The Way to the Father

14 “Don’t let your heart be troubled.(A) Believe[a] in God; (B) believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going (C) to prepare a place for you? If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again(D) and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also.(E) You know the way to where I am going.”[b](F)

“Lord,” Thomas(G) said, “we don’t know where you’re going. How can we know the way?”

Jesus told him, “I am(H) the way,(I) the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will also know[c] my Father.(J) From now on you do know him(K) and have seen him.”

Jesus Reveals the Father

“Lord,” said Philip,(L) “show us the Father, and that’s enough for us.”

Jesus said to him, “Have I been among you all this time and you do not know me, Philip? The one who has seen me has seen the Father.(M) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?(N) The words I speak to you I do not speak on my own.(O) The Father who lives in me does his works.(P) 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Otherwise, believe[d] because of the works themselves.(Q)

Praying in Jesus’s Name

12 “Truly I tell you, the one who believes in me(R) will also do the works that I do. And he will do even greater works than these,(S) because I am going to the Father.(T) 13 Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it so that the Father may be glorified(U) in the Son.(V) 14 If you ask me[e] anything in my name,(W) I will do it.[f](X)

Another Counselor Promised

15 “If you love me, you will keep[g] my commands.(Y) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor[h](Z) to be with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit(AA) of truth.(AB) The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be[i] in you.(AC)

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see me,(AD) but you will see me.(AE) Because I live, you will live(AF) too. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father,(AG) you are in me, and I am in you. 21 The one who has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(AH) And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father.(AI) I also will love him and will reveal myself to him.”

22 Judas(AJ) (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it you’re going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” (AK)

23 Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.(AL) 24 The one who doesn’t love me will not keep my words. The word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me.(AM)

25 “I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit,(AN) whom the Father will send(AO) in my name, will teach you all things(AP) and remind you of everything I have told you.(AQ)

Jesus’s Gift of Peace

27 “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.(AR) 28 You have heard me tell you, ‘I am going away(AS) and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father,(AT) because the Father is greater than I.(AU) 29 I have told you now before it happens(AV) so that when it does happen you may believe. 30 I will not talk with you much longer, because the ruler of the world(AW) is coming. He has no power over me.[j](AX) 31 On the contrary, so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do as the Father commanded me.

“Get up; let’s leave this place.

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am(AY) the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. Every branch in me that does not produce fruit he removes,(AZ) and he prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit. You are already clean(BA) because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.(BB) I am the vine; (BC) you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit,(BD) because you can do nothing without me. If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside(BE) like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire,(BF) and they are burned.(BG) If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.(BH) My Father is glorified(BI) by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be[k] my disciples.

Christlike Love

“As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love.(BJ) 10 If you keep my commands you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.(BK)

11 “I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.(BL)

12 “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved(BM) you. 13 No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life(BN) for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master[l](BO) is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you.(BP) I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask(BQ) the Father in my name,(BR) he will give you.(BS)

17 “This is what I command you: Love one another.

Persecutions Predicted

18 “If the world hates(BT) you, understand that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen(BU) you out of it, the world hates you. 20 Remember the word I spoke to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’(BV) If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word,(BW) they will also keep yours. 21 But they will do all these things to you on account of my name,(BX) because they don’t know(BY) the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin.(BZ) Now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 The one who hates me also hates my Father.(CA) 24 If I had not done the works(CB) among them that no one else has done,(CC) they would not be guilty of sin.(CD) Now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But this happened so that the statement written in their law might be fulfilled:(CE) They hated me for no reason.[m](CF)

The Counselor’s Ministry

26 “When the Counselor(CG) comes, the one I will send to you from the Father(CH) —the Spirit of truth(CI) who proceeds from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 You also will testify,(CJ) because you have been with me from the beginning.

16 “I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling. They will ban you from the synagogues.(CK) In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service(CL) to God. They will do these things because they haven’t known(CM) the Father or me. But I have told you these things so that when their time[n] comes you will remember(CN) I told them to you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going away(CO) to him who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(CP) Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth.(CQ) It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you.(CR) When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: About sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father(CS) and you will no longer see me; 11 and about judgment,(CT) because the ruler of this world(CU) has been judged.(CV)

12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.(CW) 13 When the Spirit of truth(CX) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(CY) For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. 15 Everything the Father(CZ) has is mine.(DA) This is why I told you that he takes from what is mine and will declare it to you.(DB)

Sorrow Turned to Joy

16 “In a little while,(DC) you will no longer see me; (DD) again in a little while, you will see me.”[o]

17 Then some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this he’s telling us: ‘In a little while, you will not see me; again in a little while, you will see me,’ and, ‘Because I am going to the Father’(DE)?” 18 They said, “What is this he is saying,[p] ‘In a little while’? We don’t know what he’s talking about.”

19 Jesus knew they wanted to ask him, and so he said to them, “Are you asking one another about what I said, ‘In a little while, you will not see me; again in a little while, you will see me’? 20 Truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn,(DF) but the world will rejoice. You will become sorrowful,(DG) but your sorrow will turn to joy. 21 When a woman is in labor, she has pain(DH) because her time has come. But when she has given birth to a child,(DI) she no longer remembers the suffering because of the joy that a person has been born into the world. 22 So you also have sorrow[q] now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice,(DJ) and no one will take away your joy from you.(DK)

23 “In that day you will not ask me anything. Truly I tell you, anything you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.(DL) 24 Until now you have asked for nothing in my name.(DM) Ask and you will receive,(DN) so that your joy may be complete.(DO)

Jesus the Victor

25 “I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. A time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 On that day you will ask(DP) in my name, and(DQ) I am not telling you that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved(DR) me and have believed that I came from God.[r](DS) 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”(DT)

29 His disciples said, “Look, now you’re speaking plainly and not using any figurative language. 30 Now we know that you know everything(DU) and don’t need anyone to question you. By this we believe that you came from God.”(DV)

31 Jesus responded to them, “Do you now believe? 32 Indeed, an hour is coming, and has come,(DW) when each of you will be scattered to his own home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.(DX) 33 I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”

Jesus Prays for Himself

17 Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son(DY) may glorify you,(DZ) since you gave him authority over all people,[s](EA) so that he may give eternal life(EB) to everyone you have given him.(EC) This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only(ED) true(EE) God, and the one you have sent(EF) —Jesus Christ.(EG) I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do. Now, Father,(EH) glorify me in your presence with that glory(EI) I had with you before the world existed.(EJ)

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

“I have revealed your name(EK) to the people you gave me(EL) from the world.(EM) They were yours, you gave them to me,(EN) and they have kept your word.(EO) Now they know that everything you have given me is from you, because I have given them the words you gave me.(EP) They have received them and have known for certain that I came from you.(EQ) They have believed that you sent me.

“I pray[t] for them. I am not praying for the world but for those you have given me,(ER) because they are yours. 10 Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine,(ES) and I am glorified in them. 11 I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you.(ET) Holy(EU) Father, protect[u] them by your name(EV) that you have given me, so that they may be one(EW) as we are(EX) one. 12 While I was with them, I was protecting them by your name that you have given me. I guarded(EY) them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction,[v] so that the Scripture(EZ) may be fulfilled.(FA) 13 Now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy completed in them. 14 I have given them your word. The world hated(FB) them because they are not of the world,(FC) just as I am not of the world.(FD) 15 I am not praying that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.(FE) 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.(FF) 17 Sanctify(FG) them by the truth; (FH) your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world,(FI) I also have sent them into the world. 19 I sanctify myself for them, so that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their word. 21 May they all be one,(FJ) as you, Father, are in me and I am in you.(FK) May they also be[w] in us, so that the world may believe you sent me. 22 I have given them the glory(FL) you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them and you are in me,(FM) so that they may be made completely one, that the world may know you have sent me and have loved(FN) them as you have loved me.(FO)

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am,(FP) so that they will see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the world’s foundation. 25 Righteous Father, the world has not known you. However, I have known you,(FQ) and they have known that you sent me. 26 I made your name(FR) known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love you have loved me with may be in them and I may be in them.”(FS)

Jesus, the Way to the Father

14 “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home.[a] If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?[b] When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going.”

“No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is.[c] From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.”

Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. 11 Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do.

12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. 13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. 14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, obey[d] my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate,[e] who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.[f] 18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. 19 Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. 20 When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”

22 Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that name) said to him, “Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large?”

23 Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. 24 Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. 25 I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. 26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. 28 Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am. 29 I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe.

30 “I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me, 31 but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let’s be going.

Jesus, the True Vine

15 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.

“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. 10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! 12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. 16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

The World’s Hatred

18 “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. 19 The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. 20 Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you. 21 They will do all this to you because of me, for they have rejected the one who sent me. 22 They would not be guilty if I had not come and spoken to them. But now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Anyone who hates me also hates my Father. 24 If I hadn’t done such miraculous signs among them that no one else could do, they would not be guilty. But as it is, they have seen everything I did, yet they still hate me and my Father. 25 This fulfills what is written in their Scriptures[g]: ‘They hated me without cause.’

26 “But I will send you the Advocate[h]—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me. 27 And you must also testify about me because you have been with me from the beginning of my ministry.

16 “I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith. For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God. This is because they have never known the Father or me. Yes, I’m telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate[i] won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.

12 “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’

Sadness Will Be Turned to Joy

16 “In a little while you won’t see me anymore. But a little while after that, you will see me again.”

17 Some of the disciples asked each other, “What does he mean when he says, ‘In a little while you won’t see me, but then you will see me,’ and ‘I am going to the Father’? 18 And what does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand.”

19 Jesus realized they wanted to ask him about it, so he said, “Are you asking yourselves what I meant? I said in a little while you won’t see me, but a little while after that you will see me again. 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy. 21 It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world. 22 So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy. 23 At that time you won’t need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name. 24 You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.

25 “I have spoken of these matters in figures of speech, but soon I will stop speaking figuratively and will tell you plainly all about the Father. 26 Then you will ask in my name. I’m not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf, 27 for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God.[j] 28 Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and now I will leave the world and return to the Father.”

29 Then his disciples said, “At last you are speaking plainly and not figuratively. 30 Now we understand that you know everything, and there’s no need to question you. From this we believe that you came from God.”

31 Jesus asked, “Do you finally believe? 32 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. 33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

The Prayer of Jesus

17 After saying all these things, Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you. For you have given him authority over everyone. He gives eternal life to each one you have given him. And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began.

“I have revealed you[k] to the ones you gave me from this world. They were always yours. You gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything I have is a gift from you, for I have passed on to them the message you gave me. They accepted it and know that I came from you, and they believe you sent me.

“My prayer is not for the world, but for those you have given me, because they belong to you. 10 All who are mine belong to you, and you have given them to me, so they bring me glory. 11 Now I am departing from the world; they are staying in this world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father, you have given me your name;[l] now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are. 12 During my time here, I protected them by the power of the name you gave me.[m] I guarded them so that not one was lost, except the one headed for destruction, as the Scriptures foretold.

13 “Now I am coming to you. I told them many things while I was with them in this world so they would be filled with my joy. 14 I have given them your word. And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15 I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to this world any more than I do. 17 Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth. 18 Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world. 19 And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth.

20 “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. 21 I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.

22 “I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. 24 Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began!

25 “O righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. 26 I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them.”
