³⁸ I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,^(A) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.^[a]”^(B)

¹⁹ Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;^(A) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

⁴⁴ You belong to your father, the devil,^(A) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.^(B) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.^(C)

⁴¹ You are doing the works of your own father.”^(A)

“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”^(B)

³⁰ By myself I can do nothing;^(A) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,^(B) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.^(C)

⁸ The one who does what is sinful is of the devil,^(A) because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God^(B) appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.^{(C) 9} No one who is born of God^(D) will continue to sin,^(E) because God’s seed^(F) remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. ¹⁰ This is how we know who the children of God^(G) are and who the children of the devil^(H) are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love^(I) their brother and sister.^(J)

²⁴ Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.^(A)

¹⁰ Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?^(A) The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.^(B) Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

⁴⁹ For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me^(A) to say all that I have spoken. ⁵⁰ I know that his command leads to eternal life.^(B) So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”^(C)
