Jesus at the Feast of Booths

7 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because ^(A)the Jews^[a] were seeking to kill him. ² Now ^(B)the Jews' Feast of ^(C)Booths was at hand. ^3 (D)So his brothers^[b] said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. ⁴ For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, ^(E)show yourself to the world.” ^5 (F)For not even ^(G)his brothers believed in him. ⁶ Jesus said to them, ^(H)“My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. ⁷ The world cannot hate you, but ^(I)it hates me because I testify about it that ^(J)its works are evil. ⁸ You go up to the feast. I am not^[c] going up to this feast, for ^(K)my time has not yet fully come.” ⁹ After saying this, he remained in Galilee.

¹⁰ But after ^(L)his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. ^11 (M)The Jews ^(N)were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” ¹² And there was much ^(O)muttering about him among the people. ^(P)While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, ^(Q)he is leading the people astray.” ¹³ Yet ^(R)for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.

¹⁴ About the middle of the feast Jesus went up ^(A)into the temple and began teaching. ¹⁵ The Jews therefore ^(B)marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning,^[a] when he has never studied?” ¹⁶ So Jesus answered them, ^(C)“My teaching is not mine, but his ^(D)who sent me. ^17 (E)If anyone's will is to do God's^[b] will, ^(F)he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I ^(G)am speaking on my own authority. ¹⁸ The one who speaks on his own authority ^(H)seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. ^19 (I)Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. ^(J)Why do you seek to kill me?” ²⁰ The crowd answered, ^(K)“You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” ²¹ Jesus answered them, “I did ^(L)one work, and you all marvel at it. ^22 (M)Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but ^(N)from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. ²³ If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, ^(O)are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man's whole body well? ^24 (P)Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath

5 After this there was a ^(A)feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

² Now there is in Jerusalem by ^(B)the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic^[a] called Bethesda,^[b] which has five roofed colonnades. ³ In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and ^(C)paralyzed.^{[c] 5} One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. ⁶ When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” ⁷ The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” ⁸ Jesus said to him, ^(D)“Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” ^9 (E)And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.

^(F)Now that day was the Sabbath. ¹⁰ So the Jews^[d] said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and ^(G)it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” ¹¹ But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” ¹² They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” ¹³ Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for ^(H)Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. ¹⁴ Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! ^(I)Sin no more, ^(J)that nothing worse may happen to you.” ¹⁵ The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.

⁷ But the Lord said to Samuel, ^(A)“Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, ^(B)but the Lord looks on the heart.”

Can This Be the Christ?

²⁵ Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom ^(A)they seek to kill? ²⁶ And here he is, ^(B)speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that ^(C)the authorities really know that this is the Christ? ²⁷ But ^(D)we know ^(E)where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, ^(F)no one will know where he comes from.” ²⁸ So Jesus proclaimed, ^(G)as he taught in the temple, ^(H)“You know me, and you know where I come from. But ^(I)I have not come of my own accord. ^(J)He who sent me is true, ^(K)and him you do not know. ^29 (L)I know him, for I come ^(M)from him, and ^(N)he sent me.” ^30 (O)So they were seeking to arrest him, but ^(P)no one laid a hand on him, ^(Q)because his hour had not yet come. ³¹ Yet ^(R)many of the people believed in him. They said, ^(S)“When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”

Officers Sent to Arrest Jesus

³² The Pharisees heard the crowd ^(T)muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent ^(U)officers to arrest him. ³³ Jesus then said, ^(V)“I will be with you a little longer, and then ^(W)I am going to him who sent me. ^34 (X)You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” ³⁵ The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? ^(Y)Does he intend to go to ^(Z)the Dispersion among ^(AA)the Greeks and teach the Greeks? ³⁶ What does he mean by saying, ^(AB)‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”

Wisdom from the Spirit

⁶ Yet among ^(A)the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not ^(B)a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, ^(C)who are doomed to pass away. ⁷ But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, ^(D)which God decreed before the ages for our glory. ⁸ None of ^(E)the rulers of this age understood this, for ^(F)if they had, they would not have crucified ^(G)the Lord of glory. ⁹ But, as it is written,

¹⁰ these things ^(K)God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even ^(L)the depths of God. ¹¹ For who knows a person's thoughts ^(M)except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. ¹² Now ^(N)we have received not ^(O)the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. ¹³ And we impart this ^(P)in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, ^(Q)interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.^[a]

¹⁴ The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are ^(R)folly to him, and ^(S)he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. ¹⁵ The ^(T)spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. ^16 (U)“For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But ^(V)we have the mind of Christ.

Rivers of Living Water

^37 (A)On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, ^(B)“If anyone thirsts, let him ^(C)come to me and drink. ³⁸ Whoever believes in me, ^(D)as^[a] the Scripture has said, ^(E)‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of ^(F)living water.’” ³⁹ Now ^(G)this he said about the Spirit, ^(H)whom those who believed in him were to receive, ^(I)for as yet the Spirit had not been ^(J)given, ^(K)because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Division Among the People

⁴⁰ When they heard these words, ^(L)some of the people said, “This really is ^(M)the Prophet.” ⁴¹ Others said, “This is ^(N)the Christ.” But some said, ^(O)“Is the Christ to come from Galilee? ⁴² Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes ^(P)from the offspring of David, and comes ^(Q)from Bethlehem, the village ^(R)where David was?” ⁴³ So there was ^(S)a division among the people over him. ^44 (T)Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

^45 (U)The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” ⁴⁶ The officers answered, ^(V)“No one ever spoke like this man!” ⁴⁷ The Pharisees answered them, ^(W)“Have you also been deceived? ^48 (X)Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? ⁴⁹ But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” ^50 (Y)Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, ^51 (Z)“Does our law judge a man without first ^(AA)giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” ⁵² They replied, ^(AB)“Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that ^(AC)no prophet arises from Galilee.”
