^2 (A)They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, ^(B)the hour is coming when ^(C)whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.

²² (His parents said these things ^(A)because they feared the Jews, for ^(B)the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should ^(C)confess Jesus^[a] to be Christ, ^(D)he was to be put out of the synagogue.)

^9 (A)“I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things in opposing the name of ^(B)Jesus of Nazareth. ^10 (C)And I did so in Jerusalem. I not only locked up many of the saints in prison after receiving authority ^(D)from the chief priests, but ^(E)when they were put to death I cast my vote against them. ¹¹ And ^(F)I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to make them ^(G)blaspheme, and ^(H)in raging fury against them I ^(I)persecuted them even to foreign cities.

² For I bear them witness that ^(A)they have a zeal for God, ^(B)but not according to knowledge. ³ For, being ignorant of ^(C)the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness.

^3 (A)“I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated ^(B)at the feet of ^(C)Gamaliel^{[a] (D)}according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, ^(E)being zealous for God ^(F)as all of you are this day. ^4 (G)I persecuted ^(H)this Way ^(I)to the death, binding and delivering to prison both men and women,

²⁸ And ^(A)do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him ^(B)who can destroy both soul and body in hell.^[a]

⁹ When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under ^(A)the altar ^(B)the souls of those who had been slain ^(C)for the word of God and for ^(D)the witness they had borne.

¹⁹ And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that in one synagogue after another ^(A)I imprisoned and ^(B)beat those who believed in you. ²⁰ And when the blood of Stephen ^(C)your witness was being shed, ^(D)I myself was standing by and ^(E)approving and ^(F)watching over the garments of those who killed him.’ ²¹ And he said to me, ‘Go, for I will send you ^(G)far away to the Gentiles.’”

²² Up to this word they listened to him. Then they raised their voices and said, ^(H)“Away with such a fellow from the earth! For ^(I)he should not be allowed to live.” ²³ And as they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air,

⁴² Nevertheless, ^(A)many even of the authorities believed in him, but ^(B)for fear of the Pharisees they did not ^(C)confess it, so that they would not be ^(D)put out of the synagogue;
