John 18:28-19:22

Jesus Before Pilate^(A)

²⁸Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.^(B) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,^(C) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.^(D) ²⁹So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”

³⁰“If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”

³¹Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”

“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. ³²This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.^(E)

³³Pilate then went back inside the palace,^(F) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”^(G)

³⁴“Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

³⁵“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

³⁶Jesus said, “My kingdom^(H) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.^(I) But now my kingdom is from another place.”^(J)

³⁷“You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.^(K) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”^(L)

³⁸“What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.^(M) ³⁹But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

⁴⁰They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.^(N)

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified^(O)

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.^(P) ²The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe ³and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”^(Q) And they slapped him in the face.^(R)

⁴Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out^(S) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”^(T) ⁵When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,^(U) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

⁶As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.^(V) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”^(W)

⁷The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,^(X) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”^(Y)

⁸When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, ⁹and he went back inside the palace.^(Z) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.^(AA) ¹⁰“Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

¹¹Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.^(AB) Therefore the one who handed me over to you^(AC) is guilty of a greater sin.”

¹²From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king^(AD) opposes Caesar.”

¹³When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat^(AE) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic^(AF) is Gabbatha). ¹⁴It was the day of Preparation^(AG) of the Passover; it was about noon.^(AH)

“Here is your king,”^(AI) Pilate said to the Jews.

¹⁵But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

¹⁶Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.^(AJ)

The Crucifixion of Jesus^(AK)

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. ¹⁷Carrying his own cross,^(AL) he went out to the place of the Skull^(AM) (which in Aramaic^(AN) is called Golgotha). ¹⁸There they crucified him, and with him two others^(AO)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

¹⁹Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,^(AP) the king of the jews.^(AQ) ²⁰Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,^(AR) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. ²¹The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”^(AS)

²²Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

The Death of Jesus^(A)

²⁸Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,^(B) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,^(C) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” ²⁹A jar of wine vinegar^(D) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. ³⁰When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”^(E) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Isaiah 53

53 Who has believed our message^(A)
    and to whom has the arm^(B) of the Lord been revealed?^(C)
²He grew up before him like a tender shoot,^(D)
    and like a root^(E) out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
    nothing in his appearance^(F) that we should desire him.
³He was despised and rejected by mankind,
    a man of suffering,^(G) and familiar with pain.^(H)
Like one from whom people hide^(I) their faces
    he was despised,^(J) and we held him in low esteem.

⁴Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,^(K)
yet we considered him punished by God,^(L)
    stricken by him, and afflicted.^(M)
⁵But he was pierced^(N) for our transgressions,^(O)
    he was crushed^(P) for our iniquities;
the punishment^(Q) that brought us peace^(R) was on him,
    and by his wounds^(S) we are healed.^(T)
⁶We all, like sheep, have gone astray,^(U)
    each of us has turned to our own way;^(V)
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity^(W) of us all.

⁷He was oppressed^(X) and afflicted,
    yet he did not open his mouth;^(Y)
he was led like a lamb^(Z) to the slaughter,^(AA)
    and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
    so he did not open his mouth.
⁸By oppression^[a] and judgment^(AB) he was taken away.
    Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;^(AC)
    for the transgression^(AD) of my people he was punished.^[b]
⁹He was assigned a grave with the wicked,^(AE)
    and with the rich^(AF) in his death,
though he had done no violence,^(AG)
    nor was any deceit in his mouth.^(AH)

¹⁰Yet it was the Lord’s will^(AI) to crush^(AJ) him and cause him to suffer,^(AK)
    and though the Lord makes^[c] his life an offering for sin,^(AL)
he will see his offspring^(AM) and prolong his days,
    and the will of the Lord will prosper^(AN) in his hand.
¹¹After he has suffered,^(AO)
    he will see the light^(AP) of life^[d] and be satisfied^[e];
by his knowledge^[f] my righteous servant^(AQ) will justify^(AR) many,
    and he will bear their iniquities.^(AS)
¹²Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,^[g]^(AT)
    and he will divide the spoils^(AU) with the strong,^[h]
because he poured out his life unto death,^(AV)
    and was numbered with the transgressors.^(AW)
For he bore^(AX) the sin of many,^(AY)
    and made intercession^(AZ) for the transgressors.
