^19 (A)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because ^(B)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

⁴ Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for ^(A)he who is in you is greater than ^(B)he who is in the world. ^5 (C)They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and ^(D)the world listens to them.

^14 (A)I have given them your word, and ^(B)the world has hated them ^(C)because they are not of the world, ^(D)just as I am not of the world. ¹⁵ I ^(E)do not ask that you ^(F)take them out of the world, but that you ^(G)keep them from ^(H)the evil one.^{[a] 16 (I)}They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

^4 (A)even as he ^(B)chose us in him ^(C)before the foundation of the world, that we should be ^(D)holy and blameless before him. In love ^5 (E)he predestined us^[a] for ^(F)adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, ^(G)according to the purpose of his will, ^6 (H)to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in ^(I)the Beloved. ^7 (J)In him we have ^(K)redemption ^(L)through his blood, ^(M)the forgiveness of our trespasses, ^(N)according to the riches of his grace, ⁸ which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight ^9 (O)making known^[b] to us the mystery of his will, ^(P)according to his purpose, which he ^(Q)set forth in Christ ¹⁰ as a plan for ^(R)the fullness of time, ^(S)to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

¹¹ In him we have obtained ^(T)an inheritance, ^(U)having been predestined ^(V)according to the purpose of him who works all things according to ^(W)the counsel of his will,

³ For ^(A)we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. ⁴ But when ^(B)the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, ⁵ he saved us, ^(C)not because of works done by us in righteousness, but ^(D)according to his own mercy, by ^(E)the washing of regeneration and ^(F)renewal of the Holy Spirit, ⁶ whom he ^(G)poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, ⁷ so that ^(H)being justified by his grace we might become ^(I)heirs ^(J)according to the hope of eternal life.

^2 (A)in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following ^(B)the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in ^(C)the sons of disobedience— ³ among whom we all once lived in ^(D)the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body^[a] and the mind, and ^(E)were by nature ^(F)children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.^{[b] 4} But^[c] God, being ^(G)rich in mercy, ^(H)because of the great love with which he loved us, ⁵ even ^(I)when we were dead in our trespasses, ^(J)made us alive together with Christ—^(K)by grace you have been saved—

¹⁶ You did not choose me, but ^(A)I chose you and appointed you that you should go and ^(B)bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that ^(C)whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

¹⁹ We know that we are from God, and ^(A)the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

²⁰ And we know that the Son of God has come and ^(B)has given us understanding, so that we may know ^(C)him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and ^(D)eternal life.

⁹ But you are ^(A)a chosen race, ^(B)a royal ^(C)priesthood, ^(D)a holy nation, ^(E)a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you ^(F)out of darkness into ^(G)his marvelous light. ^10 (H)Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

¹¹ Beloved, I urge you ^(I)as sojourners and exiles ^(J)to abstain from the passions of the flesh, ^(K)which wage war against your soul. ^12 (L)Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, ^(M)they may see your good deeds and glorify God on ^(N)the day of visitation.
