²² There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the people of Israel. Only in Gaza, ^(A)in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain.

⁴ And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named ^(A)Goliath of ^(B)Gath, whose height was six^[a] cubits^[b] and a span.

⁴⁶ from Ekron to the sea, all that were by the side of Ashdod, with their villages.

A Sign Against Egypt and Cush

20 In the year that ^(A)the commander in chief, who was sent by Sargon the king of Assyria, came to ^(B)Ashdod and fought against it and captured it—

²³ In those days also I saw the Jews ^(A)who had married women ^(B)of Ashdod, ^(C)Ammon, and ^(D)Moab. ²⁴ And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language of Judah, but only the language of each people.

⁶ He went out and ^(A)made war against the Philistines and broke through the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod, and he built cities in the territory of Ashdod and elsewhere among the Philistines.

^4 (A)3,000 talents^[a] of gold, of the gold of ^(B)Ophir, and 7,000 talents of refined silver, for overlaying the walls of the house,^{[b] 5} and for all the work to be done by craftsmen, gold for the things of gold and silver for the things of silver. Who then will offer willingly, consecrating himself^[c] today to the Lord?”

⁶ Then ^(C)the leaders of fathers' houses made their freewill offerings, as did also the leaders of the tribes, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and ^(D)the officers over the king's work. ⁷ They gave for the service of the house of God 5,000 talents and 10,000 ^(E)darics^[d] of gold, 10,000 talents of silver, 18,000 talents of bronze and 100,000 talents of iron. ⁸ And whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord, in the care of ^(F)Jehiel the Gershonite.

David Defeats His Enemies

18 ^(A)After this David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and he took Gath and its villages out of the hand of the Philistines.
