John 18:39-19:16
New King James Version
Taking the Place of Barabbas(A)
39 (B)“But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
40 (C)Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” (D)Now Barabbas was a robber.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(E)
19 So then (F)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. 2 And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. 3 [a]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they (G)struck Him with their hands.
4 Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, (H)that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”
Pilate’s Decision
5 Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”
6 (I)Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”
Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”
7 The Jews answered him, (J)“We have a law, and according to [b]our law He ought to die, because (K)He made Himself the Son of God.”
8 Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, 9 and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” (L)But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have [c]power to crucify You, and power to release You?”
11 Jesus answered, (M)“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (N)the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”
12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. (O)Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”
13 (P)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now (Q)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”
15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”
Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”
The chief priests answered, (R)“We have no king but Caesar!”
16 (S)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus [d]and led Him away.

39 (A)But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 40 They cried out again, (B)“Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.[a]
Jesus Delivered to Be Crucified
19 Then Pilate took Jesus and (C)flogged him. 2 (D)And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. 3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. 4 Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that (E)I find no guilt in him.” 5 So Jesus came out, wearing (F)the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, (G)“Behold the man!” 6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, (H)“Take him yourselves and crucify him, for (I)I find no guilt in him.” 7 The Jews[b] answered him, “We have a law, and (J)according to that law he ought to die because (K)he has made himself the Son of God.” 8 When Pilate heard this statement, (L)he was even more afraid. 9 (M)He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, (N)“Where are you from?” But (O)Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, (P)“You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (Q)he who delivered me over to you (R)has the greater sin.”
12 From then on (S)Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. (T)Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on (U)the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic[c] Gabbatha. 14 Now it was (V)the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.[d] He said to the Jews, (W)“Behold your King!” 15 They cried out, (X)“Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16 (Y)So he (Z)delivered him over to them to be crucified.
