¹² Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.”

Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”^(A)

¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”^(A)

But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?”^(B) So they were divided.^(C)

⁴⁰ On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”^(A)

⁴¹ Others said, “He is the Messiah.”

Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?^{(B) 42} Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants^(C) and from Bethlehem,^(D) the town where David lived?” ⁴³ Thus the people were divided^(E) because of Jesus.

⁴⁷ “You mean he has deceived you also?”^(A) the Pharisees retorted.

³² The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

¹⁴ Do everything without grumbling^(A) or arguing,

⁷ Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die.

²⁴ He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit^(A) and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.^(B)

¹⁹ The Jews who heard these words were again divided.^{(A) 20} Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed^(B) and raving mad.^(C) Why listen to him?”

²¹ But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon.^(D) Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”^(E)

⁵² They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”^(A)
