The Healing at the Pool

Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate(A) a pool, which in Aramaic(B) is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”(C) At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(D) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(E) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(F)

11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’

12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”

13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(G) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(H) that it was Jesus who had made him well.

The Authority of the Son

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(I) is always at his work(J) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(K) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(L)

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(M) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(N) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(O) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(P) even so the Son gives life(Q) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(R) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(S)

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(T) has eternal life(U) and will not be judged(V) but has crossed over from death to life.(W) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(X) when the dead will hear(Y) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(Z) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(AA) because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(AB) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(AC) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(AD) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(AE) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(AF)

Testimonies About Jesus

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(AG) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(AH) and I know that his testimony about me is true.

33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(AI) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(AJ) but I mention it that you may be saved.(AK) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(AL) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(AM) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(AN)—testify that the Father has sent me.(AO) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(AP) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(AQ) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(AR) for you do not believe(AS) the one he sent.(AT) 39 You study[c] the Scriptures(AU) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(AV) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(AW) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(AX) to have life.

41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(AY) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[d]?(AZ)

45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(BA) on whom your hopes are set.(BB) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(BC) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(BD)

The Healing at Bethesda

After these things there was (A)a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now there is in Jerusalem by (B)the sheep gate a pool, which is called (C)in [a]Hebrew [b]Bethesda, having five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [c][waiting for the moving of the waters; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever sickness with which he was afflicted.] And a man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been sick a long time, He *said to him, “Do you wish to get well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when (D)the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus *said to him, (E)Get up, pick up your mat and walk.” And immediately the man became well, and picked up his mat and began to walk.

Jesus’ Equality with the Father

18 For this reason therefore (M)the Jews (N)were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, (O)making Himself equal with God.

19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (P)the Son can do nothing from Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever [d]the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same manner. 20 (Q)For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him (R)greater works than these, so that you will marvel. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and (S)gives them life, even so (T)the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22 For not even the Father judges anyone, but (U)He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. (V)He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and (W)believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and (X)does not come into judgment, but has (Y)passed out of death into life.

Two Resurrections

25 Truly, truly, I say to you, (Z)an hour is coming and now is, when (AA)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who (AB)hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He (AC)gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to (AD)execute judgment, because He is [e]the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for (AE)an hour is coming, in which (AF)all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come forth; (AG)those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

30 (AH)I can do nothing from Myself. As I hear, I judge; and (AI)My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will, but (AJ)the will of Him who sent Me.

31 (AK)If I alone bear witness about Myself, My witness is not [f]true. 32 There is (AL)another who bears witness about Me, and I know that the witness which He gives about Me is true.

Witnesses to Jesus: The Father and the Scriptures

33 You have sent to John, and he (AM)has borne witness to the truth. 34 But (AN)the witness I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was (AO)the lamp that was burning and shining and you (AP)were willing to rejoice for [g]a while in his light. 36 But the witness I have is greater than the witness of John; for (AQ)the works which the Father has given Me (AR)to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness about Me, that the Father (AS)has sent Me. 37 And the Father who sent Me, (AT)He has borne witness about Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. 38 And you do not have (AU)His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He (AV)sent. 39 [h](AW)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is (AX)these that bear witness about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41 (AY)I do not receive glory from men; 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; (AZ)if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you (BA)receive [i]glory from one another and you do not seek (BB)the [j]glory that is from (BC)the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father; the one who accuses you is (BD)Moses, in whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for (BE)he wrote about Me. 47 But (BF)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

41 I receive not honour from men.

42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.

47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

Foi et incrédulité

La guérison d’un paralysé à Jérusalem

Quelque temps plus tard, Jésus remonta à Jérusalem à l’occasion d’une fête juive. Or, dans cette ville, près de la porte des Brebis, se trouvait une piscine[a] entourée de cinq galeries couvertes, appelée en hébreu Béthesda[b]. Ces galeries étaient remplies de malades qui y restaient couchés : des aveugles, des paralysés, des impotents[c].

Il y avait là un homme malade depuis trente-huit ans.

Jésus le vit couché ; quand il sut qu’il était là depuis si longtemps, il lui demanda : Veux-tu être guéri ?

– Maître, répondit le malade, je n’ai personne pour me plonger dans la piscine quand l’eau commence à bouillonner. Le temps que je me traîne là-bas, un autre y arrive avant moi.

– Eh bien, lui dit Jésus, lève-toi, prends ta natte et marche !

A l’instant même l’homme fut guéri. Il prit sa natte et se mit à marcher.

Mais cela se passait un jour de sabbat. 10 Les Juifs interpellèrent donc l’homme qui venait d’être guéri : C’est le sabbat ! Tu n’as pas le droit de porter cette natte.

11 – Mais, répliqua-t-il, celui qui m’a guéri m’a dit : « Prends ta natte et marche. »

12 – Et qui t’a dit cela ? lui demandèrent-ils.

13 Mais l’homme qui avait été guéri ignorait qui c’était, car Jésus avait disparu dans la foule qui se pressait en cet endroit.

14 Peu de temps après, Jésus le rencontra dans la cour du Temple.

– Te voilà guéri, lui dit-il. Mais veille à ne plus pécher, pour qu’il ne t’arrive rien de pire.

15 Et l’homme alla annoncer aux Juifs que c’était Jésus qui l’avait guéri.

Le Père et le Fils

16 Les Juifs se mirent donc à accuser Jésus parce qu’il avait fait cela le jour du sabbat.

17 Jésus leur répondit : Mon Père est à l’œuvre jusqu’à présent, et moi aussi je suis à l’œuvre.

18 Cette remarque fut pour eux une raison de plus pour chercher à le faire mourir car, non content de violer la loi sur le sabbat, il appelait encore Dieu son propre Père et se faisait ainsi l’égal de Dieu. 19 Jésus répondit à ces reproches en leur disant : Vraiment, je vous l’assure : le Fils ne peut rien faire de sa propre initiative ; il agit seulement d’après ce qu’il voit faire au Père. Tout ce que fait le Père, le Fils le fait également, 20 car le Père aime le Fils et lui montre tout ce qu’il fait. Il lui montrera même des œuvres plus grandes que toutes celles que vous avez vues jusqu’à présent, et vous en serez stupéfaits. 21 En effet, comme le Père ressuscite les morts et donne la vie, ainsi le Fils, lui aussi, donne la vie à qui il veut. 22 De plus, ce n’est pas le Père qui prononce le jugement sur les hommes ; il a remis tout jugement au Fils, 23 afin que tous les hommes honorent le Fils au même titre que le Père. Ne pas honorer le Fils, c’est ne pas honorer le Père qui l’a envoyé.

24 Oui, vraiment, je vous l’assure : celui qui écoute ce que je dis et qui place sa confiance dans le Père qui m’a envoyé, possède, dès à présent, la vie éternelle et il ne sera pas condamné ; il est déjà passé de la mort à la vie. 25 Oui, vraiment, je vous l’assure : l’heure vient, et elle est déjà là, où les morts entendront la voix du Fils de Dieu, et tous ceux qui l’auront entendue vivront.

26 En effet, comme le Père possède la vie en lui-même, il a accordé au Fils d’avoir la vie en lui-même. 27 Et parce qu’il est le Fils de l’homme, il lui a donné autorité pour exercer le jugement.

28 Ne vous en étonnez pas : l’heure vient où tous ceux qui sont dans la tombe entendront la voix du Fils de l’homme. 29 Alors, ils en sortiront : ceux qui auront fait le bien ressusciteront pour la vie, ceux qui auront fait le mal ressusciteront pour être condamnés[d]. 30 Pour moi, je ne peux rien faire de mon propre chef ; je juge seulement comme le Père me l’indique. Et mon verdict est juste, car je ne cherche pas à réaliser mes propres désirs, mais à faire la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé.

Les témoins du Fils

31 Bien sûr, si j’étais seul à témoigner en ma faveur, mon témoignage ne serait pas vrai.

32 Mais j’ai un autre témoin[e] et je sais que son témoignage est vrai. 33 Vous avez envoyé une commission d’enquête auprès de Jean et il a rendu témoignage à la vérité[f]. 34 Moi, je n’ai pas besoin d’un homme pour témoigner en ma faveur, mais je dis cela pour que vous, vous soyez sauvés. 35 Oui, Jean était vraiment comme un flambeau que l’on allume pour qu’il répande sa clarté. Mais vous, vous avez simplement voulu, pour un moment, vous réjouir à sa lumière.

36 Quant à moi, j’ai en ma faveur un témoignage qui a plus de poids que celui de Jean : c’est celui des œuvres que le Père m’a donné d’accomplir. Oui, ces œuvres que j’accomplis attestent clairement que le Père m’a envoyé. 37 De plus, le Père lui-même, qui m’a envoyé, a témoigné en ma faveur. Mais vous n’avez jamais entendu sa voix, ni vu sa face. 38 Sa parole n’habite pas en vous ; la preuve, c’est que vous ne croyez pas en celui qu’il a envoyé. 39 Vous étudiez avec soin les Ecritures, parce que vous êtes convaincus d’en obtenir la vie éternelle. Or, précisément, ce sont elles qui témoignent de moi. 40 Mais voilà : vous ne voulez pas venir à moi pour recevoir la vie.

41 Je ne cherche pas les honneurs de la part des hommes. 42 Seulement, je constate une chose : au fond de vous-mêmes, vous n’avez pas d’amour pour Dieu. 43 Je suis venu au nom de mon Père, et vous ne me recevez pas. Si un autre vient en son propre nom, vous le recevrez ! 44 D’ailleurs, comment pourriez-vous parvenir à la foi alors que vous cherchez à être honorés les uns par les autres et que vous ne recherchez pas la gloire qui vient de Dieu seul ?

45 N’allez surtout pas croire que je serai moi votre accusateur auprès de mon Père ; c’est Moïse qui vous accusera, oui, ce Moïse même en qui vous avez mis votre espérance.

46 En effet, si vous l’aviez réellement cru, vous m’auriez aussi cru, car il a parlé de moi dans ses livres. 47 Si vous ne croyez même pas à ses écrits, comment croirez-vous à mes paroles ?
