Division of the Land

13 Thus says the Lord God: “This is the boundary[a] by which (A)you shall divide the land for inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel. (B)Joseph shall have two portions. 14 And you shall divide equally what (C)I swore (D)to give to your fathers. (E)This land shall fall to you as your inheritance.

15 “This shall be the boundary of the land: On the north side, from (F)the Great Sea (G)by way of Hethlon to Lebo-hamath, and on to (H)Zedad,[b] 16 (I)Berothah, Sibraim (which lies on the border between (J)Damascus and (K)Hamath), as far as Hazer-hatticon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17 So the boundary shall run from the sea to (L)Hazar-enan, which is on the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north.[c] This shall be the north side.[d]

18 “On the east side, the boundary shall run between Hauran and Damascus; along the Jordan between (M)Gilead and the land of Israel; to (N)the eastern sea and as far as Tamar.[e] This shall be the east side.

19 “On the south side, it shall run from (O)Tamar as far as (P)the waters of Meribah-kadesh, from there along (Q)the Brook of Egypt[f] to (R)the Great Sea. This shall be the south side.

20 “On the west side, the Great Sea shall be the boundary to a point (S)opposite Lebo-hamath. This shall be the west side.

21 (T)“So you shall divide this land among you according to the tribes of Israel. 22 (U)You shall allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and (V)for the sojourners who reside among you and have had children among you. (W)They shall be to you as native-born children of Israel. With you they shall be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel. 23 In whatever tribe the sojourner resides, there you shall assign him his inheritance, declares the Lord God.

So the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the congregation, (A)“Ataroth, (B)Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, (C)Nebo, and Beon, the land (D)that the Lord struck down before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.” And they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not take us across the Jordan.”

But Moses said to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to the war while you sit here? Why will you discourage the heart of the people of Israel from going over into the land that the Lord has given them? Your fathers did this, (E)when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the people of Israel from going into the land that the Lord had given them. 10 (F)And the Lord's anger was kindled on that day, and he swore, saying, 11 ‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, (G)from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land that I swore to give (H)to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me, 12 none except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the (I)Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for (J)they have wholly followed the Lord.’ 13 And the Lord's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them (K)wander in the wilderness forty years, until (L)all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was gone. 14 And behold, you have risen in your fathers' place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the Lord against Israel!

53 (A)“Among these the land shall be divided for inheritance according to the number of names. 54 (B)To a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance; every tribe shall be given its inheritance in proportion to its list. 55 But the land shall be (C)divided by lot. According to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. 56 Their inheritance shall be divided according to lot between the larger and the smaller.”
