John 13

Jesus teaches his disciples humility
13Â 1-5Â Before the festival of the Passover began, Jesus realised that the time had come for him to leave this world and return to the Father. He had loved those who were his own in this world and he loved them to the end. By supper-time, the devil had already put the thought of betraying Jesus in the mind of Judas Iscariot, Simonâs son. Jesus, with the full knowledge that the Father had put everything into his hands and that he had come from God and was going to God, rose from the supper-table, took off his outer clothes, picked up a towel and fastened it round his waist. Then he poured water into the basin and began to wash the disciplesâ feet and to dry them with the towel around his waist.
6Â So he came to Simon Peter, who said to him, âLord, are you going to wash my feet?â
7Â âYou do not realise now what I am doing,â replied Jesus, âbut later on you will understand.â
8Â Then Peter said to him, âYou must never wash my feet!â âUnless you let me wash you, Peter,â replied Jesus, âyou cannot share my lot.â
9Â âThen,â returned Simon Peter, âpleaseânot just my feet but my hands and my face as well!â
10Â âThe man who has bathed,â returned Jesus, âonly needs to wash his feet to be clean all over. And you are cleanâthough not all of you.â
11Â (For Jesus knew his betrayer and that is why he said, âthough not all of youâ.)
12-17Â When Jesus had washed their feet and put on his clothes, he sat down and spoke to them, âDo you realise what I have just done to you? You call me âteacherâ and âLordâ and you are quite right, for I am your teacher and your Lord. But if I, your teacher and Lord, have washed your feet, you must be ready to wash one anotherâs feet. I have given you this as an example so that you may do as I have done. Believe me, the servant is not greater than his master and the messenger is not greater than the man who sent him. Once you have realised these things, you will find your happiness in doing them.
Jesus foretells his betrayal
18Â âI am not speaking about all of youâI know the men I have chosen. But let this scripture be fulfilledââHe who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against meâ.
19-20Â From now onwards, I shall tell you about things before they happen, so that when they do happen, you may believe that I am the one I claim to be. I tell you truly that anyone who accepts my messenger will be accepting me, and anyone who accepts me will be accepting the one who sent me.â
21Â After Jesus had said this, he was clearly in anguish of soul, and he added solemnly, âI tell you plainly, one of you is going to betray me.â
22-24Â At this the disciples stared at each other, completely mystified as to whom he could mean. And it happened that one of them who Jesus loved, was sitting very close to him. So Simon Peter nodded to this man and said, âTell us who he means.â
25Â He simply leaned forward on Jesusâ shoulder, and asked, âLord, who is it?â
26-27Â And Jesus answered, âIt is the one I am going to give this piece of bread to, after I have dipped it in the dish.â Then he took a piece of bread, dipped it in the dish and gave it to Simonâs son, Judas Iscariot. After he had taken the piece of bread, Satan entered his heart. Then Jesus said to him, âBe quick about your business!â
28-30Â No one else at table knew what he meant in telling him this. Indeed, some of them thought that, since Judas had charge of the purse, Jesus was telling him to buy what they needed for the festival, or that he should give something to the poor. So Judas took the piece of bread and went out quicklyâinto the night.
31-35Â When he had gone, Jesus spoke, âNow comes the glory of the Son of Man, and the glory of God in him! If God is glorified through him then God will glorify the Son of Manâand that without delay. Oh, my children, I am with you such a short time! You will look for me and I have to tell you as I told the Jews, âWhere I am going, you cannot follow.â Now I am giving you a new commandâlove one another. Just as I have loved you, so you must love one another. This is how all men will know that you are my disciples, because you have such love for one another.â
36Â Simon Peter said to him, âLord, where are you going?â âI am going,â replied Jesus, âwhere you cannot follow now, though you will follow me later.â
37Â âLord, why canât I follow you now? said Peter. âI would lay down my life for you!â
38Â âWould you lay down your life for me?â replied Jesus. âBelieve me, you will disown me three times before the cock crows!â

Worldwide English (New Testament)
13Â Before the Passover Feast had started, Jesus saw that the time had come for him to leave this world. The time had come for him to go back to his Father. He loved his own people who were in the world. And he loved them the same way right to the end.
2Â He and his disciples were eating together. The devil had already put it into Judas' heart to give Jesus over to people who hated him. (Judas was the son of Simon Iscariot.)
3Â Jesus knew that his Father had put everything into his hands. He knew he had come from God. He knew he was going back to God.
4Â Jesus stood up where he had been eating. He took off his outer clothing. And he took a towel and tied it around him.
5Â Then he poured water into a pan and began to wash the disciples' feet. He wiped their feet with the towel he had tied around him.
6Â He came to Simon Peter. Peter said to him, `Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'
7Â Jesus answered him, `You do not understand now what I am doing, but you will understand it later.'
8Â Peter said to him, `You will never wash my feet!' Jesus answered him, `If I do not wash you, then you do not belong to me.'
9Â Simon Peter said to him, `Lord, wash my feet, and my hands, and my head also!'
10Â Jesus said, `A person who has bathed himself needs to wash his feet only. He is all clean. You are clean, but not all of you.'
11Â Jesus knew who was going to give him over to people who hated him. That is why he said, `You are not all clean.'
12Â After Jesus had finished washing their feet, he took his gown and sat down again. `Do you understand what I have done to you?' he asked.
13Â `You call me Master and Lord. What you say is right. I am your Master and Lord.
14Â I am your Lord and Master and have washed your feet. If I do that, then you should wash one another's feet.
15Â I have shown you what to do. Now you do as I have done.
16Â I tell you the truth. The servant is not better than his master. The one who is sent is not better than the one who sent him.
17Â Do you understand what I have told you? If you do, you will have much happiness for doing it.
18Â I am not talking about all of you but I know the people I have chosen. So God's word comes true. The holy writings say, "He who is eating my bread has turned against me."
19Â `I am telling you this now before it happens. So when it happens you will believe who I am.
20Â I tell you the truth. The person who receives the one I send, receives me. He that receives me, receives the one who sent me.'
21Â When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in his heart. He said, `I tell you the truth. One of you will give me over to people who hate me.'
22Â The disciples looked at one another. They did not know which one of them Jesus was talking about.
23Â The disciple Jesus loved was at his right side.
24Â Simon Peter nodded to that disciple. He said, `Tell us who he is talking about.'
25Â He who was at Jesus' right side said to Jesus, `Lord, who is it?'
26Â Jesus answered, `I will put a piece of bread in the dish. Then I will give it to that one.' He put in the bread, then he took it and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
27Â Right after Jesus had given the bread, Satan came into Judas. Then Jesus said to him, `What you are going to do, do right away.'
28Â No one at the table knew why Jesus said, `Do it right away.'
29Â Judas had the money bag. Some thought that Jesus was telling him, `Buy what we need for the feast,' or that he wanted Judas to give something to the poor people.
30Â Judas went out right after he had taken the bread. It was night.
31Â When he had gone out, Jesus said, `Now the Son of Man is very great. And he has made God's name great.
32Â If he has made God's name great, God also will make him great by his own power. He will do it right away.
33Â My children, I am with you for a short time longer. You will look for me. What I said to the Jews I say to you now: "You cannot come to the place where I am going."
34Â I give you a new law. That law is, "Love each other." As I have loved you, so you also love each other.
35Â This is how all people will know that you are my disciples.'
36Â Simon Peter said to him, `Lord, where are you going?' Jesus answered him, `You cannot go with me where I am going now. Later on you will go with me.'
37Â Peter said to him, `Lord, why can I not go with you now? I am willing to die for you.'
38Â Jesus answered him, `Will you die for me? I tell you the truth. Before the cock calls, you will say three times that you do not know me.'

Jesus Washes His Disciplesâ Feet
13Â It was just before the Passover Festival.(A) Jesus knew that the hour had come(B) for him to leave this world and go to the Father.(C) Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
2Â The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.(D) 3Â Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power,(E) and that he had come from God(F) and was returning to God; 4Â so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.(G) 5Â After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciplesâ feet,(H) drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6Â He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, âLord, are you going to wash my feet?â
7Â Jesus replied, âYou do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.â(I)
8Â âNo,â said Peter, âyou shall never wash my feet.â
Jesus answered, âUnless I wash you, you have no part with me.â
9Â âThen, Lord,â Simon Peter replied, ânot just my feet but my hands and my head as well!â
10Â Jesus answered, âThose who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean,(J) though not every one of you.â(K) 11Â For he knew who was going to betray him,(L) and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12Â When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. âDo you understand what I have done for you?â he asked them. 13Â âYou call me âTeacherâ(M) and âLord,â(N) and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14Â Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one anotherâs feet.(O) 15Â I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.(P) 16Â Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master,(Q) nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17Â Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.(R)
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
18Â âI am not referring to all of you;(S) I know those I have chosen.(T) But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture:(U) âHe who shared my bread(V) has turned[a](W) against me.â[b](X)
19Â âI am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe(Y) that I am who I am.(Z) 20Â Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.â(AA)
21Â After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit(AB) and testified, âVery truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.â(AC)
22Â His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23Â One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,(AD) was reclining next to him. 24Â Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, âAsk him which one he means.â
25Â Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, âLord, who is it?â(AE)
26Â Jesus answered, âIt is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.â Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,(AF) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27Â As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.(AG)
So Jesus told him, âWhat you are about to do, do quickly.â 28Â But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29Â Since Judas had charge of the money,(AH) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,(AI) or to give something to the poor.(AJ) 30Â As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.(AK)
Jesus Predicts Peterâs Denial(AL)
31Â When he was gone, Jesus said, âNow the Son of Man(AM) is glorified(AN) and God is glorified in him.(AO) 32Â If God is glorified in him,[c] God will glorify the Son in himself,(AP) and will glorify him at once.
33Â âMy children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.(AQ)
34Â âA new command(AR) I give you: Love one another.(AS) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.(AT) 35Â By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.â(AU)
36Â Simon Peter asked him, âLord, where are you going?â(AV)
Jesus replied, âWhere I am going, you cannot follow now,(AW) but you will follow later.â(AX)
37Â Peter asked, âLord, why canât I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.â
38Â Then Jesus answered, âWill you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!(AY)
