gadites, according to their families. 25 Their territory was Jazer, and all the towns of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, to Aroer, which is near Rabbah,(I) 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the territory of Debir,[d] 27 and in the valley Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of King Sihon of Heshbon, the Jordan and its banks, as far as the lower end of the Sea of Chinnereth, eastward beyond the Jordan.(J) 28 This is the inheritance of the Gadites according to their families, with their towns and villages.

The Territory of the Half-Tribe of Manasseh (East)

29 Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh; it was allotted to the half-tribe of the Manassites according to their families. 30 Their territory extended from Mahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of King Og of Bashan, and all the settlements of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty towns,(K) 31 and half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the towns of the kingdom of Og in Bashan; these were allotted to the people of Machir son of Manasseh according to their families, for half the Machirites.

32 These are the inheritances that Moses distributed in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho. 33 But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, as he said to them.(L)

Division of the Land East of the Jordan

The other half of Manasseh,[a] the Reubenites and the Gadites had received the inheritance that Moses had given them east of the Jordan, as he, the servant of the Lord, had assigned(A) it to them.(B)

It extended from Aroer(C) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and included the whole plateau(D) of Medeba as far as Dibon,(E) 10 and all the towns of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon,(F) out to the border of the Ammonites.(G) 11 It also included Gilead,(H) the territory of the people of Geshur and Maakah, all of Mount Hermon and all Bashan as far as Salekah(I) 12 that is, the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan,(J) who had reigned in Ashtaroth(K) and Edrei.(L) (He was the last of the Rephaites.(M)) Moses had defeated them and taken over their land.(N) 13 But the Israelites did not drive out the people of Geshur(O) and Maakah,(P) so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day.(Q)

14 But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance, since the food offerings presented to the Lord, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he promised them.(R)

15 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Reuben, according to its clans:

16 The territory from Aroer(S) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and the whole plateau past Medeba(T) 17 to Heshbon and all its towns on the plateau,(U) including Dibon,(V) Bamoth Baal,(W) Beth Baal Meon,(X) 18 Jahaz,(Y) Kedemoth,(Z) Mephaath,(AA) 19 Kiriathaim,(AB) Sibmah,(AC) Zereth Shahar on the hill in the valley, 20 Beth Peor,(AD) the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— 21 all the towns on the plateau(AE) and the entire realm of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled at Heshbon. Moses had defeated him and the Midianite chiefs,(AF) Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba(AG)—princes allied with Sihon—who lived in that country. 22 In addition to those slain in battle, the Israelites had put to the sword Balaam son of Beor,(AH) who practiced divination.(AI) 23 The boundary of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Reubenites, according to their clans.(AJ)

24 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Gad, according to its clans:

25 The territory of Jazer,(AK) all the towns of Gilead(AL) and half the Ammonite country as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;(AM) 26 and from Heshbon(AN) to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim(AO) to the territory of Debir;(AP) 27 and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah,(AQ) Sukkoth(AR) and Zaphon(AS) with the rest of the realm of Sihon king of Heshbon (the east side of the Jordan, the territory up to the end of the Sea of Galilee[b](AT)). 28 These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Gadites,(AU) according to their clans.

29 This is what Moses had given to the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half the family of the descendants of Manasseh, according to its clans:

30 The territory extending from Mahanaim(AV) and including all of Bashan,(AW) the entire realm of Og king of Bashan(AX)—all the settlements of Jair(AY) in Bashan, sixty towns, 31 half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei (the royal cities of Og in Bashan).(AZ) This was for the descendants of Makir(BA) son of Manasseh—for half of the sons of Makir, according to their clans.(BB)

32 This is the inheritance Moses had given when he was in the plains of Moab(BC) across the Jordan east of Jericho.(BD) 33 But to the tribe of Levi, Moses had given no inheritance;(BE) the Lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance,(BF) as he promised them.(BG)
