47 “Truly I tell you, anyone who believes[a] has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna(A) in the wilderness,(B) and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that anyone may eat of it and not die.(C) 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live(D) forever.(E) The bread that I will give for the life(F) of the world is my flesh.”(G)

52 At that, the Jews argued(H) among themselves,(I) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man(J) and drink his blood,(K) you do not have life in yourselves. 54 The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood(L) has eternal life, and I will raise(M) him up on the last day, 55 because my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56 The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.(N) 57 Just as the living(O) Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live(P) because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the manna[b] your ancestors ate—and they died. The one who eats this bread will live forever.”(Q)

The First Lord’s Supper

26 As they were eating,(A) Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to the disciples,(B) and said, “Take and eat it; this is my body.”(C) 27 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is my blood of the covenant,[a] which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.(D) 29 But I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”(E)

Instructions for the Passover

12 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, “This month is to be the beginning of months for you; it is the first month of your year.(A) Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month they must each select an animal of the flock according to their fathers’ families, one animal per family.

They must take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses where they eat them. They are to eat the meat that night; they should eat it, roasted over the fire along with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.(A) Do not eat any of it raw or cooked in boiling[a] water, but only roasted(B) over fire—its head as well as its legs and inner organs. 10 You must not leave any of it until morning;(C) any part of it left until morning you must burn. 11 Here is how you must eat it: You must be dressed for travel,[b] your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. You are to eat it in a hurry; it is the Lord’s Passover.(D)

12 “I will pass through(E) the land of Egypt on that night and strike every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, both people and animals. I am the Lord; I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt.(F) 13 The blood on the houses where you are staying will be a distinguishing mark for you; when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague will be among you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

21 Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go, select an animal from the flock according to your families, and slaughter the Passover animal.(A) 22 Take a cluster of hyssop, dip it in the blood(B) that is in the basin, and brush the lintel and the two doorposts with some of the blood in the basin. None of you may go out the door of his house until morning. 23 When the Lord passes through to strike Egypt and sees the blood on the lintel and the two doorposts, he will pass over the door and not let the destroyer enter your houses to strike you.(C)

24 “Keep this command permanently as a statute for you and your descendants. 25 When you enter the land that the Lord will give you as he promised, you are to observe this ceremony. 26 When your children(D) ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ 27 you are to reply, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice(E) to the Lord, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when he struck the Egyptians, and he spared our homes.’” So the people knelt low and worshiped. 28 Then the Israelites went and did this; they did just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron.

16 The cup(A) of blessing(B) that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread(C) that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one(D) body, since all of us share the one bread.

The Lord’s Supper

17 Now in giving this instruction I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse. 18 For to begin with, I hear that when you come together as a church there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. 19 Indeed, it is necessary that there be factions(A) among you, so that those who are approved may be recognized among you. 20 When you come together, then, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper.(B) 21 For at the meal, each one eats his own supper.[a] So one person is hungry while another gets drunk! 22 Don’t you have homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I do not praise you in this matter!

23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you:(C) On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said,[b] “This is my body, which is[c] for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”(D)

25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, and said, “This cup is the new covenant(E) in my blood.(F) Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death(G) until he comes.(H)

Self-Examination

27 So, then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sin against the body[d] and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself; in this way let him eat the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body,[e] eats and drinks judgment(I) on himself.
