Jesus Is Buried
38 (A)Now after these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but (B)secretly because of his (C)fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39 (D)And Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, (E)bringing a [a]mixture of (F)myrrh and aloes, weighing about [b]one (G)hundred litras. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and (H)bound it in (I)linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a (J)new tomb (K)in which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of (L)Preparation, since the tomb was (M)nearby, they laid Jesus there.

The Burial of Jesus
38 Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus’ body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away. 39 With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought about seventy-five pounds[a] of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes. 40 Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth. 41 The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used before. 42 And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passover[b] and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
