² “My servant Moses is dead. Now proceed to cross the Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the Israelites.^(A)

²⁸ But charge Joshua and encourage and strengthen him, because it is he who shall cross over at the head of this people and who shall secure their possession of the land that you will see.’^(A)

⁷ Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and bold, for you are the one who will go with this people into the land that the Lord has sworn to their ancestors to give them, and you will put them in possession of it.^(A)

The Servant, a Light to the Nations

¹¹ “Pass through the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for in three days you are to cross over this Jordan, to go in to take possession of the land that the Lord your God gives you to possess.’ ”^(A)

God’s Commission to Joshua

1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’s assistant, saying,

¹⁶ “Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint someone over the congregation^{(A) 17} who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the Lord may not be like sheep without a shepherd.”^{(B) 18} So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand upon him;^{(C) 19} have him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation and commission him in their sight.^{(D) 20} You shall give him some of your authority, so that all the congregation of the Israelites may obey.^{(E) 21} But he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the decision of the Urim before the Lord; at his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the Israelites with him, the whole congregation.”^(F)

⁵ Now Moses was faithful in all God’s^[a] house as a servant, to testify to the things that would be spoken later.^{(A) 6} Christ, however, was faithful over God’s^[b] house as a son, and we are his house if we hold firm^[c] the boldness and the pride inspired by hope.^(B)

²³ Furthermore, the former priests were many in number because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, ²⁴ but he holds his priesthood permanently because he continues forever.
