²² If I had not come and spoken to them,^(A) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.^(B)

⁴¹ Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.^(A)

¹⁷ If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.^(A)

²⁰ For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made,^(A) so that people are without excuse.^(B)

³⁰ In the past God overlooked^(A) such ignorance,^(B) but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.^(C)

⁴⁸ There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them^(A) at the last day.

³¹ My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before^(A) you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy^(B) for unjust gain.^{(C) 32} Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs^(D) with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.^(E)

³³ “When all this comes true—and it surely will—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.^(F)”

⁴ It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened,^(A) who have tasted the heavenly gift,^(B) who have shared in the Holy Spirit,^{(C) 5} who have tasted the goodness^(D) of the word of God^(E) and the powers of the coming age ⁶ and who have fallen^[a] away, to be brought back to repentance.^(F) To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God^(G) all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. ⁷ Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. ⁸ But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed.^(H) In the end it will be burned.

¹⁸ Whoever believes in him is not condemned,^(A) but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.^{(B) 19} This is the verdict: Light^(C) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.^{(D) 20} Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.^{(E) 21} But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
