The Healing at Bethesda
5 After these things there was (A)a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now in Jerusalem, by (B)the Sheep Gate, there is a pool which (C)in [a]Hebrew is called [b]Bethesda, having five [c]porticoes. 3 In these porticoes lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, limping, or [d]paralyzed.[e] 5 Now a man was there who had been [f]ill for thirty-eight years. 6 Jesus, upon seeing this man lying there and knowing that he had already been in that condition for a long time, *said to him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus *said to him, “(D)Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” 9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.
(E)Now it was a Sabbath on that day. 10 So (F)the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, “It is a Sabbath, and (G)it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.” 11 But he answered them, “He who made me well was the one who said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Pick it up and walk’?” 13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place. 14 Afterward, Jesus *found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not (H)sin anymore, (I)so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15 The man went away, and informed (J)the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 For this reason (K)the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on a Sabbath. 17 But He answered them, “My Father [g]is working until now, and I Myself am working.”
Jesus’ Equality with God
18 For this reason therefore (L)the Jews (M)were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, (N)making Himself equal with God.
19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (O)the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever [h]the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same way. 20 (P)For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him (Q)greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and (R)gives them life, so (S)the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22 For not even the Father judges anyone, but (T)He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son just as they honor the Father. (U)The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and (V)believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and (W)does not come into judgment, but has (X)passed out of death into life.
Two Resurrections
25 Truly, truly, I say to you, [i](Y)a time is coming and [j]even now has arrived, when (Z)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who (AA)hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He (AB)gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to (AC)execute judgment, because He is [k]the Son of Man. 28 Do not be amazed at this; for [l](AD)a time is coming when (AE)all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come out: (AF)those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the bad deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
30 “(AG)I can do nothing [m]on My own. As I hear, I judge; and (AH)My judgment is [n]righteous, because I do not seek My own will but (AI)the will of Him who sent Me.
31 “(AJ)If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not [o]true. 32 There is (AK)another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.
Testimony of John the Baptist
33 You have sent messengers to John, and he (AL)has testified to the truth. 34 But (AM)the testimony I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was (AN)the lamp that was burning and shining, and you (AO)were willing to rejoice for [p]a while in his light.
Testimony of Works
36 But the testimony I have is greater than the testimony of John; for (AP)the works which the Father has given Me (AQ)to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father (AR)has sent Me.
Testimony of the Father
37 And the Father who sent Me, (AS)He has testified about Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38 Also you do not have (AT)His word remaining in you, because you do not believe Him whom He (AU)sent.
Testimony of the Scripture
39 [q](AV)You examine the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is (AW)those very Scriptures that testify about Me; 40 and yet you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41 (AX)I do not receive glory from people; 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not [r]receive Me; (AY)if another comes in his own name, you will [s]receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you [t](AZ)accept [u]glory from one another and you do not seek (BA)the [v]glory that is from (BB)the one and only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is (BC)Moses, in whom you have put your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for (BD)he wrote about Me. 47 But (BE)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Jesus botar en sjuk vid Betesda
5 Sedan kom en av judarnas högtider, och Jesus gick upp till Jerusalem. 2 (A) Vid Fårporten i Jerusalem finns en damm som på hebreiska kallas Betesda[a]. Den har fem pelargångar, 3 och i dem låg många sjuka, blinda, halta och lama.
5 Där fanns en man som hade varit sjuk i trettioåtta år. 6 Jesus såg honom ligga där och visste att han hade varit sjuk så länge, och han frågade honom: "Vill du bli frisk?" 7 Den sjuke svarade: "Herre, jag har ingen som hjälper mig ner i dammen när vattnet börjar svalla. Och när jag försöker ta mig dit själv, hinner någon annan före mig." 8 Jesus sade till honom: "Res dig, ta din bädd[b] och gå!" 9 Genast blev mannen frisk, och han tog sin bädd och gick.
Men det var sabbat den dagen, 10 (B) och judarna sade till mannen som hade blivit botad: "Det är sabbat! Du får inte bära din bädd." 11 Han svarade dem: "Han som gjorde mig frisk sade till mig: Ta din bädd och gå!" 12 Då frågade de: "Vem var den mannen som sade åt dig att ta din bädd och gå?" 13 Men han som hade blivit botad visste inte vem det var. Jesus hade nämligen dragit sig undan, eftersom det var mycket folk på platsen.
14 (C) Senare fann Jesus honom på tempelplatsen och sade till honom: "Se, du har blivit frisk. Synda nu inte mer, så att inte något värre drabbar dig." 15 Mannen gick då och berättade för judarna att det var Jesus som hade gjort honom frisk. 16 (D) Därför började judarna förfölja Jesus, eftersom han gjorde sådant på sabbaten. 17 (E) Men Jesus sade till dem: "Min Far verkar fortfarande, och därför verkar även jag." 18 Då blev judarna ännu ivrigare att döda honom, eftersom han inte bara upphävde sabbaten utan också kallade Gud sin Far och gjorde sig själv lik Gud.
Jesu relation till sin Far
19 (F) Jesus svarade dem: "Jag säger er sanningen: Sonen kan inte göra något av sig själv, utan bara det han ser Fadern göra. Vad Fadern gör, det gör också Sonen. 20 (G) Fadern älskar Sonen och visar honom allt han gör, och större gärningar än dessa ska han visa honom så att ni blir förundrade. 21 För liksom Fadern uppväcker de döda och ger dem liv, så ger också Sonen liv åt vilka han vill. 22 (H) Och Fadern dömer ingen, utan han har överlämnat hela domen till Sonen 23 (I) för att alla ska ära Sonen så som de ärar Fadern. Den som inte ärar Sonen ärar inte heller Fadern som har sänt honom.
24 (J) Jag säger er sanningen: Den som hör mitt ord och tror på honom som har sänt mig, han har evigt liv. Han drabbas inte av domen utan har gått över från döden till livet.
25 (K) Jag säger er sanningen: Det kommer en tid, och den är redan här, när de döda ska höra Guds Sons röst, och de som hör den ska få liv. 26 För liksom Fadern har liv i sig själv, har han också låtit Sonen ha liv i sig själv. 27 Och han har gett honom makt att hålla dom, eftersom han är Människosonen.[c] 28 Var inte förvånade över detta. Det kommer en tid när alla som ligger i gravarna ska höra hans röst 29 (L) och komma ut. De som har gjort gott ska uppstå till liv, och de som har gjort ont ska uppstå till dom. 30 Jag kan inte göra något av mig själv, jag dömer efter det jag hör. Och min dom är rättvis, för jag söker inte min egen vilja utan hans som har sänt mig.
31 Om jag vittnar om mig själv är mitt vittnesbörd inte giltigt. 32 (M) Det finns en annan som vittnar om mig, och jag vet att hans vittnesbörd om mig är sant. 33 (N) Ni har skickat bud till Johannes, och han har vittnat för sanningen. 34 Jag tar inte emot en människas vittnesbörd, men jag säger det här för att ni ska bli frälsta. 35 Han var en lampa som brann och lyste, och för en tid ville ni glädja er i hans ljus.
36 (O) Själv har jag ett vittnesbörd som är större än det Johannes gav. De verk som Fadern har gett mig att fullborda, just de verk som jag utför, de vittnar om att Fadern har sänt mig. 37 (P) Fadern som sänt mig har vittnat om mig. Ni har varken hört hans röst eller sett hans gestalt, 38 och hans ord lever inte kvar i er eftersom ni inte tror på den som han har sänt. 39 (Q) Ni forskar i Skrifterna[d], för ni tror att ni har evigt liv i dem. Det är just de som vittnar om mig, 40 men ni vill inte komma till mig för att få liv.
41 Jag tar inte emot ära från människor. 42 Jag känner er och vet att ni inte har Guds kärlek i er. 43 Jag har kommit i min Fars namn, och ni tar inte emot mig. Men kommer det någon annan i sitt eget namn tar ni emot honom. 44 (R) Hur ska ni kunna tro, när ni tar emot ära av varandra och inte söker den ära som kommer från den ende Guden?
45 Men tro inte att jag kommer att anklaga er inför Fadern. Den som anklagar er är Mose, han som ni har satt ert hopp till. 46 (S) Hade ni trott Mose skulle ni tro på mig, för det var om mig han skrev. 47 Men om ni inte tror hans skrifter, hur ska ni då kunna tro mina ord?"

Chapter 5
The Sign Given on a Sabbath.[b] 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish feasts. 2 Now in Jerusalem, by the Sheep Gate, there is a pool that in Hebrew is called Bethesda.[c] It has five porticos, 3 and in these a large number of invalids used to lie, people who were blind, lame, and paralyzed, waiting for the movement of the water.[d] [ 4 For occasionally an angel of the Lord would come down into the pool and stir up the water. The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease he had.][e]
5 A man who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and was aware that he had been ill for a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 The invalid answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up. While I am still on my way, someone else steps into the pool ahead of me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Rise! Take up your mat and walk!” 9 Immediately, the man was cured, and he took up his mat and began to walk.
Now that day was a Sabbath. 10 Therefore, the Jews said to the man who had been cured, “Today is the Sabbath. It is not lawful for you to carry your mat.” 11 He replied, “The man who cured me said to me, ‘Take up your mat and walk!’ ” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who told you to take it up and walk?” 13 But the man who had been cured did not know who it was, for Jesus had disappeared into the crowd that was there.
14 Later, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jews that Jesus was the man who had made him well. 16 Therefore, the Jews began to harass Jesus because he was doing such things on the Sabbath. 17 However, Jesus responded to them, saying,
“My Father is still working,
and I am at work as well.”
18 For this reason, the Jews became even more determined to kill him, because he was not only breaking the Sabbath but also calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God.
19 The Work of the Son.[f] Jesus replied to them, saying,
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
the Son can do nothing by himself;
he can do only what he sees the Father doing.
For whatever the Father does,
the Son also does.
20 For the Father loves the Son
and shows him everything
that he himself is doing.
And he will show him
even greater works than these,
so that you might be astonished.
21 “Indeed, just as the Father raises the dead
and gives them life,
so does the Son give life
to anyone he chooses.
22 The Father judges no one,
for he has entrusted all judgment to the Son,
23 so that all may honor the Son
as they honor the Father.
Anyone who does not honor the Son
does not honor the Father who sent him.
24 “Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever hears my words
and believes in the one who sent me
possesses eternal life.
He will not come to judgment
but has passed from death to life.
25 “Amen, amen, I say to you,
the hour is coming,
indeed it is already here,
when the dead will hear
the voice of the Son of God,
and all those who hear it will live.
26 For just as the Father has life in himself,
so also he has granted the Son to have life in himself.
27 And he has also granted him
the power to pass judgment,
because he is the Son of Man.
28 “Do not be astonished at this,
for the hour is coming
when all those who are in their graves
will hear his voice
29 and will come forth from their graves.
Those who have done good deeds
will rise to life,
while those who have done evil
will rise to judgment.
30 “I can do nothing on my own.
As I hear, I judge,
and my judgment is just,
because I seek to do
not my own will
but the will of him who sent me.
A Witness to Jesus
31 [g]“If I were to testify about myself,
my testimony would not be true.
32 However, there is another who testifies about me,
and I know that his testimony is true,
the testimony he bore concerning me.
33 You sent messengers to John,
and he has testified to the truth.
34 Not that I accept such human testimony,
but I say these things
so that you may be saved.
35 “John was a burning and shining lamp,
and for a time you were willing
to exult in his light.
36 But I have testimony that is greater than John’s.
The works that my Father
has given me to accomplish,
the very works that I am doing,
testify about me,
that the Father has sent me.
37 “And the Father who sent me
has himself testified about me.
You have not heard his voice
or seen his form,
38 and you do not have his word
abiding in you,
because you do not believe
him whom he has sent.
39 “Search the Scriptures carefully
because you believe that through them
you will gain eternal life.
Even they testify on my behalf.
40 Yet you refuse to come to me
to receive that life.
Unbelief of Jesus’ Hearers
41 “I do not accept the praise of men.
42 Moreover, I know that you do not have
the love of God in your hearts.
43 I have come in the name of my Father,
yet you do not accept me.
But if another should come in his own name,
you will accept him.
44 How can you believe
when you accept praise from one another,
yet you do not seek
the praise that comes from
the only God?
45 “Do not think that I will accuse you
before the Father.
You have placed your hope in Moses,
and he is the one who will accuse you.
46 If you truly believed Moses,
you would have believed in me,
for it is about me that he wrote.
47 But since you do not believe what he wrote,
how will you believe what I say?”

- John 5:1 Every Jewish feast is a memorial of what God has done for his people in deeds that manifest his power to create and restore. It is in this setting that the evangelist places an important action of Jesus, which leads to a debate over the meaning of the action: Is God himself at work here?
- John 5:1 Jesus, the Son of God, claims a power that belongs to God alone. In addition, by breaking the Sabbath precept, Jesus proclaims the end of the old covenant. The incident is perhaps to be connected with the feast of Pentecost, which, according to Jewish tradition, commemorates the promulgation of the Law on Sinai. This would make Jesus’ action even more eloquent.
- John 5:2 Bethesda, also called Bethsaida or Bethzatha.
- John 5:3 Waiting for the movement of the water: these words appear only in the Caesarean and Western recensions.
- John 5:4 This verse is lacking in many important manuscripts, including the oldest.
- John 5:19 The action of Jesus creates scandal and anger among the religious authorities. He has to explain his activity and especially his claim that he and the Father are one. The evangelist deepens this affirmation of Jesus’ divinity. What would be seen as blasphemous in anyone else is here a profound reality.
 Jesus is one with his Father. All the work of Jesus is God’s action among us. Jesus has the power to give or restore life to those who welcome his word as that of God, even if they are victims of sin. To encounter Jesus is to face judgment and to experience eternal life even now. To accept or refuse his work: no decision is more important for us.
- John 5:31 The claim made by Jesus has to be confirmed. People cannot testify on their own behalf. There was, of course, John the Baptist’s testimony in favor of Christ, but it had already become no more than a remembrance. It is in the works of Jesus that believers recognize the attestation of the Father.
 But how could other people accept this recognition, those who are only preoccupied with their rank in the world, with their person, or with their religious role? Victimized by such an attitude, they falsify even the testimony of Scripture to protect themselves. Only those people can come to Jesus who rid themselves of their pretensions, human and even religious, those who are truly inflamed with love for God.
