^23 (A)One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table ^(B)at Jesus' side,^{[a] 24} so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus^[b] of whom he was speaking. ^25 (C)So that disciple, ^(D)leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” ²⁶ Jesus answered, ^(E)“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread ^(F)when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, ^(G)he gave it to Judas, ^(H)the son of Simon Iscariot. ²⁷ Then after he had taken the morsel, ^(I)Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, ^(J)“What you are going to do, do quickly.” ²⁸ Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. ²⁹ Some thought that, ^(K)because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need ^(L)for the feast,” or that he should ^(M)give something to the poor. ³⁰ So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. ^(N)And it was night.

The Fall

3 Now ^(A)the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You^[a] shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” ² And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, ³ but God said, ^(B)‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” ^4 (C)But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. ⁵ For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

The Temptation of Jesus

4 ^(A)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness ^(B)to be tempted by the devil. ² And after fasting ^(C)forty days and forty nights, he ^(D)was hungry. ³ And ^(E)the tempter came and said to him, “If you are ^(F)the Son of God, command ^(G)these stones to become loaves of bread.” ⁴ But he answered, ^(H)“It is written,

^5 (J)Then the devil took him to ^(K)the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple ⁶ and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

and

⁷ Jesus said to him, “Again ^(M)it is written, ^(N)‘You shall not ^(O)put the Lord your God to the test.’” ^8 (P)Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. ⁹ And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” ¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, ^(Q)Satan! For ^(R)it is written,

¹¹ Then the devil left him, and behold, ^(U)angels came and were ministering to him.
