⁷¹ He spoke of Judas ^(A)the son of Simon Iscariot, for ^(B)he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

Judas to Betray Jesus

^14 (A)Then one of the twelve, whose name was ^(B)Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests ¹⁵ and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they ^(C)paid him ^(D)thirty pieces of silver. ¹⁶ And from that moment he sought an opportunity ^(E)to betray him.

⁴ For ^(A)certain people ^(B)have crept in unnoticed ^(C)who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert ^(D)the grace of our God into sensuality and ^(E)deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

¹⁶ “Brothers, ^(A)the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, ^(B)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. ¹⁷ For ^(C)he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in ^(D)this ministry.” ¹⁸ (Now this man ^(E)acquired a field with ^(F)the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong^[a] he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. ¹⁹ And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called ^(G)in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) ²⁰ “For it is written in the Book of Psalms,

and

²³ this Jesus,^{[a] (A)}delivered up according to ^(B)the definite plan and ^(C)foreknowledge of God, ^(D)you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.

² Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew ^(A)the place, for ^(B)Jesus often met there with his disciples. ^3 (C)So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. ⁴ Then Jesus, ^(D)knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, ^(E)“Whom do you seek?” ⁵ They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.”^[a] Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. ^6 (F)When Jesus^[b] said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

²⁶ Jesus answered, ^(A)“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread ^(B)when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, ^(C)he gave it to Judas, ^(D)the son of Simon Iscariot.

Judas Hangs Himself

³ Then when ^(A)Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus^[a] was condemned, ^(B)he changed his mind and brought back ^(C)the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, ⁴ saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? ^(D)See to it yourself.” ⁵ And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, ^(E)he departed, and he went and hanged himself.
