Kings Defeated by Moses

12 Now these are the kings of the land whom the people of Israel defeated and took possession of their land beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise, from (A)the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon, with all (B)the Arabah eastward: (C)Sihon king of the Amorites who lived at Heshbon and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and (D)from the middle of the valley as far as the (E)river Jabbok, the boundary of the Ammonites, that is, half of Gilead, and (F)the Arabah (G)to the Sea of Chinneroth eastward, and in the direction of Beth-jeshimoth, to the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, southward to the foot of (H)the slopes of Pisgah; and (I)Og[a] king of Bashan, one of the remnant of (J)the Rephaim, (K)who lived at Ashtaroth and at Edrei and ruled over (L)Mount Hermon and (M)Salecah and all Bashan (N)to the boundary of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and over half of Gilead to the boundary of Sihon king of Heshbon. (O)Moses, the servant of the Lord, and the people of Israel defeated them. And Moses the servant of the Lord (P)gave their land for a possession to the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

Kings Defeated by Joshua

And these are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the people of Israel defeated on the west side of the Jordan, from Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon to (Q)Mount Halak, that rises toward Seir (and Joshua gave their land to the tribes of Israel as a possession (R)according to their allotments, (S)in the hill country, in the lowland, in the Arabah, in the slopes, in the wilderness, and in the Negeb, the land of (T)the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites): (U)the king of Jericho, one; (V)the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one; 10 (W)the king of Jerusalem, one; (X)the king of Hebron, one; 11 (Y)the king of Jarmuth, one; (Z)the king of Lachish, one; 12 (AA)the king of Eglon, one; (AB)the king of Gezer, one; 13 (AC)the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one; 14 the king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one; 15 (AD)the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one; 16 (AE)the king of Makkedah, one; (AF)the king of Bethel, one; 17 the king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one; 18 the king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one; 19 (AG)the king of Madon, one; (AH)the king of Hazor, one; 20 (AI)the king of Shimron-meron, one; (AJ)the king of Achshaph, one; 21 (AK)the king of Taanach, one; (AL)the king of Megiddo, one; 22 the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one; 23 (AM)the king of Dor in (AN)Naphath-dor, one; the king of Goiim in Galilee,[b] one; 24 the king of Tirzah, one: in all, thirty-one kings.

Land Still to Be Conquered

13 Now Joshua (AO)was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land (AP)to possess. (AQ)This is the land that yet remains: all the (AR)regions of the Philistines, and all those of the Geshurites (from the (AS)Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; (AT)there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of (AU)the Avvim, in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of (AV)the Amorites, and the land of the (AW)Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from (AX)Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to (AY)Lebo-hamath, all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to (AZ)Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians. I myself will drive (BA)them out from before the people of Israel. Only (BB)allot the land to Israel (BC)for an inheritance, as I have commanded you. Now therefore (BD)divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Inheritance East of the Jordan

With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh[c] the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, (BE)which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them: (BF)from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and (BG)all the tableland of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 (BH)and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites; 11 and Gilead, and the (BI)region of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and (BJ)all Bashan to Salecah; 12 (BK)all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of (BL)the remnant of the Rephaim); (BM)these Moses had struck and driven out. 13 (BN)Yet the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day.

14 (BO)To the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to him.

15 And Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the people of Reuben according to their clans. 16 So their territory was from Aroer, (BP)which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by (BQ)Medeba; 17 with Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the tableland; (BR)Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, 18 (BS)and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, 19 and (BT)Kiriathaim, and (BU)Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, 20 and (BV)Beth-peor, and (BW)the slopes of Pisgah, and (BX)Beth-jeshimoth, 21 that is, (BY)all the cities of the tableland, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, (BZ)whom Moses defeated with (CA)the leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land. 22 (CB)Balaam also, the son of Beor, the one who practiced divination, was killed with the sword by the people of Israel among the rest of their slain. 23 And the border of the people of Reuben was the Jordan as a boundary. This was the inheritance of the people of Reuben, according to their clans with their cities and villages.

24 Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of Gad, to the people of Gad, according to their clans. 25 (CC)Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, to Aroer, which is east of (CD)Rabbah, 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from (CE)Mahanaim to the territory of Debir,[d] 27 and in the valley Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, (CF)Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, having the Jordan as a boundary, to the lower end of the Sea of (CG)Chinnereth, eastward beyond the Jordan. 28 This is the inheritance of the people of Gad according to their clans, with their cities and villages.

29 And Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was allotted to the half-tribe of the people of Manasseh according to their clans. 30 Their region extended from (CH)Mahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all (CI)the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, 31 and half Gilead, and (CJ)Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. These were allotted to the people of (CK)Machir the son of Manasseh for the half of the people of Machir according to their clans.

32 These are the inheritances that Moses distributed (CL)in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho. 33 (CM)But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, (CN)just as he said to them.

The Inheritance West of the Jordan

14 These are the inheritances that the people of Israel received in the land of Canaan, which (CO)Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the people of Israel gave them to inherit. Their inheritance was (CP)by lot, just as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses for the nine and one-half tribes. (CQ)For Moses had given an inheritance to the two and one-half tribes beyond the Jordan, (CR)but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them. For (CS)the people of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion was given to the Levites in the land, but only cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their substance. The people of Israel did (CT)as the Lord commanded Moses; they allotted the land.

Caleb's Request and Inheritance

Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the (CU)Kenizzite said to him, “You know (CV)what the Lord said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord (CW)sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. But (CX)my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the Lord my God. And Moses swore on that day, saying, (CY)‘Surely the land (CZ)on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’ 10 And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, (DA)just as he said, these (DB)forty-five years since the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am this day (DC)eighty-five years old. 11 (DD)I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war and (DE)for going and coming. 12 So now give me this hill country of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the (DF)Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the Lord said.”

13 Then Joshua (DG)blessed him, and he gave (DH)Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. 14 Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, (DI)because he wholly followed the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 (DJ)Now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba.[e] (Arba[f] was the greatest man among the Anakim.) (DK)And the land had rest from war.

The Allotment for Judah

15 The allotment for the tribe of the people of Judah according to their clans reached southward (DL)to the boundary of Edom, to (DM)the wilderness of Zin at the farthest south. And their south boundary ran from the end of the (DN)Salt Sea, from the bay that faces southward. It goes out southward of (DO)the ascent of Akrabbim, passes along to Zin, and goes up south of Kadesh-barnea, along by Hezron, up to Addar, turns about to Karka, passes along to Azmon, goes out by (DP)the Brook of Egypt, and comes to its end at the sea. This shall be your south boundary. And the east boundary is the (DQ)Salt Sea, to the mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary on the north side runs from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary goes up to (DR)Beth-hoglah and passes along north of (DS)Beth-arabah. And the boundary goes up to (DT)the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. And the boundary goes up to Debir from (DU)the Valley of Achor, and so northward, turning toward Gilgal, which is opposite (DV)the ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley. And the boundary passes along to the waters of (DW)En-shemesh and ends at (DX)En-rogel. Then the boundary goes up by (DY)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom at the southern shoulder of the Jebusite ((DZ)that is, Jerusalem). And the boundary goes up to the top of the mountain that lies over against the Valley of Hinnom, on the west, at the northern end of the Valley (EA)of Rephaim. Then the boundary extends from the top of the mountain (EB)to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and from there to the cities of Mount Ephron. Then the boundary bends around to Baalah ((EC)that is, Kiriath-jearim). 10 And the boundary circles west of Baalah to Mount Seir, passes along to the northern shoulder of Mount Jearim (that is, Chesalon), and goes down to (ED)Beth-shemesh and passes along by (EE)Timnah. 11 The boundary goes out (EF)to the shoulder of the hill north of Ekron, then the boundary bends around to Shikkeron and passes along to Mount (EG)Baalah and goes out to Jabneel. Then the boundary comes to an end at the sea. 12 And the west boundary was (EH)the Great Sea with its coastline. This is the boundary around the people of Judah according to their clans.

13 According to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, he gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the people of Judah, (EI)Kiriath-arba, that is, (EJ)Hebron (Arba was the father of Anak). 14 And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak, (EK)Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, the descendants of Anak. 15 And he went up from there against the inhabitants of Debir. (EL)Now the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher. 16 And Caleb said, “Whoever strikes Kiriath-sepher and captures it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife.” 17 (EM)And Othniel the son of Kenaz, (EN)the brother of Caleb, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife. 18 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she got off her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” 19 She said to him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have given me the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.” And he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

20 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the people of Judah according to their clans. 21 The cities belonging to the tribe of the people of Judah in the extreme south, toward the boundary of Edom, were Kabzeel, (EO)Eder, Jagur, 22 Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah, 23 Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan, 24 (EP)Ziph, Telem, Bealoth, 25 Hazor-hadattah, Kerioth-hezron (that is, Hazor), 26 Amam, Shema, Moladah, 27 Hazar-gaddah, Heshmon, Beth-pelet, 28 Hazar-shual, (EQ)Beersheba, Biziothiah, 29 Baalah, Iim, Ezem, 30 Eltolad, Chesil, Hormah, 31 (ER)Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah, 32 Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain, and Rimmon: in all, twenty-nine cities with their villages.

33 And in the lowland, (ES)Eshtaol, Zorah, Ashnah, 34 Zanoah, En-gannim, Tappuah, Enam, 35 (ET)Jarmuth, (EU)Adullam, (EV)Socoh, (EW)Azekah, 36 Shaaraim, Adithaim, Gederah, Gederothaim: fourteen cities with their villages.

37 Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal-gad, 38 Dilean, Mizpeh, Joktheel, 39 (EX)Lachish, Bozkath, (EY)Eglon, 40 Cabbon, Lahmam, Chitlish, 41 Gederoth, Beth-dagon, Naamah, and (EZ)Makkedah: sixteen cities with their villages.

42 (FA)Libnah, Ether, Ashan, 43 Iphtah, Ashnah, Nezib, 44 (FB)Keilah, Achzib, and Mareshah: nine cities with their villages.

45 (FC)Ekron, with its towns and its villages; 46 from Ekron to the sea, all that were by the side of Ashdod, with their villages.

47 (FD)Ashdod, its towns and its villages; (FE)Gaza, its towns and its villages; to (FF)the Brook of Egypt, and (FG)the Great Sea with its coastline.

48 And in the hill country, Shamir, Jattir, Socoh, 49 Dannah, Kiriath-sannah ((FH)that is, Debir), 50 Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim, 51 (FI)Goshen, Holon, and (FJ)Giloh: eleven cities with their villages.

52 Arab, Dumah, Eshan, 53 Janim, Beth-tappuah, Aphekah, 54 Humtah, (FK)Kiriath-arba (that is, (FL)Hebron), and Zior: nine cities with their villages.

55 (FM)Maon, (FN)Carmel, (FO)Ziph, Juttah, 56 Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah, 57 Kain, Gibeah, and (FP)Timnah: ten cities with their villages.

58 Halhul, Beth-zur, Gedor, 59 Maarath, Beth-anoth, and Eltekon: six cities with their villages.

60 (FQ)Kiriath-baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), and Rabbah: two cities with their villages.

61 In the wilderness, (FR)Beth-arabah, Middin, Secacah, 62 Nibshan, the City of Salt, and (FS)Engedi: six cities with their villages.

63 But the (FT)Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, (FU)the people of Judah could not drive out, (FV)so the Jebusites dwell with the people of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

The Allotment for Ephraim and Manasseh

16 The allotment of the people of Joseph went from the Jordan by Jericho, east of the waters of Jericho, (FW)into the wilderness, going up from Jericho into the hill country to Bethel. Then (FX)going from Bethel to Luz, it passes along to Ataroth, the territory of the Archites. Then it goes down westward to the territory of the Japhletites, as far as the territory of Lower (FY)Beth-horon, then to (FZ)Gezer, and it ends at the sea.

(GA)The people of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, received their inheritance.

The territory of the people of Ephraim by their clans was as follows: the boundary of their inheritance on the east was (GB)Ataroth-addar as far as Upper Beth-horon, and the boundary goes from there to the sea. On the north is (GC)Michmethath. Then on the east the boundary turns around toward Taanath-shiloh and passes along beyond it on the east to Janoah, then it goes down from Janoah to Ataroth and (GD)to Naarah, and touches Jericho, ending at the Jordan. From (GE)Tappuah the boundary goes westward to the brook Kanah and ends at the sea. Such is the inheritance of the tribe of the people of Ephraim by their clans, together with (GF)the towns that were set apart for the people of Ephraim within the inheritance of the Manassites, all those towns with their villages. 10 However, (GG)they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites have lived in the midst of Ephraim to this day but have been made (GH)to do forced labor.

17 Then allotment was made to the people of Manasseh, for he was (GI)the firstborn of Joseph. To (GJ)Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, (GK)were allotted Gilead and Bashan, because he was a man of war. And allotments were made (GL)to the rest of the people of Manasseh by their clans, Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida. These were the male descendants of Manasseh the son of Joseph, by their clans.

Now (GM)Zelophehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters, and these are the names of his daughters: (GN)Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. They approached (GO)Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the leaders and said, (GP)“The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance along with our brothers.” So according to the mouth of the Lord he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father. Thus there fell to Manasseh ten portions, besides (GQ)the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is on the other side of the Jordan, because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance along with his sons. The land of Gilead was allotted to the rest of the people of Manasseh.

The territory of Manasseh reached from Asher to (GR)Michmethath, which is east of Shechem. Then the boundary goes along southward to the inhabitants of En-tappuah. The land of (GS)Tappuah belonged to Manasseh, but the town of Tappuah on the boundary of Manasseh belonged to the people of Ephraim. (GT)Then the boundary went down to the brook Kanah. These cities, to the south of the brook, among the cities of Manasseh, belong to Ephraim. Then the boundary of Manasseh goes on the north side of the brook and ends at the sea, 10 the land to the south being Ephraim's and that to the north being Manasseh's, with the sea forming its boundary. On the north Asher is reached, and on the east Issachar. 11 Also in Issachar and in Asher (GU)Manasseh had Beth-shean and its villages, and Ibleam and its villages, and the inhabitants of (GV)Dor and its villages, and the inhabitants of En-dor and its villages, and the inhabitants of (GW)Taanach and its villages, and the inhabitants of (GX)Megiddo and its villages; (GY)the third is Naphath.[g] 12 (GZ)Yet the people of Manasseh could not take possession of those cities, but the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. 13 Now when the people of Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites (HA)to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.

14 Then (HB)the people of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, “Why have you given me but (HC)one lot and one portion as an inheritance, although I am (HD)a numerous people, since all along the Lord has blessed me?” 15 And Joshua said to them, “If you are a numerous people, go up by yourselves to the forest, and there clear ground for yourselves in the land of the Perizzites and (HE)the Rephaim, since (HF)the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.” 16 The people of Joseph said, “The hill country is not enough for us. Yet all the Canaanites who dwell in the plain have (HG)chariots of iron, both those in Beth-shean and its villages and those in (HH)the Valley of Jezreel.” 17 Then Joshua said to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh, “You are a numerous people and have great power. You shall not have one allotment only, 18 but the hill country shall be yours, for though it is a forest, you shall clear it and possess it to its farthest borders. For you shall drive out the Canaanites, (HI)though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong.”

Land Still to Be Taken

13 When Joshua had grown old,(BC) the Lord said to him, “You are now very old, and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over.

“This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines(BD) and Geshurites,(BE) from the Shihor River(BF) on the east of Egypt to the territory of Ekron(BG) on the north, all of it counted as Canaanite though held by the five Philistine rulers(BH) in Gaza, Ashdod,(BI) Ashkelon,(BJ) Gath and Ekron; the territory of the Avvites(BK) on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, from Arah of the Sidonians as far as Aphek(BL) and the border of the Amorites;(BM) the area of Byblos;(BN) and all Lebanon(BO) to the east, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon(BP) to Lebo Hamath.(BQ)

“As for all the inhabitants of the mountain regions from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim,(BR) that is, all the Sidonians, I myself will drive them out(BS) before the Israelites. Be sure to allocate this land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have instructed you,(BT) and divide it as an inheritance(BU) among the nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh.”

Division of the Land East of the Jordan

The other half of Manasseh,[b] the Reubenites and the Gadites had received the inheritance that Moses had given them east of the Jordan, as he, the servant of the Lord, had assigned(BV) it to them.(BW)

It extended from Aroer(BX) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and included the whole plateau(BY) of Medeba as far as Dibon,(BZ) 10 and all the towns of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon,(CA) out to the border of the Ammonites.(CB) 11 It also included Gilead,(CC) the territory of the people of Geshur and Maakah, all of Mount Hermon and all Bashan as far as Salekah(CD) 12 that is, the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan,(CE) who had reigned in Ashtaroth(CF) and Edrei.(CG) (He was the last of the Rephaites.(CH)) Moses had defeated them and taken over their land.(CI) 13 But the Israelites did not drive out the people of Geshur(CJ) and Maakah,(CK) so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day.(CL)

14 But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance, since the food offerings presented to the Lord, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he promised them.(CM)

15 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Reuben, according to its clans:

16 The territory from Aroer(CN) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and the whole plateau past Medeba(CO) 17 to Heshbon and all its towns on the plateau,(CP) including Dibon,(CQ) Bamoth Baal,(CR) Beth Baal Meon,(CS) 18 Jahaz,(CT) Kedemoth,(CU) Mephaath,(CV) 19 Kiriathaim,(CW) Sibmah,(CX) Zereth Shahar on the hill in the valley, 20 Beth Peor,(CY) the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— 21 all the towns on the plateau(CZ) and the entire realm of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled at Heshbon. Moses had defeated him and the Midianite chiefs,(DA) Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba(DB)—princes allied with Sihon—who lived in that country. 22 In addition to those slain in battle, the Israelites had put to the sword Balaam son of Beor,(DC) who practiced divination.(DD) 23 The boundary of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Reubenites, according to their clans.(DE)

24 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Gad, according to its clans:

25 The territory of Jazer,(DF) all the towns of Gilead(DG) and half the Ammonite country as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;(DH) 26 and from Heshbon(DI) to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim(DJ) to the territory of Debir;(DK) 27 and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah,(DL) Sukkoth(DM) and Zaphon(DN) with the rest of the realm of Sihon king of Heshbon (the east side of the Jordan, the territory up to the end of the Sea of Galilee[c](DO)). 28 These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Gadites,(DP) according to their clans.

29 This is what Moses had given to the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half the family of the descendants of Manasseh, according to its clans:

30 The territory extending from Mahanaim(DQ) and including all of Bashan,(DR) the entire realm of Og king of Bashan(DS)—all the settlements of Jair(DT) in Bashan, sixty towns, 31 half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei (the royal cities of Og in Bashan).(DU) This was for the descendants of Makir(DV) son of Manasseh—for half of the sons of Makir, according to their clans.(DW)

32 This is the inheritance Moses had given when he was in the plains of Moab(DX) across the Jordan east of Jericho.(DY) 33 But to the tribe of Levi, Moses had given no inheritance;(DZ) the Lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance,(EA) as he promised them.(EB)

Division of the Land West of the Jordan

14 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance(EC) in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar(ED) the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel(EE) allotted(EF) to them.(EG) Their inheritances were assigned by lot(EH) to the nine and a half tribes,(EI) as the Lord had commanded through Moses. Moses had granted the two and a half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan(EJ) but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,(EK) for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim.(EL) The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.(EM) So the Israelites divided the land, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.(EN)

Allotment for Caleb

Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal,(EO) and Caleb son of Jephunneh(EP) the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God(EQ) at Kadesh Barnea(ER) about you and me.(ES) I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea(ET) to explore the land.(EU) And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,(EV) but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear.(EW) I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.(EX) So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance(EY) and that of your children(EZ) forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’[d]

10 “Now then, just as the Lord promised,(FA) he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved(FB) about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!(FC) 11 I am still as strong(FD) today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous(FE) to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day.(FF) You yourself heard then that the Anakites(FG) were there and their cities were large and fortified,(FH) but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”

13 Then Joshua blessed(FI) Caleb son of Jephunneh(FJ) and gave him Hebron(FK) as his inheritance.(FL) 14 So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.(FM) 15 (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba(FN) after Arba,(FO) who was the greatest man among the Anakites.)

Then the land had rest(FP) from war.

Allotment for Judah(FQ)

15 The allotment for the tribe of Judah, according to its clans, extended down to the territory of Edom,(FR) to the Desert of Zin(FS) in the extreme south.(FT)

Their southern boundary started from the bay at the southern end of the Dead Sea,(FU) crossed south of Scorpion Pass,(FV) continued on to Zin and went over to the south of Kadesh Barnea.(FW) Then it ran past Hezron up to Addar and curved around to Karka. It then passed along to Azmon(FX) and joined the Wadi of Egypt,(FY) ending at the Mediterranean Sea. This is their[e] southern boundary.

The eastern boundary(FZ) is the Dead Sea(GA) as far as the mouth of the Jordan.

The northern boundary(GB) started from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan, went up to Beth Hoglah(GC) and continued north of Beth Arabah(GD) to the Stone of Bohan(GE) son of Reuben. The boundary then went up to Debir(GF) from the Valley of Achor(GG) and turned north to Gilgal,(GH) which faces the Pass of Adummim south of the gorge. It continued along to the waters of En Shemesh(GI) and came out at En Rogel.(GJ) Then it ran up the Valley of Ben Hinnom(GK) along the southern slope of the Jebusite(GL) city (that is, Jerusalem(GM)). From there it climbed to the top of the hill west of the Hinnom Valley(GN) at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim.(GO) From the hilltop the boundary headed toward the spring of the waters of Nephtoah,(GP) came out at the towns of Mount Ephron and went down toward Baalah(GQ) (that is, Kiriath Jearim).(GR) 10 Then it curved westward from Baalah(GS) to Mount Seir,(GT) ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Kesalon), continued down to Beth Shemesh(GU) and crossed to Timnah.(GV) 11 It went to the northern slope of Ekron,(GW) turned toward Shikkeron, passed along to Mount Baalah(GX) and reached Jabneel.(GY) The boundary ended at the sea.

12 The western boundary is the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.(GZ)

These are the boundaries around the people of Judah by their clans.

13 In accordance with the Lord’s command to him, Joshua gave to Caleb(HA) son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah—Kiriath Arba(HB), that is, Hebron.(HC) (Arba was the forefather of Anak.)(HD) 14 From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites(HE)—Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai,(HF) the sons of Anak.(HG) 15 From there he marched against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). 16 And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah(HH) in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” 17 Othniel(HI) son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.

18 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him[f] to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”

19 She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev,(HJ) give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.(HK)

20 This is the inheritance of the tribe of Judah, according to its clans:

21 The southernmost towns of the tribe of Judah in the Negev(HL) toward the boundary of Edom were:

45 Ekron,(JD) with its surrounding settlements and villages; 46 west of Ekron, all that were in the vicinity of Ashdod,(JE) together with their villages; 47 Ashdod,(JF) its surrounding settlements and villages; and Gaza, its settlements and villages, as far as the Wadi of Egypt(JG) and the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.(JH)

48 In the hill country:

Shamir,(JI) Jattir,(JJ) Sokoh,(JK) 49 Dannah, Kiriath Sannah (that is, Debir(JL)), 50 Anab,(JM) Eshtemoh,(JN) Anim, 51 Goshen,(JO) Holon(JP) and Giloh(JQ)—eleven towns and their villages.

61 In the wilderness:(KG)

Beth Arabah,(KH) Middin, Sekakah, 62 Nibshan, the City of Salt and En Gedi(KI)—six towns and their villages.

63 Judah could not(KJ) dislodge the Jebusites(KK), who were living in Jerusalem;(KL) to this day the Jebusites live there with the people of Judah.(KM)

Allotment for Ephraim and Manasseh

16 The allotment for Joseph began at the Jordan, east of the springs of Jericho, and went up from there through the desert(KN) into the hill country of Bethel.(KO) It went on from Bethel (that is, Luz(KP)),[i] crossed over to the territory of the Arkites(KQ) in Ataroth,(KR) descended westward to the territory of the Japhletites as far as the region of Lower Beth Horon(KS) and on to Gezer,(KT) ending at the Mediterranean Sea.

So Manasseh and Ephraim, the descendants of Joseph, received their inheritance.(KU)

This was the territory of Ephraim, according to its clans:

The boundary of their inheritance went from Ataroth Addar(KV) in the east to Upper Beth Horon(KW) and continued to the Mediterranean Sea. From Mikmethath(KX) on the north it curved eastward to Taanath Shiloh, passing by it to Janoah(KY) on the east. Then it went down from Janoah(KZ) to Ataroth(LA) and Naarah, touched Jericho and came out at the Jordan. From Tappuah(LB) the border went west to the Kanah Ravine(LC) and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the Ephraimites, according to its clans. It also included all the towns and their villages that were set aside for the Ephraimites within the inheritance of the Manassites.(LD)

10 They did not dislodge the Canaanites living in Gezer; to this day the Canaanites live among the people of Ephraim but are required to do forced labor.(LE)

17 This was the allotment for the tribe of Manasseh(LF) as Joseph’s firstborn,(LG) that is, for Makir,(LH) Manasseh’s firstborn. Makir was the ancestor of the Gileadites, who had received Gilead(LI) and Bashan(LJ) because the Makirites were great soldiers. So this allotment was for the rest of the people of Manasseh(LK)—the clans of Abiezer,(LL) Helek, Asriel,(LM) Shechem, Hepher(LN) and Shemida.(LO) These are the other male descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph by their clans.

Now Zelophehad son of Hepher,(LP) the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons but only daughters,(LQ) whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance along with the brothers of their father, according to the Lord’s command.(LR) Manasseh’s share consisted of ten tracts of land besides Gilead and Bashan east of the Jordan,(LS) because the daughters of the tribe of Manasseh received an inheritance among the sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the descendants of Manasseh.

The territory of Manasseh extended from Asher(LT) to Mikmethath(LU) east of Shechem.(LV) The boundary ran southward from there to include the people living at En Tappuah. (Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, but Tappuah(LW) itself, on the boundary of Manasseh, belonged to the Ephraimites.) Then the boundary continued south to the Kanah Ravine.(LX) There were towns belonging to Ephraim lying among the towns of Manasseh, but the boundary of Manasseh was the northern side of the ravine and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. 10 On the south the land belonged to Ephraim, on the north to Manasseh. The territory of Manasseh reached the Mediterranean Sea and bordered Asher(LY) on the north and Issachar(LZ) on the east.(MA)

11 Within Issachar(MB) and Asher, Manasseh also had Beth Shan,(MC) Ibleam(MD) and the people of Dor,(ME) Endor,(MF) Taanach(MG) and Megiddo,(MH) together with their surrounding settlements (the third in the list is Naphoth[j]).(MI)

12 Yet the Manassites were not able(MJ) to occupy these towns, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that region. 13 However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor but did not drive them out completely.(MK)

14 The people of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given us only one allotment and one portion for an inheritance? We are a numerous people, and the Lord has blessed us abundantly.”(ML)

15 “If you are so numerous,” Joshua answered, “and if the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go up into the forest(MM) and clear land for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites(MN) and Rephaites.(MO)

16 The people of Joseph replied, “The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who live in the plain have chariots fitted with iron,(MP) both those in Beth Shan(MQ) and its settlements and those in the Valley of Jezreel.”(MR)

17 But Joshua said to the tribes of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—“You are numerous and very powerful. You will have not only one allotment(MS) 18 but the forested hill country(MT) as well. Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron(MU) and though they are strong, you can drive them out.”
