Prigonirea ucenicilor
16 „V-am spus aceste lucruri pentru ca ele să(A) nu fie pentru voi un prilej de cădere. 2 Au(B) să vă dea afară din sinagogi, ba încă va veni vremea când oricine(C) vă va ucide să creadă că aduce o slujbă lui Dumnezeu. 3 Şi se vor purta astfel(D) cu voi, pentru că n-au cunoscut nici pe Tatăl, nici pe Mine. 4 V-am spus aceste(E) lucruri pentru ca, atunci când le va veni ceasul să se împlinească, să vă aduceţi aminte că vi le-am spus. Nu(F) vi le-am spus de la început, pentru că eram cu voi.
Lucrarea Mângâietorului
5 Acum Mă duc(G) la Cel ce M-a trimis şi nimeni din voi nu Mă întreabă: ‘Unde Te duci?’ 6 Dar, pentru că v-am spus aceste lucruri, întristarea(H)v-a umplut inima. 7 Totuşi vă spun adevărul: Vă este de folos să Mă duc, căci, dacă nu Mă duc Eu, Mângâietorul(I) nu va veni la voi, dar, dacă(J) Mă duc, vi-L voi trimite. 8 Şi când va veni El, va dovedi lumea vinovată în ce priveşte păcatul, neprihănirea şi judecata. 9 În ce priveşte(K) păcatul, fiindcă ei nu cred în Mine; 10 în ce priveşte neprihănirea(L), fiindcă(M)Mă duc la Tatăl şi nu Mă veţi mai vedea; 11 în ce priveşte(N) judecata, fiindcă stăpânitorul(O) lumii acesteia este judecat. 12 Mai am să vă spun multe lucruri, dar(P) acumnu le puteţi purta. 13 Când va veni Mângâietorul, Duhul(Q) adevărului, are să vă(R)călăuzească în tot adevărul, căci El nu va vorbi de la El, ci va vorbi tot ce va fi auzit şi vă va descoperi lucrurile viitoare. 14 El Mă va proslăvi pentru că va lua din ce este al Meu şi vă va descoperi. 15 Tot(S) ce are Tatăl este al Meu, de aceea am zis că va lua din ce este al Meu şi vă va descoperi.
Întristarea prefăcută în bucurie
16 Peste puţină(T)vreme, nu Mă veţi mai vedea, apoi iarăşi, peste puţină vreme, Mă veţi vedea, pentru că(U) Mă duc la Tatăl.” 17 La auzul acestor vorbe, unii din ucenicii Lui au zis între ei: „Ce înseamnă cuvintele acestea: ‘Peste puţină vreme, nu Mă veţi mai vedea’şi ‘Apoi iarăşi, peste puţină vreme, Mă veţi vedea’şi ‘Pentru că Mă duc la Tatăl’?” 18 Ei ziceau deci: „Ce înseamnă aceasta: ‘Peste puţină vreme’? Nu ştim ce vrea să spună.” 19 Isus a cunoscut că voiau să-L întrebe şi le-a zis: „Vă întrebaţi între voi ce înseamnă cuvintele: ‘Peste puţină vreme, nu Mă veţi mai vedea’ şi ‘Apoi iarăşi, peste puţină vreme, Mă veţi vedea’? 20 Adevărat, adevărat vă spun că voi veţi plânge şi vă veţi tângui, iar lumea se va bucura; vă veţi întrista, dar întristarea voastră se va preface în bucurie. 21 Femeia(V), când este în durerile naşterii, se întristează, pentru că i-a sosit ceasul, dar, după ce a născut pruncul, nu-şi mai aduce aminte de suferinţă, de bucurie că s-a născut un om pe lume. 22 Tot aşa(W) şi voi, acum sunteţi plini de întristare, dar Eu vă voi vedea iarăşi, inima vi se(X)va bucura şi nimeni nu vă va răpi bucuria voastră. 23 În ziua aceea, nu Mă veţi mai întreba de nimic. Adevărat(Y), adevărat vă spun că, orice veţi cere de la Tatăl, în Numele Meu, vă va da. 24 Până acum n-aţi cerut nimic în Numele Meu: cereţi şi veţi căpăta, pentru ca(Z) bucuria voastră să fie deplină.

25 V-am spus aceste lucruri în pilde. Vine ceasul când nu vă voi mai vorbi în pilde, ci vă voi vorbi desluşit despre Tatăl. 26 În ziua aceea(AA), veţi cere în Numele Meu şi nu vă zic că voi ruga pe Tatăl pentru voi. 27 Căci(AB) Tatăl Însuşi vă iubeşte, pentru că M-aţi iubit şi aţi(AC)crezut că am ieşit de la Dumnezeu. 28 Am ieşit(AD) de la Tatăl şi am venit în lume; acum las lumea şi Mă duc la Tatăl.” 29 Ucenicii Săi I-au zis: „Iată că acum vorbeşti desluşit şi nu spui nicio pildă. 30 Acum cunoaştem că(AE) ştii toate lucrurile şi n-ai nevoie să Te întrebe cineva, de aceea credem(AF) că ai ieşit de la Dumnezeu.” 31 „Acum credeţi?” le-a răspuns Isus. 32 „Iată(AG)că vine ceasul, şi a şi venit, când veţi fi risipiţi fiecare(AH) la ale lui, şi pe Mine Mă veţi lăsa singur, dar(AI) nu sunt singur, căci Tatăl este cu Mine. 33 V-am spus aceste lucruri ca să aveţi pace în(AJ) Mine. În(AK) lume veţi avea necazuri, dar(AL)îndrăzniţi, Eu am biruit(AM)lumea.”

Jezus belooft de Heilige Geest
16 ‘Ik heb dit verteld omdat Ik wil voorkomen dat jullie je geloof verliezen. 2 Want de Joden zullen jullie niet alleen uit de synagoge gooien, maar zelfs doden en dan denken zij ook nog God daarmee een grote dienst te bewijzen. 3 Zij zullen dat doen, omdat zij de Vader en Mij niet kennen. 4 Ik zeg dit hierom: als een en ander gebeurt, zullen jullie je mijn woorden herinneren. Tot nu toe heb Ik hier niets over gezegd, omdat Ik nog bij jullie was.
5 Maar nu ga Ik terug naar Hem die Mij gestuurd heeft en niemand vraagt waar Ik naar toe ga. 6 Mijn woorden maken jullie verdrietig. 7 Maar wat Ik zeg, is de waarheid, het is beter voor jullie dat Ik wegga, anders kan mijn Helper niet bij jullie komen. Als Ik wegga, stuur Ik Hem naar jullie toe. 8 En wanneer Hij komt, zal Hij de mensen in de wereld overtuigen van zonde, rechtvaardigheid en oordeel. 9 Van zonde omdat zij weigeren in Mij te geloven. 10 Van rechtvaardigheid, omdat Ik naar de Vader ga en jullie Mij niet meer zullen zien. 11 Het oordeel houdt in dat de heerser van deze wereld al geoordeeld is.
12 Ik zou jullie nog veel meer moeten zeggen, maar jullie kunnen het nog niet verdragen. 13 Maar als de Heilige Geest komt, zal Hij jullie de weg wijzen naar de volledige waarheid. Wat Hij jullie zal zeggen, heeft Hij niet uit Zichzelf, maar Hij geeft door wat Hij hoort, en Hij zal bekendmaken wat komen gaat. 14 Door jullie te vertellen wat Hij van Mij hoort, zal Hij Mij verheerlijken. 15 Alles wat van de Vader is, is ook van Mij. Daarom zeg Ik dat Hij alles wat Hij van Mij hoort, aan jullie zal vertellen.
16 Nog even en jullie zullen Mij niet meer zien. En niet lang daarna zullen jullie Mij weer terugzien.’ 17 Enkele leerlingen zeiden tegen elkaar: ‘Wat zou Hij bedoelen met “nog even” en “Ik ga naar de Vader”? 18 Wij begrijpen er niets van!’ 19 Jezus wist wat zij Hem wilden vragen en zei: ‘Jullie vragen je zeker af wat Ik bedoel met: “Nog even en jullie zien Mij niet meer. En niet lang daarna zullen jullie Mij weer terugzien.” 20 Luister goed! De mensen zullen blij zijn over wat er met Mij gebeurt, maar jullie zullen verdrietig zijn. Maar jullie verdriet zal omslaan in blijdschap. 21 Net als bij een zwangere vrouw die moet bevallen. Tijdens de geboorte heeft zij veel pijn. Maar als het voorbij is, denkt zij niet meer aan de pijn en de moeite, zo blij en gelukkig is zij met haar kind.
22 Jullie zijn nu wel verdrietig omdat Ik wegga, maar Ik zal jullie terugzien. Dan zullen jullie blij zijn en die blijdschap kan niemand jullie meer afnemen. 23 Als het zover is, hoeven jullie Mij niets meer te vragen. Luister goed, Ik zeg dat jullie dan alles rechtstreeks aan de Vader kunnen vragen en Hij zal het jullie geven in mijn naam. 24 Tot nu toe hebben jullie nog niet in mijn naam gebeden. Bid en jullie zullen ontvangen. Dat zal jullie grote vreugde geven.
25 Ik heb tot nu toe veel beeldspraak gebruikt, maar er komt een moment dat dat niet meer nodig is. Dan kan Ik jullie zonder beperking over de Vader vertellen. 26 Als het zover is, kunnen jullie in mijn naam bidden. Ik hoef dan niets meer voor jullie aan de Vader te vragen, 27 want de Vader houdt Zelf van jullie omdat jullie van Mij houden en gelooft dat Ik bij Hem vandaan kom. 28 Ik ben van de Vader naar de wereld gekomen. Nu verlaat Ik de wereld en ga terug naar de Vader.’ 29 Zijn leerlingen zeiden: ‘Dat is tenminste niet zo onbegrijpelijk, nu spreekt U duidelijke taal. 30 Wij weten nu dat U alles weet en dat niemand U iets hoeft te vragen. Daarom geloven wij dat U van God komt.’ 31 ‘Geloven jullie het nu eindelijk?’ antwoordde Jezus. 32 ‘Er komt een tijd dat jullie uiteengejaagd worden, dan gaat ieder zijn eigen weg en laat Mij in de steek. Maar echt alleen zal Ik niet zijn, omdat de Vader bij Mij is. 33 Dit heb Ik jullie verteld, omdat Ik wil dat jullie mijn vrede bewaren. In de wereld zullen jullie het zwaar te verduren krijgen. Maar houd moed! Ik heb de wereld overwonnen.’

16 “All this(A) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(B) 2 They will put you out of the synagogue;(C) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(D) 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(E) 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(F) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(G) 5 but now I am going to him who sent me.(H) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(I) 6 Rather, you are filled with grief(J) because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(K) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(L) 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin,(M) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(N) because I am going to the Father,(O) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(P) now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(Q) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(R) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(S) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(T) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy
16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(U) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(V)
17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(W) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(X) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(Y) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(Z) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(AA) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(AB) but I will see you again(AC) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(AD) 23 In that day(AE) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(AF) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(AG) and your joy will be complete.(AH)
25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(AI) a time is coming(AJ) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(AK) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(AL) and have believed that I came from God.(AM) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(AN)
29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(AO) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(AP) that you came from God.”(AQ)
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(AR) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(AS) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(AT) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(AU)
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(AV) In this world you will have trouble.(AW) But take heart! I have overcome(AX) the world.”
