²⁴ I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,^(A) you will indeed die in your sins.”

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.^(A) You believe^(B) in God^[a];^(C) believe also in me. ² My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there^(D) to prepare a place for you? ³ And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back^(E) and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.^{(F) 4} You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

⁵ Thomas^(G) said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

⁶ Jesus answered, “I am^(H) the way^(I) and the truth^(J) and the life.^(K) No one comes to the Father except through me.^(L)

²¹ For to me, to live is Christ^(A) and to die is gain.

²³ I am torn between the two: I desire to depart^(A) and be with Christ,^(B) which is better by far;

⁷ and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven^(A) in blazing fire^(B) with his powerful angels.^{(C) 8} He will punish^(D) those who do not know God^(E) and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.^{(F) 9} They will be punished with everlasting destruction^(G) and shut out from the presence of the Lord^(H) and from the glory of his might^(I)

¹⁰ And the devil, who deceived them,^(A) was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur,^(B) where the beast^(C) and the false prophet^(D) had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.^(E)

The Judgment of the Dead

¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne^(F) and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence,^(G) and there was no place for them. ¹² And I saw the dead, great and small,^(H) standing before the throne, and books were opened.^(I) Another book was opened, which is the book of life.^(J) The dead were judged^(K) according to what they had done^(L) as recorded in the books. ¹³ The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades^(M) gave up the dead^(N) that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.^(O)
