¹⁷ He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him ^(A)the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, ^(B)you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed ^(C)my sheep.

³⁸ Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(A)the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

³⁰ Now we know that ^(A)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that ^(B)you came from God.”

⁷² And immediately the rooster crowed ^(A)a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, ^(B)“Before the rooster crows twice, you will ^(C)deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.^[a]

¹⁵ When they had ^(A)finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ^(B)“Simon, ^(C)son of John, ^(D)do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed ^(E)my lambs.” ¹⁶ He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, ^(F)“Tend ^(G)my sheep.”

²³ and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he ^(A)who searches mind and heart, and ^(B)I will give to each of you according to your works.

³⁰ And ^(A)do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, ^(B)by whom you were sealed for the day of ^(C)redemption.

¹⁶ By this we know love, that ^(A)he laid down his life for us, and ^(B)we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. ¹⁷ But ^(C)if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet ^(D)closes his heart against him, ^(E)how does God's love abide in him? ¹⁸ Little children, let us not ^(F)love in word or talk but in deed and ^(G)in truth.

¹⁹ By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; ²⁰ for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. ²¹ Beloved, ^(H)if our heart does not condemn us, ^(I)we have confidence before God; ²² and ^(J)whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and ^(K)do what pleases him. ²³ And this is his commandment, ^(L)that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and ^(M)love one another, ^(N)just as he has commanded us. ^24 (O)Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God,^[a] and God^[b] in him. And ^(P)by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

¹² Therefore I intend ^(A)always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in ^(B)the truth that you have. ¹³ I think it right, as long as I am in this ^(C)body,^{[a] (D)}to stir you up by way of reminder, ^14 (E)since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, ^(F)as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. ¹⁵ And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.
