The King on a Cross(A)

17 (B)And He, bearing His cross, (C)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and (D)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 (E)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 (F)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

(G)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”

Therefore the soldiers did these things.

Behold Your Mother

25 (H)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (I)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (J)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (K)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (L)to his own home.

It Is Finished

28 After this, Jesus, [a]knowing that all things were now accomplished, (M)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and (N)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (O)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

17 and bearing his cross, he went forth to the place called [Place] of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha;

18 where they crucified him, and with him two others, on this side, and on that side, and Jesus in the midst.

19 And Pilate also wrote a title, and put [it] on the cross, and it was written, `Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews;'

20 this title, therefore, read many of the Jews, because the place was nigh to the city where Jesus was crucified, and it was having been written in Hebrew, in Greek, in Roman.

21 The chief priests of the Jews said, therefore, to Pilate, `Write not -- The king of the Jews, but that one said, I am king of the Jews;'

22 Pilate answered, `What I have written, I have written.'

23 The soldiers, therefore, when they did crucify Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to each soldier a part, also the coat, and the coat was seamless, from the top woven throughout,

24 they said, therefore, to one another, `We may not rend it, but cast a lot for it, whose it shall be;' that the Writing might be fulfilled, that is saying, `They divided my garments to themselves, and upon my raiment they did cast a lot;' the soldiers, therefore, indeed, did these things.

25 And there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleopas, and Mary the Magdalene;

26 Jesus, therefore, having seen [his] mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he was loving, he saith to his mother, `Woman, lo, thy son;'

27 afterward he saith to the disciple, `Lo, thy mother;' and from that hour the disciple took her to his own [home].

28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things now have been finished, that the Writing may be fulfilled, saith, `I thirst;'

29 a vessel, therefore, was placed full of vinegar, and they having filled a sponge with vinegar, and having put [it] around a hyssop stalk, did put [it] to his mouth;

30 when, therefore, Jesus received the vinegar, he said, `It hath been finished;' and having bowed the head, gave up the spirit.

17 (A)They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, [a](B)carrying His own cross, to the place called (C)the Place of a Skull, which (D)in [b]Hebrew is called, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him, and with Him (E)two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. 19 Now Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written: “(F)JESUS THE NAZARENE, (G)THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 20 Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written (H)in [c]Hebrew, Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘(I)The King of the Jews’; rather, write that He said, ‘I am (J)King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “(K)What I have written, I have written.”

23 Then (L)the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made (M)four parts: a part to each soldier, and the [d]tunic also; but the tunic was seamless, woven [e]in one piece. 24 So they said to one another, “(N)Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be.” (O)This happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “They (P)divided My garments among themselves, and they cast [f]lots for My clothing.” Therefore the soldiers did these things.

25 (Q)Now beside the cross of Jesus stood (R)His mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and (S)Mary Magdalene. 26 So when Jesus saw His mother, and (T)the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, (U)Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then He *said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her into (V)his own household.

28 After this, Jesus, (W)knowing that all things had already been accomplished, (X)in order that the Scripture would be fulfilled, *said, (Y)I am thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so (Z)they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (AA)It is finished!” And He bowed His head and (AB)gave up His spirit.
