Peter Denies Jesus Again

^25 (A)Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”

^17 (A)The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man's disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” ¹⁸ Now the servants^[a] and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. ^(B)Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.

⁶⁷ and seeing Peter ^(A)warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” ⁶⁸ But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway^[a] and ^(B)the rooster crowed.^{[b] 69} And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” ⁷⁰ But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” ⁷¹ But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” ⁷² And immediately the rooster crowed ^(C)a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, ^(D)“Before the rooster crows twice, you will ^(E)deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.^[c]

⁵⁸ And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” ⁵⁹ And after an interval of about an hour still another ^(A)insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” ⁶⁰ But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. ⁶¹ And the Lord turned and ^(B)looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, ^(C)“Before the rooster crows today, you will ^(D)deny me three times.” ⁶² And he went out and wept bitterly.

³⁷ And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? ^38 (A)Watch and ^(B)pray that you may not ^(C)enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

⁷¹ And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus ^(A)of Nazareth.” ⁷² And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” ⁷³ After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for ^(B)your accent betrays you.” ⁷⁴ Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. ⁷⁵ And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, ^(C)“Before the rooster crows, you will ^(D)deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

¹⁵ But Sarah denied it,^[a] saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

⁵⁶ Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.”
