John 16:8-17:15

⁸^(A)And when he comes, he will ^(B)convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: ⁹concerning sin, ^(C)because they do not believe in me; ¹⁰^(D)concerning righteousness, ^(E)because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; ¹¹^(F)concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world ^(G)is judged.

¹²“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. ¹³When ^(H)the Spirit of truth comes, ^(I)he will ^(J)guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but ^(K)whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. ¹⁴He will ^(L)glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. ¹⁵^(M)All that the Father has is mine; ^(N)therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

¹⁶^(O)“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and ^(P)again a little while, and you will see me.” ¹⁷So ^(Q)some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ^(R)‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ^(S)‘because I am going to the Father’?” ¹⁸So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? ^(T)We do not know what he is talking about.” ¹⁹^(U)Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? ²⁰Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(V)you will weep and lament, but ^(W)the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but ^(X)your sorrow will turn into joy. ²¹^(Y)When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. ²²^(Z)So also you have sorrow now, but ^(AA)I will see you again, and ^(AB)your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. ²³^(AC)In that day you will ^(AD)ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(AE)whatever you ask of the Father in my name, ^(AF)he will give it to you. ²⁴Until now you have asked nothing in my name. ^(AG)Ask, and you will receive, ^(AH)that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

²⁵“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. ^(AI)The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. ²⁶In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; ²⁷^(AJ)for the Father himself loves you, because ^(AK)you have loved me and ^(AL)have believed that I came from God.^[a] ²⁸^(AM)I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now ^(AN)I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

²⁹His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not ^(AO)using figurative speech! ³⁰Now we know that ^(AP)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that ^(AQ)you came from God.” ³¹Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? ³²Behold, ^(AR)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when ^(AS)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and ^(AT)will leave me alone. ^(AU)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. ³³I have said these things to you, that ^(AV)in me you may have peace. ^(AW)In the world you will have ^(AX)tribulation. But ^(AY)take heart; ^(AZ)I have overcome the world.”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 When Jesus had spoken these words, ^(BA)he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, ^(BB)the hour has come; ^(BC)glorify your Son that the Son may ^(BD)glorify you, ²since ^(BE)you have given him authority over all flesh, ^(BF)to give eternal life to all ^(BG)whom you have given him. ³^(BH)And this is eternal life, ^(BI)that they know you, ^(BJ)the only ^(BK)true God, and ^(BL)Jesus Christ whom you have sent. ⁴I ^(BM)glorified you on earth, ^(BN)having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. ⁵And now, Father, ^(BO)glorify me in your own presence with the glory ^(BP)that I had with you ^(BQ)before the world existed.

⁶^(BR)“I have manifested your name to the people ^(BS)whom you gave me out of the world. ^(BT)Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. ⁷Now they know that everything ^(BU)that you have given me is from you. ⁸For I have given them ^(BV)the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that ^(BW)I came from you; and ^(BX)they have believed that you sent me. ⁹I am praying for them. ^(BY)I am not praying for the world but for those ^(BZ)whom you have given me, for ^(CA)they are yours. ¹⁰^(CB)All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and ^(CC)I am glorified in them. ¹¹And I am no longer in the world, but ^(CD)they are in the world, and ^(CE)I am coming to you. ^(CF)Holy Father, ^(CG)keep them in your name, ^(CH)which you have given me, ^(CI)that they may be one, ^(CJ)even as we are one. ¹²^(CK)While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have ^(CL)guarded them, and ^(CM)not one of them has been lost except ^(CN)the son of destruction, ^(CO)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. ¹³But now ^(CP)I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have ^(CQ)my joy fulfilled in themselves. ¹⁴^(CR)I have given them your word, and ^(CS)the world has hated them ^(CT)because they are not of the world, ^(CU)just as I am not of the world. ¹⁵I ^(CV)do not ask that you ^(CW)take them out of the world, but that you ^(CX)keep them from ^(CY)the evil one.^[b]
